Why are we willing to pay more for “AAA” games than for “indie” games?

Tom from GamersFTW writes: "The definition of indie games is evolving all of the time. As it does so, the constituent line that demarcates indie games from others increasingly blurs. Resisting this resurgence, and shrugging off accusations of publisher greed and technical shortcomings, sits the AAA video game monolith. With indie games increasingly lauded by critics and the community alike, and the AAA giants constantly embroiled in high-profile controversies, a simple question comes into focus. Why are we, being the mass gaming community, still willing to pay more for AAA games than indie games?"

because of the money and work that goes into them. sure indies are fun and great games, but how many people do you know that are playing spelunky or journey every day as opposed to COD, TLoU MP, HALO, FF, drive club, gran turismo, and all the other AAA games? i honestly would rather go back and play a ps1 jrpg instead of an indie because of the sheer length, story, artwork, voice acting, mechanics, depth etc. in comparison; and for the same price or most of the time even cheaper than any indie game. i never played breath of fire III and you can bet your bank im gonna buy and play it before i buy spleunky or most other iindie games that cost more, or even a little less for that matter.

like LIMBO was cool. but i didnt pay for it and beat it in like an hour or 2 (or even less). i think it was released at 15 bucks if i can remember correctly. it was worth 3-5 dollars imo. i coulda lived without it or killed that time doing something else tbh.

Now here's the problem: Cities: Skylines vs SimCity, Cities Skylines took way less time to develop, it had way more content on launch, and it was exactly what gamers wanted in the city building genre. The game released at $30, half of the price of SimCity, when it easily could have been priced at the $60 point and sold just as well as it did.

PoSTedUP3377d ago

not quite following you, i havent played simcity in like 15-16 years. which of the two is the indie? im guessing cities skylines? in that case it seems like a kickass indie title if its cheaper and has more content.

business is business and i can only respect the companies that get ppl to buy day one DLC and microtransactions because, well: to get ppl to buy into and support such crap practice out of their own free will is some powerful a** s***, lol. i wish i had the power to get ppl to buy my nose hairs, id sell them at $5 a pop with zero guilt. same goes for indie devs that create a small game that makes them rich (im looking at you flappybird), really, the more power to them.

Well Cities:Skylines is kind of the exception and not the rule.

They outdid 90% of the games released in the past 5 years and did it with a team of 15 people.

THEY know exactly what fans of that genre want and juts how to deliver it.

Also helps that you can spend months...years with a game like this and still never get sick of it.

Games like this are fun to come back to after taking a break and always stay fun.

* Not every indie game is like that.

But also, I'd say 70% of AAA games aren't worth %60 anymore either.

You can't just have $5-15 games and $60 games.

We need $25,30,35,40,45,50 dollar games as well.

Because they are smaller releases and present themselves as such. For example, many indie games don't get a physical release.

The price we pay for games is always going to be reflective of how much goes into them (moneywise) and how popular they are. It is a shame. Saying that though I wiuld be willing to pay whatevere price for a game if I thought I was personally going to get out of it what I put in.

Because advertising works on most people!!!

DiscoKid3377d ago

This. Publishers have more promotional power. It's why Shovel Knight did well. It was an indie that had hella advertisement.

Just look at CD Project RED for proof of why we spend money. Plenty of free dlcs and continuous support over the game. Not to mention about the exceptional quality and standard of contents. But Indie games? Buy and finished. Then?

2 people downvoting you because you want to play SOS & TTCM is beyond stupid, lol.

Elda642d ago

The immature mentality & behavior of some folks here on N4G is not surprising. I pay it dust.

MEGANE642d ago

I don’t get it, this is why you can’t have a discussion in here, I get there is more PS5 fans here including my self but downvoting everything Xbox is counterproductive.

JeffGUNZ641d ago

If you never played firewatch, do yourself a favor and play it. It's not very long but it's a fantastic gaming experience.

Traecy642d ago

I'll see what TTCM is giving.

Ninver642d ago

Firewatch? It's been out since the birth of christ. Better late than never I guess.
