I want to get into these games but I have no idea where to start. There seems to be a lot of them.

I actually started the series relatively recently myself. The easiest way to start them would probably be with the Re;Birth series, as those are basically remakes of the first three games, but with a more refined combat system and more general content. You can get the Re;Birth titles either on Vita or on Steam, and usually find them for about $10-$15 each. You could still play the original versions on PS3, but I think the Re;Birth titles added enough to really make that version very worth playing.

And just for a quick point of reference, there wasn't any Hyper Dimension Neptunia 4, 5, or 6, so if you just play the three Re;Birth games, then you should be well aware and caught up with the story and universe. It's very light-hearted, filled with comedic references and nods toward many of the different games, developers, and publishers out there. Gameplay feels pretty good, baring in mind that it is a turn-based JRPG. There's definitely some challenging fights you'll find from time to time. So I'd say that I've had a lot of fun with these, and it's worth giving at least the first one a try.

Similar to the Atelier titles, I was initially put off from trying them based on the videos I had watched, but I've come to find out that many of the videos don't really do the games justice for their overall contents. That was my experience though.

Great reply.
I've always been put off by them having so many entries and I always got the feeling the games had no real purpose other than fan service.
But I like JRpgs and like light hearted storys so I may give these a go.

I'll second that. Recently started on Re;Birth myself. They're definitely good if you want something light, and want to grind some. It's something I play between games, or as a break when Witcher fatigue was killing me.
