Prey for the Gods Interview – The Story of No Matter Studios & New Details on the Game

OnlySP: You may have already heard that this was a Q&A interview and not another full fledged feature interview. While we love to do feature interviews, sometimes developers just don’t have the time for those long Skype calls with us, aren’t fluent in English or are just shy. So, throughout the course of this year, we’ll be utilizing multiple interview formats, including long feature pieces, audio interviews and of course, the occasional Q&A interview session.

This week, we’re exploring the development of No Matter Studios and their first title, Prey for the Gods. The game made a pretty big splash a couple months ago when the first trailer dropped for the game, showcasing some very obvious inspirations from a gaming classic, Shadow of the Colossus. Prey for the Gods isn’t just another Shadow of the Colossus, however, as you’ll find out through reading this interview. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, you can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Great Interview!

Its hard to imagine that what i saw in the trailer is a three man work. I mean damn!

The game looks insanely good for such a small team. I cant wait to see more.

I'd like to see some other reviews as well. It's crazy that this is the only one I could find to submit on N4G.

Hines: We Didn't Have Much of A Choice, We Contacted The Prey for the Gods Team A Long Time Ago

Bethesda's Pete Hines said that the Prey for the Gods team was contacted a long time ago, even before their Kickstarter campaign, about the trademark issue but they strangely decided to bring it up just as Arkane's Prey launched.

He also said Bethesda didn't have a choice or it would have risked losing the trademark, and they had to change name many times for their own games due to the same regulations.

I get that trademark law is in dire need of some updates, and ZeniMax would struggle to defend it's trademark if it didn't go after Prey for the God's but seriously!? It's so stupid. And I bet Bethesda won't get nearly as much flak as King for its little 'Saga' affair a few years ago

odderz2546d ago

Hmm, almost feels like games should avoid using single words for their title, it always contributes to some sort of mild controversy.

-Foxtrot2546d ago

Why didn't they just change their games name then

Alexious2546d ago

Good question. For once, most of the blame might actually be on the indie developer as they probably decided to make this public exactly when Prey had the most media attention, which is on launch day.

FullmetalRoyale2546d ago

Knowing Fox a bit, I feel confident in saying that he meant "Why didn't Bethesda call this game something other than Prey?"
I know this, because he and a lot of people felt the story of the last Prey game was left unfinished. Coupled with the fact that Bethesda said the devs could make what they wanted, but it had to be called Prey.

morganfell2545d ago

Somebody was cashing in on the Prey name alright - Bethesda.

bluefox7552545d ago

Agreed. It's not like it has anything to do with the original game anyway.

Alexious2545d ago

Maybe so. But it's better than the original Prey, that is for sure.

--Onilink--2545d ago

Because they are the ones that own the trademark? And the ones that bought the rights for the IP(even if they ignored the previous game)..

Isnt that more than enough reason?

rainslacker2545d ago

Or just let it go because a word used in a sentence for a title in no way dilutes the trademark of a game with a single word title. This is because most people actually can read, and Prey is a word that is descriptive and meaningful, and single words should not be allowed to be trademarked beyond their actual IP, so that the word can not be used in any way anywhere else.

Curious how this will play out

--Onilink--2545d ago

They already settled on a solution. This was more of an explanation about how trademark law doesnt really gives them any other choice but to fight otherwise they risk losing the trademark
