How I learned to break a c-c-c-combo and love Killer Instinct – Reader’s Feature

GameCentral’s fighting game-themed weekend continues, as one reader insists that Killer Instinct is just as good as Street Fighter.

The spring of 2016 without a doubt holds much excitement for fighter fans. Not since the nineties, when the PlayStation’s Tekken traded blows with the Saturn’s Virtua Fighter and, later, the Dreamcast’s SoulCalibur, have platform holders used the fighting genre as cudgels in the fabled console war. It’s amusing that the recent renaissance of the genre has seen such camaraderie between platform holders, developers and publishers, with few console exclusives, plenty of back-slapping interviews and even a high profile crossover in Street Fighter X Tekken. The resurrection of one-on-one violence celebrated with a hail of niceties.

That changed when Sony won exclusivity for Street Fighter V and Phil Spencer puffed his chest out like an indignant Battletoad and said defiantly, ‘But we have Killer Instinct!’ In the next few months these two fighters will go toe-to-toe for our attention in a blaze of eSport-aspiring, cross-platform brawling, six-button fury. One thing seems certain: Killer Instinct will lose…

But (and this a huge but, the kind of which you’d usually see on the final boss in Earthworm Jim), Killer Instinct is an astonishing fighter worth anyone’s time and worthy of being spoken of in the same breath as the legendary Street Fighter series.

Agreed. This game is so much fun. Haven't enjoyed a fighting game this much in a very long time. There is so much content and stuff to do (solo and online multiplayer modes) and the netcode is spot on. The shadow brain feature is pretty cool too. Can't wait for Sn3.

Also check out the lates update from the team. Massive graphics update with a new and improved graphics engine/ lighting system to launch with sn3. sn2 and sn1 characters/stages will also benefit from this.

I've gotten up to learning how to do an Ultra Combo...with Jago.

He's pretty much the only character I've used so far other than trying Saberwulf once. I've got a ways to go yet.

Hunkaloverbear3404d ago

Get in the dojo and learn manuals and do as much as you can in there it really teaches you ALOT and helps with everything

mark_parch3404d ago

its amazing how you can put in 50+ hours with a character and still learn new combos and tactics. i absolutly love this game ive got a level 50 kan-ra and currently playing with hisako. when you get used to her counter she is a beast

One of the greatest games I've played this generation with the best net code of any game I have played before. Season 3 is getting a major graphics and colour overhaul.

What I really love is the character variety and gameplay is like no other fighter.

"one reader insists that Killer Instinct is just as good as Street Fighter"

Killer instinct is better and it's not really debatable anymore. Killer instinct season 2 is 85 on metacritic, season one doesn't exist anymore ki season 2 is the base game. Street fighter is a record low 79 for the franchise. I guess people prefer the fresh mechanics of ki compared to all other fighters out there and this isn't just about ki vs sf, ki is actually better then any fighter right now and it's amazing to be a part of it.

Goldby3404d ago

you're basing a game that has had updates for the last 8 or so months over a game that was just released. KI had a 73 when it was first released, so based on timeline, they are on course with eachother, lets see how Street Fighter is in 8 Months, approx time before Season 2 of Killer Instinct started.

yeah they were such good and fun games but they never really reached the mainstream audience. Killer Instinct was widely known and respected.

Killer instinct is great, especially on snes but it’s not the most underrated fighter.. for me it’s Power Stone. So much potential in this series

Jawsh66658d ago

Bloody Roar was a game that had a sick concept but wasn’t made the best. I’d say Killer Instinct was the opposite of that, it was well made but the roster of characters were so similar to every other fighting game in that era that it ended up feeling like more of the same. I could be wrong that’s just how I remember it at the time and I played a ton of KI on SNES because it was one of the first games I owned.

I loved this game in the arcade, my main was Jago, Ultra Combo!!! https://www.youtube.com/wat...

DivineHand12556d ago

That combo was way overkill 😂

PRIMORDUS56d ago

I know haha, I loved Jago.

Bathyj58d ago

You're kidding?
It enjoyed probably more success than it deserved.
Unlike Tobal 2

MeteorPanda57d ago

Tobal 2 was awesome. Sold really well cause art similarity to dragon ball

jjb198157d ago

I remember trying my hardest to learn that "Ultra... Ultra.... Ultra...." finish. Such a great fighting game.

Popsicle57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

I can tell you definitely got some SNES time in. The slight differences in the ports due to hardware constraints were interesting. For example, the arcade version was Ultraaaa Coooommboooooooo! versus Ultra….Ultra….Ultra on the SNES.

Though SNES overachieved as a port for as demanding as a game KI was.The arcade version was one of the first cabinets with a dedicated hard drive and the SNES version was 32 megabyte cartridge which was huge for that system at the time.

jjb198156d ago

Yeah, for sure. My local childhood arcade was always packed and it was hard to get a game in but once the SNES version came out, I was hooked. I can still feel the click of the power button.

I'll have to get this! Been a big fan of KI since the very first one.

Petebloodyonion566d ago (Edited 566d ago )

I love KI (still play the old arcade version) but feel like the Xbox version is like a big intimidating chessboard with no easy way to instruct you to play chess.
The game is so deep in terms of little things to do that it makes Smash Bros melee look like a casual experience.
Honestly, doing a combo Breaker is punish/reward by itself but hey you can add a counterbreaker.
Here's what you also need to know
Breaking Shadow-linker
Instincts
Shadow counter
Auto double,
linker, manual
ender
etc,

There isn't going to be any chance of this being played at tournaments unless it appears on all platforms like all fighting games.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH570d ago

SF5 didn’t appear on all consoles and was still played at Tournaments. I’ve seen KI tournaments recently so I don’t think your opinion is accurate.
