Sony’s CES 2016 Trailer Has PS4, Uncharted 4, Horizon, PlayStation VR, but Price is Still a Secret

During Sony’s CES 2016 Conference, the house of PlayStation and Bravia aired a new trailer from the brand, and it certainly included lot of PlayStation to crown CEO Kaz Hirai’s dedicated speech.

I was more excited at the fact that we saw updated footage of Uncharted, The Last Guardian, Horizon and PSVR software!

The last Guardian looked slot more vibrant and apparently running at 60fps!

And man Horizon ZD looked fantastic.

I'm not quite sure about VR, but I'm happy to know that if I take the plunge I already have 2/3rds of the requirements...

I'm hoping they simply have a sku with just the PSVR HMD without the PS Move Peripherals because I have those already! :) which would make cost of entry to VR experience cheaper for those who have a PS4 and a set of Move and Nav controllers

Sony is gonna put off announcing the price as long as they possibly can

edit @ below: If PS VR is coming out this summer or after, yeah maybe they'll announce it at E3, that would give them the biggest audience possible, alot of people watch E3.

I think Sony is just waiting for Oculus Rift price to be announced. Regardless of who announces first, I think all of them will try to stay competitively close to one anothers price range.

The question that's likely to arise is who will and, who is willing to accrue the biggest lose financially to get their tech on the market!?

To be prercise, it's coming out in the first half of 2016, which means before June 30th.

Unless they delay it, E3 is too late.

If they planned to keep it a secret until then, while communicating it only to the retail chain (something that needs to be done months before a release), you could bet your shoes that it'd leak.

They want people to pre-order it. They aren't going to wait for E3 for a price.

Their last chance to announce a price is GDC in March, unless they do a special event just for PSVR.

If there's no reveal at GDC, I'm pretty much 100% sure we'll get price at E3 or pre-E3 and No Man's Sky confirmed as a launch title for PSVR in June.

Definitely b/c it's coming soon. They took a huge loss on the PS3 and actually made a little on the PS4. It's price sold it like hotcakes and now they sit in a comfortable position. The Move set them back so this has to be done right.

It may be worth taking a slight loss at first to get this in everyone's hands. Nothing beats natural person to person recomendation.

My only worry is this really b/c the price will hopefully be reasonable. Software. The Kinnect and Move failed b/c either the software just wasn't what ppl wanted to play or the games that used it, ppl preferred a controller.

Ppl will LOVE playing in a VR world, so the software cant be simple games that get boring really fast.

Pretty sure it will be $399+ based on what we've seen from Oculus and HTC. That probably explains why they haven't announced the price.

As was pointed out above, Sony is holding off on the announced price point because OculusRift which has more exposure for it than the HTC: Vive.

I would put that being the main reason to wait until after OculusRift gets its pricing so as than to set itself as a no doubt cheaper alternative. Being able to come in at a lower price point is or would be a advantages in the first stake bid for consumer spending on higher costing HMD headset space over the mobile VR HMD entry point stake that's going on right now in the mobile VR headset space..unless your google with its Google cardboard that is..lmao

Its pretty clear a reason to hold off until after its seen main competition I mean all OculusRift headsets come with what controller bundled with the headset outside of its motion controller?

It I'd would say is reason enough why Sony is holding out as long as they can.

Oh indeed, from a business standpoint it makes complete sense for Sony to make their competition go first. Still, I wish I knew the price of all these upcoming headsets right now in order to plan my upcoming expenses accordingly :P.

From what I understand, won't oculus require a fairly beastly PC to run? PSVR could afford to be a bit more expensive than Oculus actually, because the barrier for entry being just a PS4 console that can be grabbed on sale for around 250-300 come release of the unit would still be significantly cheaper than whatever minimum spec PC would run the unit.

I don't really know why they are holding the price back at this point, but if they were the first VR manufacturers to put their units in kiosks across the world, they'd most likely guarantee themselves a better shot at being top dog in the VR space solely by being the first quality solution to release. Not sure how Gear VR or Google Cardboard turned out, but it seems like Vive, PSVR & Rift the the strongest contenders. Also heard that HTC had made some breakthrough in their VR tech the other day & it sounded like they'd reveal that at CES...any word on what that was?

The fact if you look at the media coverage about VR, all three headsets

HTC Vive
Oculus Rift
Playstation VR

Are the front runners for the more expensive VR HMD option's

Microsoft's smart in effect they are getting into VR, but without a very high risk. For instance. The controller bundled with such units keeps the consumer tied to Microsoft's game pad when playing VR games with 1st bid to use their physical controller. That means less Logitech sold game pads or other 3rd party control game pads needed.

Keeping the consumer locked in or keeping that incentive to keep using that game pad keeps gaming more associated to keep the gamer with Microsoft than moving to other optional controller's for PC..from an OS to a game pad in PC this is a means to an end for Microsoft's drive to keep the consumer tied to a Microsoft gaming eco system. The fact that its PC and it Xbox or in this case the Oculus Rift. The Rift was made for A Microsoft Windows OS with a Microsoft windows based game control pad with tied to PC and or Xbox platform.

Sony is no doubt not treating these lightly over such as a main reasons to make sure that with all their own investment into VR that as a company they want the best chance for their product to successfully launch with a better chance for consumer adoption.

