Nintendo Needs a Better Solution to amiibo-Locked Content

Twinfinite: "A lot of people were annoyed when Splatoon locked 60 single-played missions behind the game’s amiibo (20 missions per figure), because it meant they were missing out not only on extra gameplay, but weapons, outfits, and mini-games that were exclusive only to the amiibo missions. Similarly, when you tap the Link amiibo in Hyrule Warriors you unlock the amiibo-exclusive Spinner weapon. Fans of the game who didn’t want to dish out $13 for a toy they didn’t want were upset in the same way."

- Search for a friend with Amiibo.
- Use it to unlock.
- ?????
- Profit.

Of course many people still think that paying directly for it without asking if a friend have a toy is better.

PD: A lot of companies these days use DLC, in Nintendo's case usually is optional. You wont die for not having a weapon (plus, in Splatoon the weapons were replicas of normal weapons). And still, the DLC still costs money. I mean, I can pay $13 for a weapon / character in other games, or I can pay $13 for a weapon / character and get a figure to put on my desk.

Same s*it, different package.

The point is whenever someone else does it everyone flips out, but when Nintendo does it they seem to get a pass. ;)

mamotte3448d ago

Who else? Please, enlight me.

wonderfulmonkeyman3448d ago

Other way around there, buddy.
Everyone seems to let stuff like Disney Infinite and Skylanders slide, but amiibo are somehow the devil of DLC.
You'd know that if you paid any sort of attention.

hellothere19773447d ago

then again, what else do you expect from an entitled generation of idiots? why do i say this?

these are the same people that will readily hand over $10 for a code for individual dlc, maps for instance, of a specific game. that's all they get...a code FOR ONE SPECIFIC DLC ON ONE GAME. nothing else.

Nintendo offers DLC for their game thru a collectible item, without a further charge. yes, in a sense, they are "paying" for DLC in some sense, but they fail to realize they get a decent physical toy collectible to show for it. what these idiots also fail to realize is that, this amiibo toy they purchased for $10-13, it works to UNLOCK DLC ACROSS MANY DIFFERENT GAMES (usually) ONCE YOU HAVE IT.

these whiners should try telling activision this concept. sad thing is, in the chance hell freezes over and activision agrees to give future dlc away free across differing games once ONE SINGLE PURCHASE IS MADE, these morons will hold activision up in such high regards for being a "developer for the GAMERZ!"

If I could get away with selling toys to idiots so they could unlock a shirt on their game I'd do it.

KimikoGaming3448d ago

I'd rather pay $13 ($10 with GCU) for in-game content that isn't locked to one online profile and be able to share it with friends as well as a cool figure than paying $10-13 for just DLC that is locked to one profile/system.

Get_A_Job_Foxtrot3448d ago

How about neither? Comparing one bad thing to another bad thing, doesn't justify a lame practice.

KimikoGaming3448d ago

At this point, DLC will never be removed from the industry. Wanting it to disappear is just a dead dream.

So why not get a cool figure as well?

hellothere19773447d ago

as oppose to your belief that you should have these things...FOR FREE?

hellothere19773447d ago

sadly, people are too stupid to realize this basic concept of goods and value.

Kyosuke_Sanada3448d ago

Maybe make them memory cards. People already will buy them for rarity alone.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3448d ago

Don't blame Nintendo. Blame the consumer for heavily supporting it.
The only Amiibos I have in the house are Mario, Link, Samus and Marth. Also Peach which my little sister own and Mario and Link are mines and my older brother has Samus and Marth.

So anyone who supported the Splatoon amiibo are at fault.

Hmmm interesting. Hopefully true, liking the slowly but surely partnership between the big 3. Just imagine all the xenoblade games officially on pc. I think mcsft going 3rd party but still making consoles fits them.

Xenoblade chronicles X is not there

Either removed or the picture shown was edited, but it is currently not there

NettosGameRoom23d ago

You can still view it using the internet archive!

TheColbertinator23d ago

This is good. Real good if Nintendo is smart to capitalize.

I would bet a lot of money it’s not happening

$40 is absolutely ridiculous. $15 made sense, but you can literally get full on games for $40… what in the hell is going on?

PapaBop67d ago

$40? wtf that is insane. I got a few sometime ago and those things should be more like $15 tops for the quality of them. Nintendo going to Nintendo though, people will still pay $40 and scalpers will charge double that and idiots will still pay.

Reason number 1 why I haven’t played yet:
Cannot commit the time. :/

GotGame81868d ago

The nice thing about X is you have a Follow Ball. If you haven't played for a few days it will help you jump right back in! Fantastic game! You should at least have 5 initial hours over 2 days or so to invest. I also suggest grinding to at least level 14 before chapter 3.

Zeldafan6467d ago

It's nice that definitive edition makes level grinding easier. Quite a bit quicker than the original release.

PRIMORDUS67d ago

I bought it thinking it was like the trilogy and expansion on Switch. I played it for 15 or so hours and stopped. Couldn't get into it, the gameplay was not like the previous ones, it was not what I expected.😕

Dhika67d ago

I bought it on the Wii U years ago and couldn’t get into it too 🙁

PRIMORDUS67d ago

I feel ya, sucks cause I wanted to like it, I tried.

Greatest RPG ever except end game makes it impossible to complete for anyone who focused on mech battles. Do not focus on mechs or you will be disappointed
