The Witness Review | IGN

The Witness has a power and pull that carried me throughout the more than 40 hours it took to complete it for the first time, and that, even now, beckons me back to confront the mysteries I left unsolved. Its graceful combination of tangible goals, obscurity, and freedom creates ample opportunity for small victories and grand revelations alike. For the most part, its themes weave themselves beautifully throughout the gorgeous world and wide variety of puzzles, but even when it breaks subtlety in favor of a more heavy-handed approach to exposition, it never detracts from the truly fulfilling moments The Witness offers in terms of solving its physical puzzles and unlocking its deepest mysteries.

Sounds like a winner. Will definitely be picking this up tomorrow.

Question is do I buy it for PC or PS4..

never4get1524d ago

The Game Engine Looks Great, Unreal 4, Cryengine, Unity 5 should take note.

mikeslemonade1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

Looking forward to playing but I hope people don't jump the gun and call it game of the year. It irritates me that people think Her Story is game of the year. Like are you stupid!?

Gonna play Witness on the PC using the Xbox Elite Controller :)

Highlife1524d ago

What type of monitor, what type of chair are you going to sit on. Point is no one cares where or how you play this game.

Utalkin2me1524d ago

I have some ocean front property in Kentucky i wanna sell you. How about it?

Kingthrash3601524d ago

Whoa, was expecting a 7....a 10? Color me more interested.

Kingthrash3601524d ago

Why mention the xbox controller?
I mean sure play it with the xbox controller but mentioning it just seems petty in this article.
It's not needed unless you want to troll.
For instance
Saying "I'm gunna play tombraider on pc with my ps4 controller." On a review article of tombraider reviewed on xbox.
May as well say "imma go take a duce, with tissue" we know you gunna use tissue bro.....or are you?????????

ElVeneno1523d ago

That sounded a lot better in your head didn't it? All the other engines you mentioned are far more sophisticated and versatile than this one.

DARKKENT1523d ago

Great start to the year for ps4

Getting this

SonyWarrior1523d ago (Edited 1523d ago )

not going to lie i got bored just watching this review i can only imagine the game... Plus the way this review was written makes it seem heavily bias as if she is almost promoting the game probably a fan of Blow from his other game 10/10 is just garbage and any one with iq over 75 would know that

UltraNova1523d ago

Interesting and expertly designed game, but 40+ hours of puzzle solving? Does the game come with free paracetamol tabs?

The stealth-trolling force is very weak with you young one...

kraenk121523d ago

If you go on talking about IQ and stuff you should make sure you at least get your punktuation and grammar right.

Depends what kind of PC you have.

Neonridr1524d ago

a super zippy one..

just built a brand new one a few weeks ago.

But would there be any differences between the two versions?

OoglyBoogly1524d ago

"But would there be any differences between the two versions?"

Unless you're playing on a PC with a 1080p monitor, limiting yourself to 30FPS, and using a controller instead of mouse and keyboard why would you even ask a silly question?

Neonridr1524d ago

@OoglyBoogly - (great name by the way)

Is the PS4 version limited to 30fps?

frostypants1524d ago

@OoglyBoogly: "Unless you're playing on a PC with a 1080p monitor"

You mean like 95% of people?

Qrphe1524d ago

More like a third of people

uth111524d ago

@Qrph -
He's correct

If you dig into that hardware survey, you'll find the majority of PCs have a 1080p monitor or lower.
1080p was the most popular
1366x768 was 2nd most popular.

only 3.38% of users have > 1080p monitors.

Nivekki1523d ago (Edited 1523d ago )

Well not everyone takes part in the Steam survey so it's not 100% right of the whole userbase. But if you want to take those stats as proof then lets use them.

Steam has over 125 million users, as of Febuary last year -

So 3% of those users, according to the stats you yourself have used, equals 3.75 million people with displays with a higher res than 1080p.

3% might sound small, but that's a large amount of people really.

MasterCornholio1524d ago

I don't believe a game like this will have issues running on the PS4.

But if you have a powerful PC just get that version.

Si-Fly1524d ago

I had the same choice to make, but as I have a CV1 on order it was an easy one to make when they announced they won't be supporting PSVR ;)

Neonridr1524d ago

this will have Rift support?

Bladesfist1523d ago (Edited 1523d ago )

@Neondir yes they said they will support the rift but not PSVR. Not sure why people are disagreeing with Si-Fly.

WowSoChill1524d ago

More artistic crappy indie games, less hardcore games, this is not for me

of course IGN overrates it to hell, a 10 dont mean anything when they give COD a 9 every year

MRMagoo1231523d ago

Some pretty bitter xbone guys in here huh.....just get it on pc if it matters that much. It's a good game don't miss out cos of your childish bias.

Qrphe1523d ago

This game is pretty hardcore from what the reviews say so get your disagrees son.

KwietStorm1523d ago

Wowsochill look at me I'm so cool. I'm going against the grain!

slappy5081523d ago

This game must not have a lot water

Hoffmann1523d ago

Worst comment I read since dayxs on N4g.