Being able to under cut the price indexing and or price point barrier, as much as $25.00 to even $50.00 maybe even $75.00 to $100.00 lower to give the company a better chance to release to consumer price point close to break even point index I would no doubt think is a very big priority.

Sony is not just facing Facebook in this market for its product for VR but also Microsoft also in an indirect way. Yes the Xbox VR kit is not what they are in competition with. But since every Oculus Rift bundle's with a game pad made by Microsoft made for a windows OS powered consumer game system be that PC or Xbox Sony is not going to treat Oculus Rift as just a Facebook only device, its just as much of a Microsoft device being marketing for a Microsoft platform just as much as Sony is Marketing PlayStation VR as a playstation 4 platform.

Well it is the CES, so it's really not about games at this show. Back when there was no E3, the games were being show at the CES in Las Vegas. The very first dedicate E3 show was actually in Chicago, but at the time it wasn't called E3. I know because I attended it. It was opened to the public. When it moved to L.A. it was called the E3 and eventually public weren't allowed in any longer. Lot of history. I've been to about 10 E3 shows and 5 CES. Don't expect much on the PS4 or it's games at the CES.

That I do not agree with, for several reasons.

No Sony cannot afford the PlayStation VR to be more expensive than the Oculus Rift or really in close to the same ballpark. Sony wants the price to be not just lower, but also far and away as further away in price entry point as they can just to give them even a fighting chance to successfully get consumer adoption.

This is much more of not just a larger financial risk for Sony than it is for Facebook & Microsoft.

Over VR both Facebook & Microsoft are targeted this HMD to PC market known to Be a large market but when it comes to product failure in a market for the #1 operating system that is used for PC's what is a failure index for adoption for such peripherals? For PC's?

In the current market which media firms are going to track such sales of this device?

But in effect how much of a products failure in the market for a peripheral would effect the stock of Facebook and or Microsoft vs what the effects to Sony's stock if Playstation VR does not take off?

There is no doubt what that answer really boils down too. Sony is not taking this lightly to the direct competition of two very cash coffer rich company's that have Billion's in profits vs how the media and financial firms & rating companies would react to the PlayStation VR not being able to take off in the market.

So.no.I doubt very much Sony is looking to see charging more for their VR headset as what Facebook & Microsoft's ability of what they will be charging for OculusRift in the market.

HD-DVD had no chance to succeed, simply based on 22 manufacturer companies choose blu-ray in 2002 vs Toshiba & NEC decided to stick with HD-DVD evolution, but was no where near ready but Blu-ray was on the cusp in 2002 to release in consumer form in 2003..and it did! Where HD-DVD did not release until 2006! And did not have even a consumer recording function yet even than.

The only reason HD-DVD vs Blu-ray was even a thing , was because of iHD software control method vs BD-java.

Blu-ray consortium chose java over iHD software.

Yea, the fact Sony investment into blue spectrum diode's way back into 1997.

Sony had the very first blu-Ray consumer video recording player released in the Asian market back in Apr 2003! That's three years before the PS3

The blu-ray disc's were in protected carts to keep them from getting scratched. In that effect TDK made the scratch protective coating because the data was burned close to the bottom surface of the disc, not under metal coating like in DVD's.

Because in 2002 the consortium was deciding on the physical format to be the next evolution to SD video standard in disc based medium for recording..

Toshiba & Nec wanted HD-DVD
22 other optical disc drive manufacturing companies chose blu-ray standard.

While

Microsoft with its iHD software
Vs
Java

Sony has been investment into blu-ray since 1997 and they were not going to sit by and let that investment go to waste.

Sony even before Oculus Rift & playstation VR, Sony was already making HMD headset's.

Sony built the playstation Move worked on the concept since 2000 when they hired on Dr. Richard marks back in 1999 into playstation. Back in 2001 showing off how a playstation motion control device would work in controlled user methods in a virtual environment with At augmented reality on a screen tracking a users hand held objects with the eyetoy on a playstation 2 to allowing the tracking a area of space with depth tracking from handheld devices. VR was just the next step forward & evolution what Dr. Marks started @ playstation so many years ago with the playstation 2

Does Microsoft have any affiliation w/ Oculus beyond the controller connection? I wasn't aware of any financial involvement on their end where they'd profit off of the actual unit sales...Either way I definitely agree that Sony will want to push it at a lower price point, especially after seeing the $600 point for the Oculus announced today, but looking at their solution for VR/PC bundles starting at $1500, I just think that PSVR could match the Oculus at $600 & still come in at a substantially cheaper point, under a grand.

Like you said, Sony has a lot riding on VR so they'd want to make it as accessible as possible right out of the gate, but for the sheer fact that their console is still significantly cheaper than a qualified PC, it will naturally be a much cheaper alternative for the Oculus even if they matched their price at launch. Either way I'm curious now what MS' involvement in Oculus is, I had only heard about their AR HoloLens solution and that the Oculus would be paired w/ MS controllers...how could Oculus' success or failure help or hurt MS stock?

Very very impressed with all of Sony tech , including 4k camera , HDR TV , high def music devices , most of all , the turn table lossless,anolougue/digital player...must have for musos , the v.r will I guarantee be mind blowing , complete with surround HD sound in vr set , ppl gonna be pooping pants at experience...
