Law Against “Sexist” Video Games Rejected in France; Proponent Blasts Quantic Dream’s Kara and More

A few days ago, DualShockers reported about the attempt to pass a law amendment at the French Assemblée Nationale to penalize the production of video games considered “sexist,” and showcasing a “degrading representation against women.”

During the discussion at the French parliament, proponents blasted Quantic Dreams' Kara, Dishonored, Assassin's Creed Unity and the Imagine series of games, but was shut down with Life is Strange and Beyond: Two Souls brought as examples.

I wonder how much more effective these legislative bodies would be if they were allowed to cast out their reactionary extremeist who take on these issues on moral ground instead of approaching them with facts and sound reasoning. The debate after the introduction can bring up moral issues, but IMO, the actual proposal should present nothing but verifiable facts, which are then combed over by committee, and if some legislator wastes everyone's time, they should get a flogging or something.

I'm sure it would clear up a lot of the wasted time, and maybe allow legislators to get some work done in the time between their campaigning which seems to take precedent over serving the people who elected them.

The method of delivery of ruining another persons life is inconsequential to the actual wrong being done. It's either libel, slander, or harassment....or some combination thereof.

Arrest I'm not sure would be considered false arrest, but it could be false imprisonment. The two things are actually different. It may be a bit different in Canada though. I know in some states in the US, these kinds of things are about on the same level as domestic disputes, and all one needs to get arrested is have a complaint filed against them. In some cases for harassment though, the police can make a judgement call based on the situation, but more often than not, they call the DA or the attorneys which work for the police.

There are grounds for a lawsuit for harassment, and I would actually like to see how one plays out, because it could set some pretty important precedence on matters such as this, thus making it harder for companies to simply avoid the controversy because somehow, it's assumed that an employees personal views are the companies views...which is completely moronic outside the board members, the owners, or the major shareholders.

I've been to France, albeit 20 years ago, and nudity and sexuality was (and most likely still just as is) fairly open. All beaches were/are at least optional topless. TV commercials during the World Cup tournaments had topless women. Late night shows had all sorts of fun stuff on them... and so on...

The thing is, these games are nothing to what the people of France and the rest of Europe see and hold culturally viable. Prude Americans are the ones who freak out about nudity and sexuality. My mother (whom is one of those prude Americans) freaked out about a simple partially-nude statue at a park in Japan. I told her "Wow! You'd better not go to Europe!!!"

Basically what I'm saying is that I don't understand any Western country tying to ban this game... And America can't because of our freedoms.

Alright. Let's assume that the characters of DOA are actually real, or at least representative of women in some way...the latter being fairly reasonable to assume.

Does their sex appeal and presentation take away from who they are, or make them less of a woman? Are they not strong characters, particularly female characters, despite their sex appeal and presentation?

If they are still strong confident women, it's not objectification. However, it is sexist for others to feel they are less of a woman because they feel that those women are less due to characteristics which do not wholly make up who they are.

I won't deny that some people may not see past the sex appeal of it all, but that isn't the games problem, that's more a personal issue, and does not make the game inherently sexist, discriminatory, nor guilty of objectification.

It's a paradox of people who have used the terms wrong for way too long, and their minds have become so clouded with their own BS that they can't even see beyond something like clothing or breast size. I'd find it rather funny to be honest, if these people weren't so damn pretentious about it and trying to interject their misconceptions about sexuality into my life, and if their own egos didn't need to be propped up because they seem to think they need to protect all women, instead of worrying about those that actually need help.

Good for you. Devs make their games they way they want them to, because they can.

Other people take no offense, or don't see the rampant sexism being talked about coming from certain games, yet you want other people to be restricted from the content because you deem it inappropriate. To me, a lot of the criticism lobbed at games on topics such as this falls into the category of confirmation bias(look it up). There are certainly real examples of it, but none of it is harmful to the degree that the SJW crowd makes it out to be.

You want what you want, yet want to deny others what they want.

