Gears of War 4 will be a 60fps graphical showcase for the Xbox One according to the Studio Head

framerate should always be priority

dirkdady2985d ago

Any bet takers on 60 single 30 multi?

mikeslemonade2985d ago

Meh hasn't been impressive looking since Gears 1 and to lesser degree Gears 2.

esemce2985d ago

You got that backwards.

MrSec842985d ago

Halo 5 had to dip the resolution down to 1154X810 to maintain a fairly stable 60FPS (even though it wasn't locked at all times).

That game still required enemy AI to update at 30FPS and it also had some glaring texture streaming problems, with visuals that weren't much better than Halo 4's were.
Maybe the more corridor based nature of the setting, smaller enemy counts and short draw distances will allow The Coalition to push the visuals harder and get the game to 900p 60FPS, but even then I'm still very doubtful the game will look like the E3 2015 reveal.

900p 30FPS for the single player campaign seems very likely if TC wants those visuals and maybe 900p 60FPS for the multiplayer with substantial visual cuts.

thekhurg2985d ago

60fps will mean epic screen tearing.

mikeslemonade2985d ago

No not backwards. Gears 1 was the best looking game when it came out. 2nd one was top5. The next Gears games after 2 were above average graphics.

donthate2985d ago

Lot of naysayers, but man Gears of War:UE is the only remaster that was done right from top to bottom. The game is marvelous and so I expect top notch experience with Gears 4!

Ashunderfire862985d ago

#MrSec84

I agree with you about that Halo 5 so called dynamic 60fps? Now I remember seeing this problem on Dark Souls 2 where the enemies move at a lower framerate than the rest of the game. Halo 5 runs at 60fps, but the enemies from a distance, and at times close runs at 30FPS?

mark_parch2985d ago

@wallstreet37
metacritic lol

rocketpanda2985d ago

@Gru,

If it's 60fps in single player and multi at 900 then I will accept that. Higher framerates offer better and smoother gameplay over 30. Unless gamers have never gamed on anything but 30 then they wouldn't know any difference, but going from 60 to 30 anyone will notice the difference.

Kingthrash3602985d ago

If it's not locked at 60 then lock it at 30.
Devs always preach 60 frames but end up making an unbalanced game. Locked 60 with ok visuals is fine but trying to have the best of both worlds isn't gunna happen with a locked 60.
That game will.not look like it did at e3...not many do.

Crimzon2985d ago

They'll probably do what Naughty Dog is doing with Uncharted 4 and go for 1080p 30fps singleplayer and 900p 60fps for multiplayer.

Shy_2985d ago

30 campaign 60 multi is possible.. I wouldn't be surprised if it's similar to halo, solid 60 dynamic resolution

@mikeslemonade You think Gears 2 and 3 looked bad when they released ?!

Kleptic2985d ago

I'm not who you're addressing this too, but i think i get what he means...

Gears 1 was arguably the most water shed game of the last generation in terms of graphic fidelity...when that landed in 2006...that was it...nothing came close...It was the first release to really show how dated the PS2 was, and how...at the time...behind the PS3 was software wise (which had also just released, and didn't have a single title comparable visually)...

Gears 2 and gears 3 didn't look 'bad'...it was that they actually had competition...Crysis released between gears 1 and 2 and sort of rearranged things in that sense...CoD 4 too, which held its own pretty well at the time...the sequels are all no doubt better looking games, but their impact wasn't nearly as significant...

personally, i find it hard to argue against that...play gears 1 on a 360 right now...and if anyone says it 'aged well', i'd be very interested to understand how. It very much looks like a last gen launch title to me, its just funny in that when you look at the 'real' launch titles...they're impossibly awful looking...gears 2 (i never played the 3rd) is much more 'modern' looking, and seemed to have a more stable framerate for the most part...it just didn't drastically improve over the original, where as some other stand out visual games of last gen had begun heavily chipping away at UE3's weaknesses...

pivotplease2985d ago

Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 and MGS4 also had their impact on the graphical front in that small period of time where Gears 2 came out (2008/2009 era). That was a great time for graphics fiends. I haven't been that impressed (proportionally) with this gen yet. I used to stare at certain textures and water for long periods of time. Hoping 2016 brings back that unhealthy obsession.

mikeslemonade2985d ago

Finally someone Kleptic understands most of what I say. I'm tired of breaking things barney style. So I just say things and if you don't understand it then you're too much of a newb for me.

