Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is the Only Remaster Worth Owning This Console Generation

Morgan Lewis, Managing Editor of Gamer Professionals Writes:

"When Gears of War came out in 2006 for the Xbox 360, it was the pinnacle of third-person shooters. Its unique cover system, over-the-shoulder aiming, and over-the-top action, packaged with a summer blockbuster-esque story made the game an instant classic. Nine years later, Microsoft Studios and The Coalition decided to release a remaster of the original game in the Xbox 360 trilogy. They spent 18 months developing the title and, in the words of Rob Fergusson, who was previously the Director of Development at Epic Games until 2012, took great care in re-creating the title for the Xbox One."

Would be kind of neat to see this happen to the other games in the series. I've only heard great things from the franchise. Game looked really good at E3's Microsoft presser last year, hoping it lives up to the expectations people have set.

t-hall7853414d ago (Edited 3414d ago )

Well I for one haven't set mines too high. Better graphics. New maps. And to please not stray too far from the core gameplay. Also keep at least a 2 player coop (which it looks like they're doing) and I'm good. Keep Gears Gears(minus judgement) that's all I need.

FlipSwitch3414d ago (Edited 3414d ago )

This article is obviously wrong. If there is one remaster to own this generation it's the Uncharted collection. One of the best game series ever and the gold standard of remasters according to Digital Foundry.

@T-hall.

Your opinion on Last of us remaster means nothing because you are such an obvious troll. Your comment history is nothing but calling PS4 users "ponies" and saying that Xbox games "Sh*t" on PS4 games.

Nice try with the stealth trolling in this article though

@Trekster

You clearly haven't played it and are just making assumptions. They replaced most of the textures on UCC. Again digital foundry call it the gold standard

Rayven3414d ago

@t-hall
That's really all that we should expect from a remaster. Why, you say? Because remasters honestly are not for those who already had it previously, it's for those that weren't able to play it before.

The article is way too blind to not mention this fact. I doubt anyone who played TLOU on their PS3 would buy the PS4 version unless they really want to. It's not a cash grab, it's simply providing what people want.

The only game I know that encouraged you to buy multiple versions of the game is GTA V, I liked the game but the multi-platform bonuses were really just bait for a cash grab, plus the ridiculous amount of grinding you have to do to be able to afford a nice car on GTA Online is cash grabbing too.

donthate3414d ago

In terms of package, Halo:MCC packed the most value, but in terms of quality of remaster, Gears of War:UE has it done right. Gears isn't simply a resolution upgrade, but a complete remaster from all assets, down to cinematics and even sounds. Even the controls have been modernized.

Rock solid 60fps at 1080p multiplayer on Azure dedicated server. The game is buttery smooth and awesome!

Trekster_Gamer3414d ago

Uncharted collection looks dated compared to the GOW remaster. The UCC just looks crisper in higher definition. Gears remaster remastered everything!

Would love to see GOW 2&3 get the same treatment!

t-hall7853414d ago (Edited 3414d ago )

@flip so i throw my opinion out the window because digital foundry told me to? Gears is hands down the better remaster. And to ME its a better game. As far as trolling...yeah its fun to stoke the flames a bit but i own both consoles. The war means nothing to me. I play all the good shit.

@rayven. I misread his post i thought he was talking gears 4.

@donthate thank you.

Unfortunately they said it would be too much of a comittment. I would love to see Gears 2, as I view that as the pinnacle of the series.

otherZinc3413d ago

Halo Master Chief Collection is the other one and the largest package in videogame history!

FoxyGotGame3413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

I agree....

Halo 2 Anniversary could easily have been a single game release like the excellent Gears Ultimate, but was additional to MCC, making the overall package incredible value for money.

The Last Of Us is a fantastic remaster, and Uncharted Collection is also an awesome package even without the much lauded U2 MP. 343i,The Coalition, Naughty Dog, and Bluepoint all did an exceptional job updating those games for the current generation.

players who play Ultimate Edition will have access to the Gears 4 beta. The ⏩⏩Nation⏪⏪⏪ Drake Collection is following a similar marketing strategy, although it didn’t go through the same rigorous development process that the Gears of War remaster went through, and those were three games in one, not a singular title.