PS4 for comfy couch gaming and surround sound.

SniperControl1523d ago

My gaming PC sits next to my PS4 with-in my entertainment centre in my lounge, the PC is attached to my 7.1 surround amp, which then goes to my 65" 4K TV, i use a DS4 controller to play my PC games while sitting on my really comfortable sofa.

What's your point?

cell9891523d ago

@Sniper do you really have to brag, not everyone has your setup. He clearly said HE was going to play this game on his PS4 and home theater setup. Am I to assume every gamer out there has the ability to connect their PC on a hometheater system? what was your point?

reallyNow1523d ago

sometimes i leave my dick at home because its just too big to take into town.

Bladesfist1523d ago

@cell989 TBH it is a dumb argument. There is no reason why you can't do the same on the other system so why list it as a plus for one system when comparing which one to get it on. Comments like that only mislead people.

SniperControl1523d ago

Not bragging my friend, just trying to prove a point, not all PC gaming requires you to sit hunched on a uncomfortable desk chair at a desk and play on a tiny monitor, to which nilla was loosely insinuating to.

Muzikguy1524d ago

Oh man, it's still January and I'm falling behind already! I've been waiting years to play this game. This one and Resident Evil 0. Playing Drago Age right now and I had no idea how long even they game was going to be. I have a feeling I'm going to be buying a lot of games this year

showtimefolks1523d ago

what a way to start the year for ps4.

showtimefolks1523d ago

did she just say 40-50 hours to finish and she has spent over 80? damn

i thought this was a indie title

glad i am wrong. i rather be wrong to play amazing game than be right to play another generic title

KwietStorm1523d ago

Christ almighty what is with the indie buzzword? What does play time have to do with what studio made a game? It is made by an independent studio. Gasp.. But it's good? And has lenghty gameplay? How is this possible? It's like it's never been done before...

showtimefolks1523d ago

i didn't mean it in any negative way. and don't blame the gamers. Indie games are usually not known for their game length

i was just surprised when she said 40-50 hours

magiciandude1523d ago (Edited 1523d ago )

Game looks great, but IMO it will end up on PS+ on sale/free in a few months. $40 just way too much for a game like this for me.

ziggurcat1523d ago

$40 is too much for at least 40-50 hours worth of gameplay, and at least 600 puzzles? yeah, no...

Jmanzare1523d ago

The game doesn't look to graphically demanding I would expect it to run 1080p 60 fps on ps4

G20WLY1523d ago

It does, as confirmed by Eurogamer.

Jmanzare1523d ago

Lol it looks like a high res GameCube game as confirmed by me

I cant wait anymore to play this !!!!!!

locodoco1524d ago

I agree, good to know what has already been confirmed for Xbox One.

Letthewookiewin1524d ago

No it's not. It got rated in case Blow feels like bringing it over. Google it.

sactownlawyer9161524d ago

From the article: "Blow has already clarified that there are currently “no plans” to bring the game to Xbox One release. He explained to Polygon that the game’s publisher, Thekla Inc., submitted the game for an Xbox One rating as a precaution in case they decide to release the game on Xbox One at a later date."

DashArrivals1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

YEEESSSS. I can't wait to get this ASAP for my PS4. I've been waiting for what seems like forever.

fitfox1524d ago

is this game like myst?

Septic1524d ago

Sounds like it from the review. Will deffo have to check it out

MoveTheGlow1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

It really sounds like some of the core things I enjoyed about Myst are here. It doesn't throw you any hints, there's a mixture of puzzles and exploration, and it teaches you how to do things without words.

What's different is that the puzzles in The Witness seem to be unified in this really, really fleshed-out maze mechanic, while Myst had very different puzzles, but usually just one of each. I liked that about Myst - the different puzzles really figured into the island itself and the atmosphere, but apparently they just do that differently here.

Nilla_Nate1524d ago

A little bit but the focus is on line puzzles. The environment is "Myst like." BTW I LOVE Myst!

KwietStorm1523d ago

He said Myst was just one of the influences in game design. It's not "like Myst."

Good start of the year for my PS4!!

FamilyGuy1524d ago

2016 is looking so good so fast
I'm glad all his (Jonathan Blow) hard work is being appreciated, seems like he's been working pretty hard on this game.

generic-user-name1523d ago

January - Witness
Feb - SFV
March - Heavy Rain/Alienation
April - Uncharted 4

PS4, killing it in 2016 so far.

travestyj1523d ago

Ratchet & Clank and Gravity Rush Remaster as well. Oh and MLB The Show.

DonkeyDoner1523d ago

weak feb for you
there's neptunia, Gravity rush remaster, digimon cyber sluts

DarXyde1523d ago

Let's not forget about the other titles just because they're multiplatform, mate.

Particularly, Dark Souls III. Still a part of the PS4 library so still very worth picking up.

Omegasyde1523d ago

wtf cybersluts is releasing? Where do i throw my wallet at for that game?

MRMagoo1231523d ago

I'm intrigued by the Digimon game please tell more lol day 1
