1UP: Boogie SuperStar First-Look Preview

Come October, EA is hoping to make good on last year's promising, but ultimately panned, dance-and-karaoke game, Boogie, with the Wii-exclusive sequel, Boogie Superstars. With none of the previous game's variously-colored animal-like "Boogs" in sight (remember the orange, disco-suit-wearing mascot? Yeah, me too), Superstars looks to bring the human characters to the forefront. The main story mode has you choosing from about a dozen templated tween characters, customizing him or her with a unique wardrobe, and then taking your chosen one to a special song-and-dance training facility. The goal is, of course, to get good enough to participate in, and ultimately win, Boogie's version of American Idol.

GamerDad Review: Boogie: SuperStar

GamerDad writes: "Boogie: SuperStar is like two games in one. Create an avatar and customize your own look. Then send your virtual self out to compete in dance and vocal competitions. The singing portions of the game are similar to SingStar or Karaoke Revolution or the vocal parts of Rock Band. Sing along to more than 35 pop songs. You don't have to know the words, as long as you can sing in pitch, you'll pass. The game comes with an included microphone that hooks to one of the Wii's USB ports, and while it works fairly well, I didn't get too far because I can't carry a tune in a bucket with my voice.

The dancing portions of the game didn't fare much better, but I don't think it was a fault of mine. Use the motion sensing Wii remote to perform various dance moves with your arms. An on-screen diagram shows how to swing the remote, and you must do so in time with the beat. The problem here is some of the moves don't seem to register with the remote."

WorthPlaying Review - 'Boogie SuperStar'

WorthPlaying: "When EA's first Wii-centric music title came out, Boogie failed to make much of a splash with the critics, but the general audience liked it well enough. Boogie was a dance karaoke game full of style but lacking any significant substance, and it gave way to a design that was maybe a bit too in tune with its intended casual gaming audience. Dancing around your living room with a mic in hand might be fun, but without any significant challenge or spot-on movement recognition for the dancing portion of the game, the whole package fell a little short of my expectations.

Sadly, it appears that the sequel, Boogie: Superstar, still suffers from the same voice and movement recognition issues that I had with the original, and while some changes have been made, the majority of them feel pretty superficial in the long run. Combine that with a somewhat-tired formula that apes the American Idol experience and a frustrating unlocking sequence to give you access to all of the songs, and the entire game feels like it's pretty much on par with the original, and not in a good way."

Look up 'dullard' in the dictionary and you'll find a picture of David Beckham.

At least Victoria (when she was a spice girl) used to look like she had a teeny weeny bit of personality.

Panipal20055597d ago

I don't believe it. There are Victoria Beckham fangirls on N4G.

Very newsworthy

LOL @ disagree, you obviously think highly of Victoria Beckham in the world of gaming

"sheds pounds", slight exaggeration? If that were indeed the case Mrs Beckham must be dead right now.

Congratuations David, the plan worked :)