Gears is my favorite Microsoft franchise and honestly this remaster was so well done. It's a shame that more care isn't put into other remasters/time and effort, instead of being a cheap cash-in. I would love Gears 2 Ultimate, but knowing how much time and effort they put into this it's just not feasible. Props to them though for doing this the right way..

miyamoto3414d ago

Still can't beat TLOU Remastered quality though.
It's the highest rated quality remaster that sold millions of PS4s during its first few months since launch.

t-hall7853414d ago

I have both games and it truly did outclass TLOU Remastered. I'm sorry but that game is just too overhyped. But besides that opinion, you can tell a lot more work was put into Gears than TLOU

Ben Dover3414d ago

"But besides that opinion, you can tell a lot more work was put into Gears than TLOU"

lol... what? Wait... what? That's definitely enough internet for me for today. Holy damn..

Immorals3414d ago

That game rated highly based on the merits of the original game, rather than the remaster. The remaster was rather basic when compared with others!

Wallstreet373414d ago

T-hall majority of us disagree and factually based off reviews alot of others do too :)

We all have opinions though.

t-hall7853414d ago (Edited 3414d ago )

Yep we all have our own opinions and we are all entitled to them. Didn't have a ps3 so i didn't play this when it initially dropped. But when i finally got my ps4 it was one of the first on my list due to the OPINIONS of editors and players alike. Meh. It was like Metal Gear Solid: Zombie Edition. I mean it was ok but nothing mind blowing.

3414d ago
BLAKHOODe3414d ago

TLOU came out not too far before the new console generation, so I think a lot of people held off on buying it for that reason. When they released the remastered edition, all those people that skipped it before bought into it.

Xb1ps43414d ago

OH bs.... After I got ultimate edition a while later I got codes to get the other gears games for free... Tlou does not come close to the amount of content you get in gears even if ppl didn't get the other free games..

I have tlof on PS3 and remastered the game is great one of my faves but is pure bs if you love both games but feel tlou comes on top for the best remastered game..

I'm ready to lose a bubble for this comment

Xb1ps43414d ago (Edited 3414d ago )

I don't get this comment at all... What did it for you? The 60fps option?

Blackhoode

That was my very thought of the situation when it was announced, why so soon? But I still got it.. And still loved it especially with the 60fps but it just doesn't come close to the gears remaster, he'll Imo it doesn't even come close to the master chief collection..

Guess I just look at games differently... I look for a great game and tons of content to go with it, not just a great game.. And again I love tlou and hope they are working on another...

3414d ago
Rayven3414d ago (Edited 3414d ago )

I liked TLOU on the PS4 but if other people say they don't like it, then it's fine with me.

But people stating their opinion as facts and dissenters as opinions are just trolling.

Don't forget to use your bubble vote people. Let's clean up n4g. Remember to use your head, not your gaming preference.

And to be clear, TLOU Remastered is not for those who already had it on their PS3, it was for those who haven't played it yet. If you bought it expecting it to look completely different with only a couple of years gap from the original, then you're not a smart consumer.

lifeistranger3414d ago

@t-hall

it was a rip off of TWD to be honest. which was just really lame. I mean I guess the story was okay but gameplay? meh.

Ben Dover3414d ago

@lifeistranger

And I guess The Walking Dead is a rip-off of Dawn of the Dead then. See what I did? Does that make the show any bad? Just because a certain game use the same setting or elements, doesn't make it a "lame rip off".

Sheez.. fanboys these days try to use any non-constructive fact to support their claims.

spicelicka3414d ago (Edited 3414d ago )

I think you're confusing the game with a remaster. TLOU is a brilliant game no doubt, you can argue it's one of the best games last gen.

BUT this is a discussion on remastering. TLOU was a simple upscale in resolution and 60 fps, also it was released just a year prior to the remaster, while Gears UE is 10 year old game remade from the ground up.

They literally remade the assets, that's what a remaster is. On top of that they remade the multiplayer, converted it to 60 fps, and have been supporting it since.

