Breaking The Execution Barrier In Fighting Games - CDM

Modern fighting games have allowed players of all skill levels to compete, tearing down the 'execution barrier' which once scared them away.

I get that fighting game companies want to make fighting games easier for all to play and I totally disagree. Fighting games were great because you had to put time and effort into each character for the win, button mashing would only get you destroyed. Now in most fighters button mashers can win and the games in general are being made at a casual level.

I grew up in a time that when you were not good at something you practiced and put the time into getting better. Now everything is made for the casual player who really doesnt care that much anyway.

Fighters have been taking steps back for a long time and they are still fun but I wish it was like the old days. Its not just fighters going casual its gaming period, what happened to the frustration of a game being extremely hard and the joy of conquering it. I cant even remember the last time I actually had trouble in a game and thats sad.

I am a gamer and always will be but developers need to remember what made gaming great and it was not making games easier just to cash in on people who only gonna play the game for 4 hours anyway.

Extremely well said!!! Another problem is that the steps developers usually take to reduce the learning curve for games only create easier exploitable tactics for advanced players who 90 percent of the market.

If you don't want to take the time to get better at something then it isn't for you.....

Gaming4Life19813411d ago

Your absolutely right and that is exactly what happened in ultimate marvel vs capcom 3.

BQ323411d ago

Nonsense comments. The idea that casuals can get wins over experienced players in any of these fighting games is ludicrous. Even if they are easier to get into and the timing for combos is less strict they are still hard to master, let alone having an understanding of all the characters tools, frame data, and match ups. There is no way a casual without full understanding of the game is going to beat an experienced technician, and even an experienced player has almost no chance of beating someone that has mastery over their character matchups and makes great reads. As long as this dynamic still exist a lower barrier of entry can only grow the fg community as well as making top tier play more exciting by being more about mind games, anticipation, and craftiness and less about superior mechanical execution.

BQ323411d ago

Quick add, I have no experience with MVC so I can't speak to that game and do prefer the games with comeback mechanics that are less influential or non existent such as virtua fighter. Though they are done well in sone games like mortal Kombat X where there is serious risk reward on when to use meter or if it should be saved.

Gaming4Life19813411d ago

ok well thats your opinion but it happens and to say other wise is non sense. Games being made easier for casual gamers is wrong and I stand by that as a gamer.

You act like a casual fighter cares about frame data etc. They only want to win and will do anything it takes, im not saying it cant be countered but these people do win not knowing or caring because the games are made for them. Call it bulshit all you want but the truth is in your face as developers have said that they make games more casual for all players to enjoy.

payikick3411d ago

Well, Then theres The King of Fighters and Guilty Gear. The level of execution is insane and yet rewarding when mastered.

That was a good read! Interesting perspective.

Killer Instinct is like the forgotten cousin at the fighting game family reunion.

yeah they were such good and fun games but they never really reached the mainstream audience. Killer Instinct was widely known and respected.

Cacabunga56d ago

Killer instinct is great, especially on snes but it’s not the most underrated fighter.. for me it’s Power Stone. So much potential in this series

Jawsh66656d ago

Bloody Roar was a game that had a sick concept but wasn’t made the best. I’d say Killer Instinct was the opposite of that, it was well made but the roster of characters were so similar to every other fighting game in that era that it ended up feeling like more of the same. I could be wrong that’s just how I remember it at the time and I played a ton of KI on SNES because it was one of the first games I owned.

PRIMORDUS56d ago

I loved this game in the arcade, my main was Jago, Ultra Combo!!! https://www.youtube.com/wat...

DivineHand12555d ago

That combo was way overkill 😂

PRIMORDUS55d ago

I know haha, I loved Jago.

Bathyj56d ago

You're kidding?
It enjoyed probably more success than it deserved.
Unlike Tobal 2

MeteorPanda56d ago

Tobal 2 was awesome. Sold really well cause art similarity to dragon ball

jjb198156d ago

I remember trying my hardest to learn that "Ultra... Ultra.... Ultra...." finish. Such a great fighting game.

Popsicle56d ago (Edited 56d ago )

I can tell you definitely got some SNES time in. The slight differences in the ports due to hardware constraints were interesting. For example, the arcade version was Ultraaaa Coooommboooooooo! versus Ultra….Ultra….Ultra on the SNES.

Though SNES overachieved as a port for as demanding as a game KI was.The arcade version was one of the first cabinets with a dedicated hard drive and the SNES version was 32 megabyte cartridge which was huge for that system at the time.

jjb198155d ago

Yeah, for sure. My local childhood arcade was always packed and it was hard to get a game in but once the SNES version came out, I was hooked. I can still feel the click of the power button.

Street Fighter 5: Analysing a Tarnished Legacy

Street Fighter 5 launched in 2016, and is widely considered a misstep for the hugely popular franchise. This article explains why that is.

Terry_B533d ago

Every Street Fighter is called a misstep of the series since Street Fighter III..and even the Alpha games were not liked by everyone.

SF V had a miserable start but later it did a lot things actually better than SFIV and SF6.

SF6 is the first SF since SFII Turbo for that I did not buy at launch. And today, around 6 months after its launch I still have no motivation to buy it.

kevco33532d ago

I've had every Street Fighter on launch since SFII on the SNES. SFV is definitely my least played of them all.

SF6 is very good. You should give it a second look.

Terry_B532d ago

Maybe in 2-3 years when there is a version that has characters I care for.

So far there is not one of the new characters I like..and my favourite 4 are not a part of it either. (Bison, Balrog, Sagat and Vega) + the whole hip hop style and the crappy music turned me totally off.

Looking forward a lot to Tekken 8.

Sano24532d ago

SF4 vanilla was loved by most and and not considered a misstep. It wasn't until they went revision crazy that people started turning on Capcom.

Terry_B532d ago

Don't remember the criticques it got for the big hands and feet, the sometimes weird looking faces, the lame boss (Seth) and that so many characters were shotos and yup..the many new versions. Just every SF got its haters no matter how good it was.

Nerdmaster531d ago

It was criticized for the first trailers having an interesting art style with those ink splashes, but the real game had none of that and people felt cheated. And Capcom decided to add some of those effects in the game later because of the backlash. But I don't remember any other big complaints about it.

EvertonFC532d ago

I grew out of fighting games, loved them as a kid but online you just get your ass kicked over and over leaving just the bare bones single player and also having no friends anymore who like fighting games either just makes me not want to buy or play them anymore.

CrimsonWing69532d ago

I dunno, I like Street Fighter 5 quite a bit. 🤷‍♂️

Shiro173531d ago

Sf6 is the best sf since sf4ae lol

Barlos565d ago

I'll have to get this! Been a big fan of KI since the very first one.

Petebloodyonion565d ago (Edited 565d ago )

I love KI (still play the old arcade version) but feel like the Xbox version is like a big intimidating chessboard with no easy way to instruct you to play chess.
The game is so deep in terms of little things to do that it makes Smash Bros melee look like a casual experience.
Honestly, doing a combo Breaker is punish/reward by itself but hey you can add a counterbreaker.
Here's what you also need to know
Breaking Shadow-linker
Instincts
Shadow counter
Auto double,
linker, manual
ender
etc,
