More of the Same Thing is Good

You see it all the time. Great games that are expertly designed in every fashion. From the crafty level design to a compelling storyline. From detailed graphics to a terrific battle system. We have access to original IP's and sequels that best their predecessors at our fingertips. So why is that the media is stuck on innovation as a major component of a video game? All too often if a video game isn't innovative enough in a sequel it is given a score that is far below what it's original was given. This seems to happen in all genres.

If it aint broke don't fix it.
I don't mind getting more of the Same.
It's the main reason why you liked the first one in the first place.

Ratchet and Clank series for this principle in action at its best.

Going on 7 games in the same series, made every one or two years, with more or less the same enjoyable gameplay, only slight tweaks, by the same game developer without people being fed up of the series.

That's quite an achievement.

I usually expect innovation thruogh New IPS, not sequels. Thats why I expect LBP or Spore to innovate greatly but Resistance 2 or Gears of War 2 to have its same great gameplay with new weapons, better graphics, and tweaks to the old system.

While more of the same is's not fantastic. If The Dark Knight had been Batman Begins 2...we would've have seen that GLORIOUS Joker interpretation by Heath Ledger! If Peter Jackson had just made another zombie flick after Dead Alive, we wouldn't have The Lord of the Rings...some of the most emotional and epic movies ever made!

Then again, JK Rowling wrote the same crap for years...and they all still love her.

You got something to say about Harry Potter!? im 20 now but i can honestly say that was one of the best series of books i ever read when i was younger! and it wasnt the same it was a series.. 7 years 7 books.. by ur logic the lord of the rings was just the same crap for years too

Placing the authors of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings in the same catagory is just plain silly. Rowling might be good but in no way is she in the same league as Tolkien.