This is a difference akin to cleaning and polishing your car (TLOU) versus taking apart the frame and replacing it with a brand new modern one (Gears).

I personally think Halo MCC is the greatest remake, but Gears UE is right there under it.

parentoftheyear3414d ago

TLOU, UNCHARTED, BEYOND SOULS, HEAVY RAIN, DISHONORED, MCC. There are hella good remasters. Expecially if people missed out on those. I didnt get to play B2S or Heavy Rain. Im super excited for the double pack.

miyamoto3414d ago

The Last of Us is a simple remaster?????

In March 2014, information concerning a release of The Last of Us on PlayStation 4 was leaked.[6] This was followed by the appearance of the game, titled The Last of Us Remastered on the PlayStation Store on April 9, 2014;[7] Naughty Dog announced the game on the same day.[8] This enhanced version of the game features an increased draw distance, character models of higher resolution,[9] improved lighting and shadows, and an upgraded combat mechanic.[10] It runs a native 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second, with the option to lock the game at 30 frames per second.[11] At E3 2014, Sony announced that the game would be released on July 29, 2014.[12] Some of the downloadable content from The Last of Us is bundled with Remastered, including Left Behind and some multiplayer maps, while others require a separate purchase.[8]
I wish we had a button that was like 'Turn on PS4 Mode', but no. We expected it to be Hell, and it was Hell. ... These engineers ... optimized the game so much for the PS3's SPUs specifically. It was optimized on a binary level, but after shifting those things over [to PS4] you have to go back to the high level, make sure the systems are intact, and optimize it again.
“”
Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog creative director, Edge, May 16, 2014[13]
In Remastered, character textures were increased by a factor of four, shadows were doubled and a new lighting process was implemented. The motion blur when turning the camera, used to hide slower loading textures, was reduced, and the game's environments look "crisper".[3] In addition, new settings were introduced to allow players to customize the game's audio channels, and the loading times were reduced, due to the game streaming from the hard drive as opposed to the disc.[3] One of the biggest developmental challenges was fitting all content onto one Blu-ray Disc. The changing of the in-game textures, and the inclusion of Left Behind, were the cause for this difficulty.[11] According to lead developer Christian Gyrling, Remastered "looked broken up until a week before shipping".[14]
Development on Remastered began shortly following the release of The Last of Us in June 2013. Though initially under light development, the team began working harder on Remastered when they saw the demand for it;[9] work on the game's code did not begin until a larger team was introduced to Remastered in February 2014. As development on the original game ended, the programmers expected that the game would be ported to the PlayStation 4, but planning and preparation did not begin until The Last of Us had launched.[14] The team aimed at creating a "true" remaster, maintaining the "same core experience"[11] and not changing any large story or gameplay elements.[15] For the game's frame rate, the team was initially split, with some preferring 30 frames per second rather than 60; when the game was running at the latter, the whole team became convinced.[11] The team that worked on Remastered was significantly smaller than the team for The Last of Us; in particular, the team did not include any designers, which led to various design issues remaining from the original game. Druckmann attributed this to the fact that Remastered was developed as a recreation of the original, altering only technical and graphical aspects.[13]

Azzanation3414d ago

TLOU offered 1080 and an option for 60 frames or better shadows. Its a cheap remaster just like GoW3. Gears was improved all around the board. There is no comparison. TLOU ps3 and ps4 are basically the same game. Compare Gears 1 to Gears UE.

Dark_Crow3413d ago

Concerning @t-hall785 comment.

For everybody else he wasnt saying The Last of Us game development put forth less effort. He was speaking of the REMASTER for ps4 compared to REMASTER of Gears for xbox one.

Clearly more effort was put in improving gears then in improving the last of us which already looked great.
There is not much effort involved in resolution jump and 60fps on a much more powerful device.

Seriously, reading comprehension guys.

spicelicka3413d ago

So far have to say, Gears of war, TLOU and the nathan drake collection. Their might be a few more but cant remember. Although the nathan drake collection didn't have multiplayer, it was still an excellent remaster of the trilogy.

Dark_Crow3413d ago

Halo MCC and yes I dont care about the multiplayer. I played it for the co op campaign therefore an awesome collection.

