4 player splitscreen on shooters, racing games must be a norm since forever. Don't know why developers abandon this feature in most modern games. Also slitscreen coop is always an amazing experience with a partner, family, friend etc.
I don't think it will ever die as long as people have friends and family, but online multiplayer is definitely more convenient.
Forza, Halo, Gears and Fable have another thing in common besides being part of the core MS games, they all feature local multiplayer.
local multiplayer has not gone anywhere, it is just the split screen that is no longer viable for technical reasons that has screwed local multiplayer for shooters and racers but the Fifa's and Tekken have never stopped being played locally
