Inside Digital Foundry: Teach yourself pixel-counting

DF:
720p, 792p, 900p - video games often operate at significantly lower native resolutions than the 1080p output of the console may suggest. We've discussed at length our opinions on how much this actually matters to the gameplay experience (generally speaking, 900p isn't as much of a visual comedown as the raw maths suggest) but in this piece, we'll be going into depth on how we actually make the calculations - and how you can produce your own analyses.

"900p isn't as much of a visual comedown as the raw numbers suggest"

I've been saying this for a while

You see, they have to go all through that to tell because just looking at the game on the tv they have no idea like I've been saying forever. So there you go, all you people who can tell the difference between 900 & 1080 should get a job at Eurogamer because you are obviously better qualified than them....

I'm not a pixel counter. I've never held it as a mark of gaming greatness. But I do have to say you can tell between 900p & 1080p, especially when the native resolution of the monitor/TV is 1080p. I've messed with those resolutions a lot on my PC (especially when I had a weaker card and tried different combos to get the best performance). It's not gamebreaking. It isn't immersion-breaking. But it is noticeable.

I totally agree on PC, if the native resolution isn't the same as the monitor especially as your setting the resolution yourself & going back & forth testing yeah, but if I set a game up on your PC, one that you've never played & asked you what resolution it was running, I'm sure you'd have no idea exactly & that's my point really.. You don't need to do all that DF are doing on a PC because like you say you put in the resolution, but when the game is upscaled or not upscaled it needs all that testing to tell what resolution it is..

Teach yourself to enjoy gaming less by becoming a pixel nazi. No thank you.

Better off learning to enjoy a game rather then wasting your time with this..

You need to freeze a frame and pick it apart side by side to tell the difference.. Something that nobody should bother doing, unless you make your living off exactly that like these guys

Nobody bought it for an obvious reason.

Wtf did this edition come with ? A real helicopter and a real zombie virus ?

Vithar125d ago

For one lucky person willing to spend $386,000, the My Apocalypse Edition of Dying Light promised a staggering collection. It included the buyer’s face in the game, a human-sized ‘Volatile’ statue, and parkour lessons with a freerunning team. It also came with night vision goggles, an all-expenses paid round trip to Techland’s offices, and four signed copies of the game. Oh, and it also came with a custom-built, ‘zombie-proof’ survival shelter.

LOL but it was a stunt from the team:
‘It was a PR stunt and got a lot of media attention for its wild and over-the-top nature, it was designed to generate buzz around the game’s release. It did a great job of getting the game noticed, though! But nobody purchased it – thankfully, I guess!’

I finally beat DL2 this past weekend. I’ll pick up the Beast for sure.

It got a lot of shit from fans more not being as scary at night on release. I was in that boat. But once I gave it a fair shot I really loved it. The movement was so much more expressive to me. I enjoyed the story too.... for the most part. Was my game of the year when it came out. With all the updates for darker nights and all that, it's even better. I feel almost exactly the same about stalker 2 right now. The erojank games are scratching my itch.

Actually for me , Black Ops 3 has one of the best Call of Duty campaigns I ever played. Not the original campaign. The Zombies campaign that unlocked after beating the original campaign. So much more fun running from zombies rather than the peek a boo hide behind a rock play style. .