Hoffmann3414d ago

Someone didnt play Gravity Rush: Remastered and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.

guywazeldatatt3414d ago

Actually I did and wasn't all that impressed. It's referenced in the article. Do you know what they went through to make GOW: UE? There's a reason why they aren't doing any more of them...

Hoffmann3414d ago

I doubt the developer team could even say No if Microsoft would ask/order them to do a 2nd remaster. They are ownwed by MS after all.

Borderlands Handome Collection was another good remaster btw, alone already because the giant content bundled in that package + the better frame rates were a big improvement above the lastgen console versions.

Am just saying that your headline there about gow ue as the only title worth owning this gen is a bit..err...well. Its easy to disagree there. I myself would write something like "Gears of War UE is one of the best remasters seen on this console generation"

With a headline and article topic like that you are not indirectly baiting gamers that would disagree.

Wallstreet373414d ago (Edited 3414d ago )

Regardless what they went through all those remasters mentioned are top quality and scored great. As a matter of fact lets add TLOU remastered, yeah that remaster sitting in mid 90s and is one of the highest rated exclusives this new generation :)

Not saying it isnt good but giant bomb even gave it a 40 saying graphical updates in sp werent that serious or fleshed out.

Sounds like a good remaster lets just not get ahead of ourselves with click bait titles like " the only remaster" wirth owning lol this gen.

objdadon3414d ago

Well i never was impressed with gow anyway so opinions are just that......opinions.

jb2273414d ago

So I assume you put more importance on graphics over gameplay then. Those titles cleaned up everything w/o wholesale changes (a good choice to me, when technicians clean up classic works of art, they don't add new colors entirely so as not to change the artists' original intent) & they got the fps up to a stable & smooth 60 fps whereas Gears opted for 30 in their campaign and even that had some significant frame drops.

There's a reason why most of the reviews for Gears:UE said that it felt dated, because The Coalition only worked to make it prettier graphically & not superior in the gameplay department.

Playing Gravity Rush Remastered now and wow, it is almost impossible to guess it was a vita game at some points. Very well done

nitus103413d ago (Edited 3413d ago )

Considering the Vita has a screen resolution of 960x544 pixels or "quarter HD" the transition to 1080p is impressive.

I have not played Gravity Rush yet although what may turn me off is it's supposed to be fairly short. I do have three huge RPG's to get through first so I will most likely keep an eye out for it in April/May.

BossBattle3414d ago

I did play The Last Of US for PS4 and wasn't impressed like with the PS3. It didn't seem as captivating and that made me realize that there was little action in that game. I'm actually tired of remasters and think that this gen has become too dependent on them along with indies to fill in for their weak games lineup.

Hoffmann3414d ago

Yeah, I agree. Am more a fan of real remakes of games that were released like 15 or 20 years ago and a remake can add stuff to these games that were just not possible at the time.

AMD CEO Shares Vision Behind Xbox Partnership and Next-Gen Chip Roadmap

AMD CEO Lisa Su talks about the Xbox AMD partnership, next-gen Ryzen + Radeon chips, and AI rendering tech coming to all Xbox devices.

AMD is really building hype around their unique partnership with Microsoft to help and build an advanced and seamless Xbox ecosystem across all Xbox consoles and devices.

I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimized chips" though? Seems ambitious.

Next year´s Xbox Showcase already looks promising and exciting. Here´s hoping they deliver.

VenomUK16h ago

Obscure_Observer said “I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimised chips" though? Seems ambitious.” To me, I interpret this to mean rather than having a couple of X/S products for launch and a handheld there is a longer term plan to release new products with higher specs at timed intervals. I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec.

Agent756h ago

But Microsoft forgot the games.

It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever.

Correct.

"It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever."

I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released.

Notellin6h ago

You should have just lead this comment with the fact that you have zero understanding of technology in the consoles and instead have a Toms Hardware online forum level of education.

Some odd, deliberate wording, no branding, not 'Xbox consoles, Xbox handhelds' specifically, feels and sounds like they're building towards hardware that anyone can be used or licensed to/by themselves and other manufacturers.

