2016 is All About Open World Games

2016 will be the year for open world games, offering Mesolithic mayhem, pandemic riddled wastelands, and plenty more.

Similar to 2014 and 2015 :>

It's really getting kind of ... monotonous.

better than linear games any day of the week..

Nah, I believe a well fleshed out linear game is going to be better than an open world with checklist chores you need to tick off. Both approaches if done right are great, and both can be just as tedious if done wrong.

There should be some balance between the two imo, lately we've been getting too much open worlds.

The main benefit to open world games is you can leave the story and go create your own fun in the environment. Games like GTA are a good example of that, it took me over 3 years to finish the GTA 4 story because I was always doing my own thing in the game world. With linear games it's the same exact thing over and over every time you play it, the replay value is next to zero unless there are some alternate endings.

Why jump from one extreme to another? It was bad a few years ago when all we had was corridor shooter after corridor shooter, and now it's starting to get a bit bad when all we're getting now, apparently, is massive open world after massive open world...

Variety is the spice of life. I don't want to jump from an 90-hour RPG to another. Putting shorter and more focused experiences in between, and completely different genres of games, makes it all more interesting.

This is why I'm going to jump into something like The Order 1886 right after I finish Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Not a chance of it. A good game is a good game, whether it's linear or open. Thing is a lot of open world games just open with nothing. Barren landscapes and repetitive quests over and over again with very little life in the world. There are some amazing open world games though like witcher 3 and skyrim for my own examples and gta 5 as your example. Linear games can have terrible storeys and repetitive gameplay that drags on longer than it should have but on the flip side there are linear games with hugely engaging gameplay and kick ass characters and storey. One isn't better than the other by default just because it's linear or open. Like I said, a good game is a good game.

@psychotica
Linear or open world is not the point. A good game is a good game. Are you going to tell me that Uncharted 2 (goty) or The Last of Us (another goty) are inferior because they are linear? Millions obviously disagree. Myself, I prefer a great story and I don't mind linear gameplay at all. What I do mind is boring or uninspired gameplay, and that can occur whether a game is linear or open world.

I loved the Mass Effect series, ditto for Bioshock and many other similar titles that are linear. I also appreciate a great open world game, and am looking forward to games like Horizon Zero Dawn or Red Dead 2 as much as anybody.

Next time you watch a developer interview, I dare you to count how much times he or she says open-world.............and epic.

Use it as a drinking game all the time.

2016 is all about . . games.

let's not make it a thing to hate on what's popular, like we always do.

"oh look, there are too many open world games".

There's a lot of diversity out there, instead focusing on whatever you're told to play... make your own decisions.

Uncharted is a 2016 game, it isn't open world. QB, Persona SF and so forth.

They've got more resources to work with now so devs are able to realize their vision. If they want to make bigger worlds, let them. . . It's their art. You don't have to appreciate it. Someone else will.................
