NZGamer:
This may seem an odd statement to make, but in a lot of ways, Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. feels like Nintendo’s answer to Dark Souls. Sure, on the surface, they couldn’t be more different: one’s a dark fantasy action RPG with minimal dialogue, subtle black humour, and a story told almost entirely environmentally; the other’s a bright, colourful turn-based JRPG with plenty of exposition and off-the-wall, goofy laughs.
Peel back those superficial layers, though, and you’ll find some surprising similarities. Both are games that, despite having typical RPG stats and levelling systems, are more dependant on your skill as a player than the strength of your character(s). Both are games that have reading and reacting to enemies’ movements as the cornerstone of their combat systems. Both are games that are brutally, almost impossibly hard at first pass, but with practice, trial, and error, those seemingly insurmountable obstacles become a breeze, and then it’s on to the next challenge.
NE: "Today, we look at the entire Mario & Luigi series and determine how each of its games compare to each other."
The Mario & Luigi series has been dormant since the Nintendo 3DS, but the success of the Switch is the perfect opportunity to bring it back.
