Palmer Luckey: 'I handled the messaging poorly' on Oculus Rift's Price

you can't handle 599 any better. IMO that's a lot of money

it's almost twice as much as the consoles

DarkOcelet3463d ago (Edited 3463d ago )

Add to that, you will need at least a 1000$ PC just to be able to run the device.

The price is ridiculous.

Godmars2903463d ago

Think it was all the references to $300-$400 range.

porkChop3463d ago

Because that's what they originally claimed it would cost. And when asked about that price range last year, he said they would have to go over it by "a little bit." $200 is not a little bit.

Agheil3463d ago

So "it's going be 599 U.S. Dollars".... Flashback anyone?

Godmars2903463d ago

But the PS3 wasn't an accessory. Certainly not that further required an upwards to $1000 investment for a PC rig.

donthate3463d ago

What is damning as hell in this article is that Palmer actually states they are not making money on the headset itself!

So they are selling it essentially at cost + overhead i.e. it is the cheapest it can be without subsidizing it.

That means PS VR is going to be closer to $500 range, and HTC Vive will need to be at $600 (or more) even with cheaper manufacturing due to extra controllers in the box and HTC needs a profit!

Hot dang, I think the year of VR maybe in 2017-2018. No wonder MS jumped ship on VR until next generation.

End of 2016:

We are proud to announce that 0.00001% of Steam users now own Oculus Rift.

BassMan1253463d ago

I bet that 0.00001% are Twitch streamers or YouTubers.

They will have fired close to 20,000 people all up after this round of lay-offs coming, since the ABK deal announcement in January 2022. Shocking really

January 2023:
Microsoft laid off 10,000 employees, which was a significant workforce reduction.

January 2024:
Approximately 1,900 gaming employees were laid off following the Activision Blizzard acquisition.

May 2025:
Microsoft announced a further 6,000 layoffs as part of an organizational shift.

June 2025:
Additional layoffs, including 650 in the gaming business, focused on corporate and support functions

It's not that shocking considering these numbers aren't just Xbox numbers as you're deliberately trying to make it seem for some reason.

Interestingly, another no shocking fact is that whenever Microsoft releases its quarterly earnings reports, you're quick to point out that those numbers aren't exclusive to Xbox. Yeah... go figure.

They also fired around 2500 people across Microsoft's gaming divisions and Zenimax shortly after buying it, and before they closed down 4 studios including Arkane and Tango.

I remember Satya boasting about how compassionate he was for splitting the list 50/50 across the two companies.

Could be not as bad could be horrible. But it's Ms so I'm expecting the absolute worst.

Sometimes I feel like they brought in Sarah to take the heat away from Phil.

Phil has always stuck his nose into everything Xbox related when it's something positive or at least neutral but as soon as they went the multiplatform root he's stood back and let Sarah do most of the talking in terms of PR. Now they are doing the same with layoffs.

The person who should be let go is Phil himself.