Rip-Ridah2985d ago (Edited 2985d ago )

@Kleptic
I disagree with you. During that time period of the 360, Fight Night Round 3 was the first game to truly showcase the graphical power of that console cycle.

mikeslemonade2985d ago

Fight Night Round 3 is two character models. When you talk graphics. Racing and Fighting games are automatically disqualified because they should look the best by default.

Wallstreet372985d ago

Not to take anything away from Gears and when it came out it did set a bench mark for graphics but once Killzone 2 came out that benchmark was set consistently higher by Sony and passed between Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, God of War 3 etc... So idk where the delusion comes from that that was it and it couldnt be touched. And if you dont believe me ask the pros who gave uc2, kz2, gow3, etc all those awards for graphics and proclaimed them best looking games of last gen. The fan hyperbole in this threads is insane sometimes. The likes of Digital Foundry would like to have a word with you lol

mikeslemonade2985d ago (Edited 2985d ago )

God of War 3 was never elite in graphics.

This is how I saw the graphical improvements last gen. Gears 1 to COD4 to Uncharted 2 to TLoU to GTA5(openworld handicap). God of War 3 was not better than Uncharted 2 in terms of graphics.

Only one part of God of War 3 I was even impressed with the graphics was the battle against Hades.

Pogmathoin2985d ago

When Gears came out, it blew you away. The others looked great, but did not have that impact, because everything else caught up. Much like the competition will catch up when Horizon comes out, a game they showed off way too early. These days there are very few surprises left as too much is leaked or shown off far too early.

wellard2985d ago

Gears 1 is what made me buy a 360 in the first place. I saw that puppy running at a friends house and was absolutely blown away. If MS is planning on blowing minds again with gears 4 then i best start making some space under my TV for the Xbox one.

Its nice to see current gen consoles finally starting to fire on all cylinders, i have a sneaky suspicion the next couple of years are going to be great for gamers.

BF 1943 was only running at 30fps? Damn i never knew that. Im assuming you mean the 360 version. I had some great times playing that. I wonder what the chances are of seeing a new WW2 battlefield game, Id absolutely love that.

AngelicIceDiamond2985d ago

Yep can't wait to see more at E3.

Locknuts2985d ago

Especially after playing it at 60fps in the multiplayer lately. I really don't want to go back.

mark_parch2985d ago

if they get visuals like the e3 demo at 60fps on x1 that is extremly impressive

Picnic2985d ago (Edited 2985d ago )

Framerate is priority for smooth playing, PC-like, Gears where the variety often comes from the action of various character types, as if every muscle movement should ideally be captured.

For Uncharted 4's single player though, 30fps at 1080p which they went for is understandable. Single player in Uncharted is often about a cinematic flow where moments of sharp looking beautiful set pieces / colourful environmental detail in slow sections take precedence over the player action itself against Uncharted's always generic looking enemies.

UC4 used 60fps at 900 for truly testing multiplayer where every frame can affect gameplay outcome and where graphical finesse should never slow down a game.

Jumper092985d ago

If you want 60fps in every game switch to PC...

TacticAce2985d ago

No, Content should be priority... I bet this game will be lacking content due to this.....

babadivad2984d ago

I really hope both Single Player and Multiplayer are 60fps.

I cant wait for this awesomeness!

ScorpiusX2985d ago

Wow guess people want it to fail.

DarkOcelet2985d ago (Edited 2985d ago )

I think people who disagreed misunderstood why i said that because many are just looking at the title without reading whats in the article.

“Delivering [with Ultimate Edition] the first 60fps multiplayer experience in franchise history really taught us a lot about what it means to have a 60fps culture on the team and we’re leveraging that experience for Gears of War 4.”

Rod is clearly hinting that Multiplayer will most likely be 60fps.