Multiplatform software and hardware 'Xbox/AMD APU'.

The marketing and rumors seem to be heavy out of no where. The rumor was a 27 release but it maybe it could be 26 new console launch instead.

Eonjay11h ago

There PR is alrways super heavy handed. No one is acutally buying an Xbox as is.
Also it is very early to be talking so much about a next gen console.

Obscure_Observer6h ago

There´s a lot of people interested on Xbox Next and its ability to run games from major stores like Steam.

We know that the PS6 is just around the corner as well, but so far, no news on what it might improve over the PS5 or PS5 Pro.

However, Sony already made public that their priority and actual focus is the PS6. So its not "very early" to talk about next gen when the very console manufactures are talking about it.

VenomUK18d ago

If Microsoft introduces adverts into its other games I hope it can do them without disrupting the immersion of the game world. So for example in the new Fable game it would look out of place if there was a billboard advertising Cadillacs.

A far better way to do it would be to have a wizard conjure a 'dream cloud' in front of your character and then in the cloud you can see the Cadillac car and see the text with price and availability and hear a booming sales voice promoting the car. That would work so well as it wouldn't be a billboard and completely, 100%, fit in with your character's adventuring in Albion. Doesn't that sound so much better?!

crazyCoconuts18d ago

@venom, or how about our of 100 farts in Albion, 1 of them has a Cadillac pop out

Is there really a market for handhelds next to mobile?

Vits21d ago

If they run the same games as the main home console, then yeah, sure.
But if they need specially tailored games just for them? Probably not, unless there isn't a home console for comparison (see Switch).

RaidenBlack21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

I am kinda low-key happy this happened.
Dont want another Series S situation (games to be designed from 4 to 12TF scale and not 10 to 12TF).
Hope PS follows suit as well. Tablet SKU sharing with console for 10th gen, will just continue the cross gen -esque development/design phase/nature.
Want a proper 20+ only TF rasterized next-gen plz (+ frame-gen and the lot).
If anybody wants to continue the cross-gen, the Series S|X, PS5 will remain for that. And Switch 2, if you gotta go even lower in the TF range.

ABizzel121d ago

Yes and No. All of the PC handhelds combined have struggled to sell 7 million units, which would be a flop for any “console”. So the market is extremely niche because of price and target market (the informed hardcore gamer / casuals aren’t picking these up).

These handheld PCs are $500 or more, and offer at best Xbox Series S performance levels, so it’s best for MS specifically to just partner with ASUS, instead of investing millions if not billions.

Sony can make their own with custom AMD hardware due to their partnership, and stronger global brand for hardware. But even then it brings the question, of being a lower resolution PS5, and what does that mean for PS6 cross-gen (likely another generation where the first 3 - 4 years are just upgraded last-gen games).

Kosic21d ago

Imagine a Wii U style console, where the tablet doesn't rely on the console it's self, you download the game on the console under the TV and play in 4k glory, then you can remote play, get some unique game features if using both console and handheld in tandem. Then you can download the games in 720-1080p to play on the go, continue your progress, and continue on the TV when you get back.

Sony could get away with this due to exclusives, and that would be a reason for sales. Look at the portal.

I can picture seeing new hardware having some sort of GPU dock, where the handheld runs 1080p, and the dock has additional hardware to bring in 4k/60 specs.

I do think handheld gaming is going to be a strong future, imagine Nintendo release a new upgraded GPU dock for the Switch 3, every 2 years. More frames, sharper graphics on the same game for an extra £150 for a dock with a built in GPU chip. Console cycles doesn't have to be renewed, just the hardware can be improved by them reselling docks to us again and again with small/yearly upgrades like mobile phones.

GamerRN20d ago

Did you just imply that Sony can make a better stronger handheld than Microsoft? You do realize we are talking about Microsoft, the tech giant, right? If Microsoft can't make one that's cost effective, Sony definitely can't...

Brand and market share means nothing when you are a trillion dollar company

ABizzel120d ago

@GamerRN

It has nothing to do with what company can do it, or what company can spend.

