In a recent episode of Double Fine’s “Devs Play” series, Ted Price, President and CEO of Insomniac Games, sat down with Tim Schafer, founder of Double Fine, to play and discuss some development titbits from the original Ratchet and Clank, including influences from the Japanese Yakuza.

Good to know that Ratchet don't have a problem with Yakuza.

Owenza3403d ago

Ratchet may have five, but Clank only has three! He must be seriously mobbed up. :P

Insomniac Collectively Decided to "Double Down on Story-Driven Character Action Games"

Insomniac's Ted Price talks about the ballooning game development costs, and how it was a studio decision to focus on single-player games.

Cacabunga49d ago (Edited 49d ago )

Wise decision, but give up a little on spiderman please as well

darkwalker49d ago

In other words, Sony forced them lol.

isarai49d ago

Literally only ever made sp games even when they left sony 🙄😒

-Foxtrot48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

Not really. These days it would be more believable if you found out Sony tried to force them do generic live service slop

isarai48d ago

Which they did and cancelled it, thank goodness 😆

Inverno49d ago

I'll be that guy. Their writing needs work cause the story in both Spiderman games were pretty bad. I'm all for more SP games, I prefer em, but man is writing in games in general just gawd awful.

Extermin8or3_49d ago

First spidermans writing was fine, second hand some points where it could have been better and based on the leaks due to the hack alot of content for cut for whatever reason. Had it managed to stick to the story that was originally written without the sometimes frankly weird changes that were made - it would have been much better written.

Inverno49d ago

I thought the first game was too crowded and the characters that should've gotten more attention didn't get enough due to having a rushed Sinister 6 inclusion. But hey thnx for the reply rather than just hitting the disagree.

-Foxtrot48d ago

"enough due to having a rushed Sinister 6 inclusion"

It wouldn't be so bad if they continued this development in background of Spiderman 2 so when Spiderman 3 comes you had the Green Goblin and the Sinister Six as the end goal.

Oh but no...they decided to have Kraven kill most of them off screen and them kill Kraven off at the end when he was part of the original Sinister Six in the comics, how dumb can you get.

Flewid63848d ago

This isn't even the consensus on these games.

-Foxtrot48d ago (Edited 48d ago )

Depends on what game

First Spiderman had a great story

Miles Morales was alright changing the Tinkerer, giving them a brand new origin as Miles old friend to give him a villain over creating his own original villain (which he REALLY needs, even in the comics) was pretty silly. Some of her decisions, writing wise, in the game just made no sense where her sacrifice in the end didn't feel earned.

Spiderman 2...I'll give you that one. They tried to include far too many things story wise and they just couldn't spin that many plates. Harry's return, friction with MJ, Miles, Miles friends and Family, Hailey, Venom, the Symbiote war, Kraven and his Last Hunt. It just felt all over the place and Peter didn't to really shine like he did in the first game.

Extermin8or3_47d ago

Second game was subject to loads of cuts which is why the story feels off I think. https://youtu.be/VEONGKG1gL...

Travesty49d ago

Where are the days where we could have both a really good story and a really fun multiplayer without sacrificing one of the two.. It doesn’t have to be a live service title to be multiplayer. I understand there’s a lot of work that goes into keeping up with it, but still.

Inverno49d ago

Those days were left on the PS360 era. I spent too much time during my depressed teenage years playing and sucking at Uncharted 2. I know people really enjoyed the Gears MP too, and Halo doesn't need to even be explained. Some games did it right, too many tacked it on, and F2P ruined it all.

isarai49d ago

I think the main problem is that everyone overthinks the multiplayer. It doesn't have to be some Grand live service game with season passes and a giant open world map with a Battle Royale mode.

Insomniac "Most Stressful Period" Was When They Moved Away From Working With Sony, Claims Founder

Ted Price, soon-to-be-retired CEO and founder of Insomniac Games talks about the most stressful time he had at the studio.

LG_Fox_Brazil82d ago

Working with EA must have been quite an 'experience' I imagine

Cacabunga82d ago

The game Overstrike/Fuse was way below average. The best thing they made was Sunset Overdrive which only got attention for being xbox exclusive. I never played it and I’d they port it to PS i would def try it.