And then he said that..

“Like how the original Gears of War was a visual showcase for the Xbox 360, Gears of War 4 will be a graphical showcase for the Xbox One.”

So if its gonna be a graphical showcase, then the single player will most likely be 30fps.

That is why i said that comment. He only hinted that Multiplayer will be 60fps but nothing about Single player and last i remember Gears Ultimate Edition ran at 30fps in Single Player mode.

Mrveryodd2985d ago

Only the people who don't like Xbox one , fn sad if you ask me. I don't own a ps4 , but I don't rag on people who do or the ps4 , I think it's so childish how some get upset about a piece of bloody plastic

Hold_It2985d ago

@castillo

Apparently so, welcome to N4G lol. If you're not constantly making Kojima out to be the second coming of Christ or praising the PS4 with every breath, you're a heretic.

The funny thing that the diehard PS4 fanboys fail to recognize is that the Xbox One is a success. It has done better than the 360's numbers, and as long as you are an improvement over your predecessor both financially and physically which it is.

On topic, I hope that Gears 4 brings more of the foreboding atmosphere that 1 had, and have an antagonist that is as strong and intimidating as RAAM.

ScorpiusX2985d ago (Edited 2985d ago )

What's sad that if you even talk ill of the other one u lose bubbles , you would think some hold that platform like its some gift of god . Ha ha which is why I rather buy Nintendo or Xbox instead .

RedDevils2985d ago

Castillo no one care about the bubbles, all for the low self-esteem people that care about it and the disagrees lol

Dark_Crow2985d ago

Gears 4 will be awesome indeed...hope it's really really dark, like the first one.

I do hope for less yelling and needless sswearing.

@Ermac

"...the Xbox One is a success. It has done better than the 360's numbers, and as long as you are an improvement over your predecessor both financially and physically which it is."

So...you're saying that the Xbone is a success because it sold more than the 360 after 2 years although it sold less than the PS3 but the PS3 is still a failure because it sold less than the PS2? Is that it?

You know what is funnier? The xbone being held at a lower standards by its fanboys!

Same here Dark. Gears4 will be awesome. Can't wait to see what they have planned. This and Crackdown 3 may be shown at the upcoming event and one of the devs hinted a big Gears 4 showcase at the xbox/windows 10 event. I'm ready.

_-EDMIX-_2985d ago

I'm also ready for that gears 4 PC and inevitable announcement I wonder if it will support 4k?

christocolus2985d ago

@edmix

I'm not the dev so you'll probably have to ask the coalition about that 4k but if ever a PC version is announced I hope it features cross save, cross buy and crossplay and also I hope those who preorder the xbox one version get a free copy of the PC version just like QB. ( The more the merrier) Great times ahead. :) can't wait for Feb 25th. Need to see this baby running on Xbox One hardware.

DarkOcelet2985d ago

Yeah, i figure they will announce a date for the upcoming Beta which i hope is soon.

I am so stocked for this game.

T1ttyMunch3r2985d ago

“Like how the original Gears of War was a visual showcase for the Xbox 360, Gears of War 4 will be a graphical showcase for the Xbox One.”

Yeah but, this is not the original team it may have some of the original members.

This is not last gen anymore, this time there are more better engines out there that are better than ue4.

Plus this is coalitions first actual game besides the ultimate edition. Which means i doubt I'll get to 1080/60fps

And lots of developers cant achieve 1080/60 on xbox. I doubt these guys will.

I love gears but i doubt thsthe game will be 1080/60 without sacrifices like halo 5 had no split screen to achieve the res or whatever

2985d ago
spicelicka2984d ago

I personally hope for 30 fps campaign. Mainly because the graphics will look way more amazing when they don't have to optimize for 60 fps.

As much as I love 60 fps, the trade off is killing me with all console games.

DarkOcelet2984d ago

Well, why not both?

I mean, Bioshock style. Enjoy the graphical beast at 30fps the first time.

And if you want to play it, say on Insane or Hardcore Mode, you will want faster response so 60fps will be preferred.

Either way, i am getting it day 1.

spicelicka2984d ago (Edited 2984d ago )

^If that's an option it would be amazing!