Now lets assume you get what you want. Great for you right? Yes, that is all this nonsense is good for, is driving ad revenue to websites. The discussion before Anita stuck her head into it all was much more civil and productive and actually had real devs engaging with the audiences. Gamasutra had at least 2-3 articles a month about this kind of stuff...now they've completely ruined everything that was great about that site for a dev by taking a side instead of allowing industry professionals to blog, then discuss.

Sexist isn't even the right term though. To be sexist, media content has to believe(or in this case represent) that one gender is superior/inferior to another. If that belief causes one to act, or in the case of a game delivers that message as the main thing to take away from it, then it's discrimination borne from sexism. However, just using those themes to craft a story, regardless of if the characters overcome those themes oppressing them, is not sexist or discriminatory in itself.

Sexism = belief.
Discrimination = act.

Objectifying is a term which seems to be left out in many of these conversations, and to me, that's what this bill was supposed to address. Objectification is neither sexist nor discriminatory, it's just a representation of an object(person or inanimate).

Objectifying = turning something into an object that is something other than what it is.

In the case of objectification, the argument kind of falls apart on the literal, because obviously, an objectified woman is still a woman. However in context, it's more about that women are turned into objects for someone else's gain, which is generally thought of as making someone less than human.

There is no issue with the portrayal of males in video games. I'd like to know exactly how characters being "gun loving psychos" or having big muscles is sexist? Because it really seems like you're grasping for straws there.

If this game existed on its own I don't think many would be complaining, however, when games upon games upon games feature a bunch of women half naked (or in street fighter V's case almost completely), hyper sexualized, or consistently below the male characters that's when its a problem.

I do wish that for once people who've actually played or invested time into being a gamer or generally enjoying videogames would speak out in these kind of situations.

Politicians; just like most gaming media outlet journalist, don't have a clue what they're talking about. When you are speaking in representation of a certain collective I thought it was necessary to know the material you are referring to.

Sexism in video games is such a bs dynamic and as evident as that is to damn near every person who has invested in gaming as a hobby for years, you still can't find people dedicated to fending off the negative stigma these people try to create to force their narrative and gain some kind of representative.

I remember late 90's early 2000's Adam Sessler was one of those people who would essentially speak up for Gamers in actual televised debates about the violence in video games etc. People who where considered credible, before anyone on the Internet that could form a proper sentence with a click bait header would've been considered a Video Game Journalist.

Bottom Line is, Women do everything Men do in video games and then some actually. The perspective of how particular characters are ultimately going to be perceived has a lot to do with the creative for said character and game as well as what the fanbase thinks of the characters. I doubt Donald will be the next president. Even the GOP wants to distance themselves from him. If he made it past the primaries, much of what he said would be inspected on the legalities of actually being able to do what he claims should be done, and when that time comes, he'll be trounced. He's also pissed off pretty much everyone except old white people and the overzealous bigots. He panders to reactionary emotion with inane and stupid quotes which don't hold up under scrutiny.

The media loves him because he's entertaining, but the voters aren't going to be cozying up to him come the elections. The only reason he's really doing well now is because of the pandering, and the fact that many of the other candidates don't get enough time in the press due to Trumps sensationalist ways which drive more hits to websites and television, thus making him more noticeable.

In the actual presidential election, despite the seeming hate for Hillary, she's going to trounce all over him, and I think many people in the Republican party realize this, because she just has the good favor of some pretty significant voting groups which Trump has outwardly belittled, such as women and Hispanics. All trump has to do now to seal his defeat is piss off what remains of the middle class, and he likely stands no chance with the lower class voters as it is.

That being said, I don't think the country as a whole is on this reactionary bandwagon that we've seen of late. The media perpetuates it, but I've only met maybe 1 in 20 people in the last 10 years who actually buys into this stuff. Most seem to know that it's all stupid political posturing, and most are sick of it and would prefer to have a government that can get stuff done, instead of paying these idiots to bicker about stuff for their own party lines.

In other words no you cannot infringe on the rights of those who enjoy these games. You need look no further than the thousands of women who cosplay as their favorite scantily clad super heroine or video game character.