I want Insomniac to go back to Ratchet ad Resistance

darthv7282d ago

I keep hoping that Ms will loosen up the reigns on SSOD. It really deserves more attention. It sucks it was not one of the FPS boost titles as it really is a different game when running in 60fps. I cant play it on my XB anymore after playing it on my steam deck in higher frame mode. If Sony and Ms put aside their differences and brokered a deal... this is one I feel would do extremely well on PS.

Master of Unlocking82d ago

IKR. Why we still haven't had a Resistance HD Collection and a Ratchet & Clank HD Collection for the PS4 & PS5 is beyond me.

Profchaos81d ago (Edited 81d ago )

Sunset overdrive was a really fantastic game but the Xbox crowd just didn't get behind it as it sold abysmally.

It's on PC at least making it a bit more accessible.

I recall buying a cheap x1 during a retail firesale for halo 5/MCC as a way to play the Xbox exclusive games before gamepass and the only first party game that impressed me that gen was sunset it's like Spyro, Tony hawk and a third person shooter had a baby it's pure insomniac allowed to go nuts.

I actually think some of Spider-Man to an extent owes the lessons learnt by insomniac on sunset

I hope we do see a port with Microsofts strategy now I'm sure it's possible

darthv7282d ago

I can see where he's coming from. After working with someone for so long, building up a report and all... going out and having to work with others they had no experience with can be stressful. They made it through, and did a few different games in the process. One of which was a partial inspiration for how they would approach Spider-Man later on. And it's one that doesn't get enough recognition for how balls to the wall fun it is.

goken82d ago

That’s one way to look at it.

Another would be after working with MS. they not only returned to work with sony, they even decided to join them.

Dandizzle82d ago (Edited 82d ago )

if you have ever wrestled with a xboxdev kit you might understand why

darthv7282d ago

Hmm.... working with EA and working with MS. one is a bit more flexible than the other. i'll let you decide on which is which because one let them make a game THEY (IG) wanted to make and the other was a game they were tasked with making.

Christopher82d ago

***if you have ever wrestled with a xboxdev kit you might understand why ***

New WWE character, exclusive to Xbox, the XboxDevKit.

calactyte82d ago

"if you have ever wrestled with a xboxdev kit you might understand why" I felt that in my bones also having developed on an Xbox Devkit.

EA really killed their best idea. They went from a snazzy looking coop shooter to another gritty slopfest like Fracture or Brink.

gold_drake82d ago

yeh i can see that.
its definitely the good relationship they had together

Ted is one of the most underrated studio heads ever. Insomniac games has been one of the best and most welcoming studios in the industry. Best of luck Ted you were great running this studio

Michiel1989101d ago

yep, never any drama from the guy or from the studio and all their games are received extremely well.

Christopher101d ago

One of the best places to work as voted by industry professionals as well. Obviously that starts at the top.

Knushwood Butt101d ago

Unfortunately that seems to be getting rarer these days.

-Foxtrot101d ago

Yeah I was going to say he's kind of ran a tight ship since he started out in the job.

Kind of shame we never got someone like Ted running PlayStation Studios over Herman.

neutralgamer1992101d ago

He deserved it way more. Insomniac at 256 million is the best acquisition ever in gaming. Just look at what they have released since being acquired compared to other Playstation studios or even 3rd parties

OlderGamer17100d ago

I blame mostley Jim Ryan for running to the life online multiplayer
Pipedream games. Thank God he is gone...

Eonjay101d ago

Three decades is plenty enough. Congrats and enjoy your retirement! Have fun, write a book, travel and see the world... or do nothing at all! You earned it!

DefenderOfDoom2101d ago

Thanks Ted Price . I first enjoyed, very much playing DISRUPTOR on PlayStation in 1996.

ReignMan_27101d ago

My cousin and I used to take turns playing levels in Disruptor. One of our favorite games back in the day. Good times!

DefenderOfDoom2101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

Another good memory about Disruptor for me is , it was the very first game I played on my brand new 27inch color TV
I had previously played PlayStation DOOM and Hexxen on a 19inch Zenith. color TV from the early 80s that my mom gave me .. I remember how amazing it looked to play on 27inch TV back then! CRT TVs looked so good for gaming back then .
Yes indeed ,good times !

Becuzisaid101d ago

That game was freaking awesome and highly underrated. That level half way through where you had to outrun the bomb timer though.....