Either way, if the E3 footage is anything to go by, it will look amazing. I can't understand why people were complaining about the darkness, like it's a freakin action-horror game.

I was hella impressed by that demo. It bothers me that people couldn't see how awesome it looked. The lighting, wind physics, and weather effects were top notch, and that was a year and a half before release!

YinYangGaming2985d ago

First party games seem to be able to optimize really well for the X1, can't wait to see more of Gears 4

_-EDMIX-_2985d ago

It's not necessarily because of that it's actually because the studio is owned by Microsoft the company selling the platform of course they're going to focus their game at 60 frames per second 1080 P because they're not essentially just focusing on selling a piece of software on 3 or 4 platforms.

Put it this way if a game is releasing that is very demanding and the developer wishes it to be 60 frames per second it's as simple as lowering and turning off many features to have it exactly run that.

The games that are not 60 frames per second 1080 p on multiple platforms is likely due to the developer not favoring such a resolution over demanding visuals essentially they choose 60 frames per second at the cost of those graphical features.

Any developer could very much favor 60 frames per second used a dated engine and lower affects to always maintained that but what they also create their game at a lesser graphical fidelity than their competition there's a reason why GTA 5 looks better than GTA San Andreas on 360 yet gta san andreas runs 1080p.

You'd basically be asking a developer to always create their game at a lesser on a set piece of hardware and set piece of hardware even someones very own PC will always perform at lessor graphical fidelity at high resolutions compared to lowering those resolutions in favor of other graphical effects.

Put it simply its developer dependent it actually has very little to do with optimization or anything like that as you have to consider last generation we had games that were 1080p 60 FPS

it's not that developers can not do it, its that they choose not to do it, its optional.

jb2272985d ago

Thank you...I personally prefer the current trend of sp at 30 w/ higher graphics & effects, mp at 60, but either way you slice it, you cannot have it both way. That's just simple computations...it's a trade out that has to be made on both boxes or literally any piece of hardware in existence...until a dev is magically able to make a game run @ 60 w/ all of the graphical benefits of 30, the entire argument is a moot point.

It is ultimately up the the devs on which one they'd like to sacrifice, but for my money mp is a lot more twitch gameplay dependent than sp. I've played sp games at 30 for a long time now, and I've played the same games at 60, and the added benefits in the feel of the controls don't personally weigh up to enough for me to sacrifice the immersion of cutting edge graphics. Many people may differ from that opinion, but at the end of the day, it is a choice that has to be made. Can't have your cake & eat it too in this scenario.

_-EDMIX-_2985d ago

Agreed.

many people don't like it, but they need to understand that resolution and frame is developer dependent on consoles. With the exception of the off chance of them having an option to either lock the frame or have it unlocked I personally like that infamous second son in the last of us had an option for 30 or 60.

If consumers want the option on console I think it needs to be fully understood that to run it at a higher frame they will not have the same visual fidelity that other gamers are seeing at 30 and it becomes a difficult marketing problem when you have idiots showing off the game at 60 frames with muddy textures or low quality in making it sound as if something's wrong with the game because they wanted hi framed wall also having extreme fidelity like the 30 frame version.

That's no different than going on PC in seeking 60 frames 1080p on a weak setup and then making it sound as if the game running on low is the fault of the developer and not the fault of your own for setting it at such settings.

Jumper092985d ago

Halo 5 looked awful and had a ton of sacrifices... fuck 60fps

SCW19822985d ago

Working until you're more powerful is the point. There's no sense in putting in any real effort if everything just scales to you.

shinoff2183115d ago

Exactly. I've always disliked level scaling in rpgs.

Crows90115d ago

The only real reason for these types of rpgs to include level scaling is to get you to spend more time playing.