For anyone taking a basic business class there is a term called ROI, and Xbox home consoles are selling at an all time low, meaning their ROI on a handheld is a risk that doesn’t make sense, even if they can afford it. Businesses are there to make money and it doesn’t make sene for MS to invest in a handheld that’s a companion device when their current home consoles they’ve spent 20 years working on are at an all time-low, when they can invest with little risk with what ASUS already has to offer.

This is why Sony can build a better device, because they have less risk involved, meaning they can invest more in their own product, and they already have an exclusive partnership with AMD on creating features and hardware. So in this specific case, YES Sony can built a better handheld, due to custom hardware, customer tools, low level APIs, compared to an off the shelf product running Windows or a Window Xbox kernel =.

I play steam deck primarily... Don't play consoles or mobile. The deck covers it all.

Funny to see the alt already damage controlling and having a meltdown with multiple accounts in the comments already.

Sad for MS if true, a dedicated handheld would go down a lot better than a rog ally 2 with an Xbox sticker on it I think.

crazyCoconuts21d ago

It couldn't have succeeded for a number of reasons. Now they've retreated to the Windows front and trying to keep that relevant for gaming. How long before Windows Central realizes there won't be a real console successor to Series X either?

Lightning7721d ago

Except there is. That project is reportedly full speed ahead.

Outside_ofthe_Box21d ago

@Lighting77

So was the handheld until today...

Lightning7721d ago

@outside obviously not since they sidelined it and they wanna see how the Asus does. Are you saying they're gonna cancel the next console?

crazyCoconuts21d ago

@lightning - I'm admittedly trying to box you in here - Do you think the next Xbox console will have Steam on it?

Outside_ofthe_Box21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

@Lightning

Here we go with having to spell everything out.

If I told you yesterday that Xbox was going to sideline the handheld console what would your response have been? Probably something along the lines of "I doubt that since Phil has been talking about it for some time now"

My point is just because they are "full speed" ahead now does not mean that will not change in future. As we have seen with the handheld. Do you understand what I'm trying to say now?

Lightning7721d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Box me in? No you said the same thing you've always been saying for years now. Those are the rumors to have Steam integration.

What about it

If you told me they were gonna cancel it tomorrow it would nothing more than fanboy talking points. I only wait for credible sources not what someone else says.

Also this is the handheld not a full blown new console. The Asus is yet to release and they're waiting to see how that thing does. Critical thinking is my strong suit you should try it some time if you can. But Ok cool well you hang your hat on that I guess. Main New console is gonna get cancelled even though the handheld is a different marketing device than the main the console itself.

I think there is a 75% chance there will not be another Xbox. There is zero reason to buy one now. No way it can possibly sell more than 10m units after Xbox went third party.

That's what they do. Goalposts shift like the wind.

I'm really confused on why they are making a "first party" device and also have a Rog Ally with their sticker on it. Make this make sense. How is their own device going to be any different?

Your console doesn't sell and they expect a handheld to?

RaidenBlack21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

The Rog Ally one is gen agnostic ... as you deciphered, it was to be the updated Rog Ally but just with Xbox branding. PC handheld with some Xbox features.
The handheld Xbox is/was supposed to be sharing the same gen/ecosystem with the next-gen (10th gen) Xbox. Think Series S but handheld ... it'll run the Xbox OS or whatever the next Xbox will run.
...
As for anybody wondering/confused why MS is doing another Xbox console ... coz mainly its the 10th gen of home consoles next, which started wayy back in 1972 for the 1st gen. And MS wanna be part in it, in the 10th anniversary gen of consoles. If they gotta bow out, they can't do that at 9th i.e just before 10th. They wanna stick around till the 10th or the X-th gen and check what the fuss happens.

Curious as to what excuses the spam was saying. Because prior to this news, the Xbox handheld was used as proof that Xbox is still committed to the hardware space. This handheld being scraped is not a good sign...

@Spam
You can replace scrapped with pushed back if you like. It's not a good sign either way.

asq3= obscured: “ What’s your source on the handheld being scrapped? “
Read the article from Microsoft own website and one of your favorite quotations site when it’s something bad about Sony.
Oh BTW good luck with your next SPAM account.