It removed entirely the feeling of becoming more powerful

sagapo115d ago (Edited 115d ago )

@Crow: although I’m not a fan of level scaling, once you reach lvl 100, the scaling stops in the open world and you can make your nighmare dungeons as hard as you want.
Going back to low level dungeons is like cutting a knife through butter, so yes, you can feel really powerful but it’s a bit pointless for rewards.

anast115d ago

Path 2 is coming out soon, so I would worry too much about Diablo at the moment.

sagapo115d ago

Path has more depth than Diablo, not everyone likes it.
I do however, looking foward to Path2 but I enjoy D4 as well. Will probably stop playing when Path 2 is out tho.

Juancho51115d ago

Path 2 looks incredible. I only played D4 a few hours, it’s not for me, became repetitive and Grundy, i already knew what I was in for and the reviews and disappointed players proved it to me. Path 2 looks BANANAS.

anast112d ago

Path 2 is going be insane. They finally added a shapeshifter!

INMATEofARKHAM113d ago

PoE 2's closed beta is scheduled for June 7th of this year. That doesn't included an open beta or changes likely to happen from feedback (Feedback that GGG is more likely to consider than most developers) so to say it's coming out soon seems to be settling one up for disappointment.

I fully expect us to be closer to a year out than anything else.

@sagapo PoE has more depth as it's been built on for a decade. I'm not saying PoE2 won't have depth at release but it won't have PoE's depth.

It's going to be a great starter point for new people to the series.

anast112d ago

I always have a problem with games that should have been longer when lasting 8-10 hours.
Here's a question I ask all the time when ppl say that.
How many times have you replayed the story of a great game like Tlou2, GOW, Final Fantasy remake, GTA, Zelda, or any other 20 hours plus game? and usually, the answer varies between 0 and rarely 1.

So what's the point of having great 30 hours plus games if you will never replay them because of level, section, grinding dragging too long?

Lifexline448d ago (Edited 448d ago )

I agree I’m not sure how people find the time to play all these games. 20 plus hour games are great but for me 8 to 10 is the sweet spot. Those games take to long to finish specially when you have a backlog of games waiting to be played. Plus 20 plus hour games always have downtime and unnecessary side quests that can be boring too much fodder imo.

Being on your phone is one thing you can access websites like this everywhere on your phone or mobile gaming. But games you have to find the time to play them. Which is why I don’t understand why so many people want like ten games it seems In a month.

LucasRuinedChildhood448d ago (Edited 448d ago )

I think you're missing the point a bit.

A game can be 8-10 hours long and use that time really well, but it can also only start to get good far into the playthrough and leave the player feeling short-changed.

Hotline Miami is only 4-5 hours long but it's extremely well paced and time well spent. But if only got really good towards the end, I'd want it to be longer.

Stanjara448d ago

You just look at trophies and se that around 20% or less actually finish their games.

CrimsonWing69448d ago

I've replayed all those games except GTA and Breath of Wild because I can never finish them.

The Last of Us 2 i've replayed 4 times. God of War (2018) 2 times, Final Fantasy Remake 3 time (technically Intergrade twice since went on Steam and I wanted 100% achievements), and if we do want to bring in Zelda I've played Ocarina of Time probably 4 to 6 times a few times on N64, another time on 3DS, and twice on virtual console Wii and Wii U.

I am sure I'm not alone in replaying long games and honestly it's like I'm finished within a week or two and that with balancing responsibilities and a social life. Shorter games take even less time.

BrainSyphoned447d ago

Without mentioning Skyrim.. I've got two platinum trophies for Persona 5 and am playing it on game pass right now. Beat FF7R on normal twice and hard once and will play it again before the next one. Non story games- MHW I've made characters on PC/Xbox/PS with at least 600 hours on each platform. I don't care to play a mediocre games that are 8 hours long. The reason my backlog is so long isn't because that many good games are released each year it is because I replay the best ones over and over. Same deal with audio books. I've gone through book series multiple times every time a new one is coming out.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 447d ago

Disagree with Days Gone - yeah it took a while to really get going, but I appreciated it when I was done. Jumping right in at 4-5 hrs or whatever would've made the rest feel less impactful. RDR2 and Mankind Divided felt just right too, I wouldn't change them at all.

What needed less time was AC Valhalla. I was more than ready to be done with that by the time it was 2/3 over. Just too much useless stuff, and I hated the Asgard sections.
