Tomb Raider Dev: If We Gave You Action Upon Action, It Would Get Old & Redundant

In what could be a soft but sly jab to Uncharted, Tomb Raider's Creative Director explained that constant action gets old fast and that's why Rise of the Tomb Raider has a lot of variety.

yep. my goty. get this game any way you can. even if you have to wait a year. it will still be a great game if not better.

Rimeskeem3464d ago

Unpopular opinion but I thought the game was alright. It want anything truly spectacular IMO.

nbalive893464d ago (Edited 3464d ago )

@t-hall785 its also my goty can't wait for a sequel :)

3463d ago
t-hall7853463d ago

Lol rimeskeem i dont care how unpopular my opinion is. It's my opinion. Not here to be popular but to each his own. Id like someone to tell me if I'm missing out on a great game. Whether i think it is or not.

Monster_Tard3463d ago

@t-hall

"Lol rimeskeem i dont care how unpopular my opinion is."

I'm pretty sure he was referring to his own opinion.

DARKKENT3463d ago

If it was jab I'd say...

The devs at ND can do action upon action because not only do they have the ideas... They have the TALENT to execute it perfectly..

Uncharted is the pinnacle of action gaming.. Why else have crystal dynamics now copied the uncharted formula?

Let's be real look at the tomb raiders before uncharted and now since uncharted.. Let's be real

Utalkin2me3463d ago

@t-hall785

You're in such defense mode, you're totally misunderstanding what someone is even saying.
He was referring to his opinion.

The_BlackHeart__3463d ago

Tomb Raider is easily a top 5 of 2015. But it doesn't top the big hitters of the year, either commercially or critically. The Witcher 3, BloodBorne, Metal Gear V, FallOut 4 and then Tomb Raider.

Bansai3463d ago

I can see where they're coming from, constant action after a while wouldn't just be as impressive, it would quickly get monotonous. Don't have Xbox One so I didn't play it yet, but I definitely like that approach.

TheXgamerLive3463d ago

Yes, easily GOTY but if anything theirs a little too much action. I myself would like a little more puzzle Solving and exploration. That said its still my GOTY. Fallout 4 was 2nd to me.
Add some FO4 exploration to Tomb Raider and hells yea, Perfect game.

t-hall7853463d ago (Edited 3463d ago )

@Rimeskeem sorry about being in "defense mode" lol. I may have read it wrong i was at work on my phone that wasn't supposed to be out soooo yeah. My bad.

@The_BlackHeart_ your opinion. I can totally respect that. MGS5 WAS my goty but it kinda got repetitive towards the end and as far as storywise, you could almost tell when kojima left. (maybe a little after chapter 1 was over) because there is no way in HELL he would've let the game have repeating story missions like that over and over..
Haven't played bloodborne or fallout. just purchased witcher a couple days ago.

@TheXgamerLive yeah I could've used a few more tombs or tomb like areas but overall it was pretty awesome. My first playthrough i used stealth the whole time. The next one was all guns blazing. Almost like 2 different games.

Dirtnapstor3463d ago

This game was fantastic! Excellent in many respects. So worth the many hours I put into this game. I will rebuy for the PS4 at some point to add to my collection.

ThePresentIsAgift3463d ago

PMSL, people disagree that the individual is entitled to his GOTY opinion?

Some people maybe think Fallout 4 or The Uncharted collection is their GOTY and that's fine by me. Unless I have misinterpreted the scenario somehow, is it not comparable to me saying that I like 1990's vehicles and then someone else saying that I didn't like them.

Only on Negativity 4 Gamers.

"In what could be a soft but sly jab to Uncharted"
Or he could just be making a statement on his beliefs of game design.

Eonjay3464d ago

No I don't think so. There is only drama there if you are looking for it. Is someone really tying to accuse an Action Adventure game of being full of action and adventure?
Why can't he just be saying something positive about his approach without attacking someone else?

NukaCola3464d ago

Definitely a jab at UC4 demo. I don't think that scene was redundant at all though. Quite a variety in fact.

Sunny_D3463d ago

Please. I guarantee no one reading this article would have even thought what the dev said was a jab at Uncharted if it wasn't for the clickbait the author used for his first sentence. You see what you want to see.

MadLad3463d ago

It was just a designer speaking of his design philosophy.
People need to get a grip and stop looking for drama where there is none.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 3463d ago
LeCreuset3464d ago

Agreed. It seems a bit of a stretch and I credit the dev with enough intelligence not to pick that fight.

OC_MurphysLaw3463d ago

Sadly we can't credit the author or many on N4G with the same sensibilities.

KwietStorm_BLM3463d ago

The Tomb Raider reboot was more like Uncharted than Tomb Raider anyway, so yea it would be kinda silly for him to be saying that. But let's plant the seed because console wars and internet and such.

GordonKnight3463d ago

Your reasoning is the reason why we can't believe what most people say, due to biased opinions and agenda by the media. Atleast it's just video games and is not global politics. Wait a minute global politics is worse than video games when it comes to issues like this in the media. We will never know the real truth.

Salooh3463d ago

That's why i made a system. If i am not there i won't claim that i know the truth. To know the truth you must know every side story without complete hate. Be fair to everyone by knowing their intentions. Then i will know the truth , because i will know who lied , who didn't see the truth , who saw the truth and hide it for interest and the people who spoke the truth. Otherwise, if someone talked about a cause like syria it will be just his side which will be unfair to everyone else.

For example , going to the moon . ( Yes, i will be talking about that lol ). I didn't see it , i don't know anyone that i trust that experienced the actual event at some way. Even if i did i will just take it as a good source but not take it completely as a fact because there is more into it like studying the logic of the operation and evidences. So even if it happened, without real honest study of the subject i won't have a good opinion or a real fact of that subject.

Yes , i will be with the helpless and the right side. But not everything is black and white to immediately judge it. That if you want to be fair with all people. Same with games but more simplified lol ...

Salooh3463d ago

It is very hard to know the truth of something you didn't experience, sometimes even if you see something doesn't mean you covered all the truth. So there must be an honest / selfless system to show it. Otherwise, i won't go claim something without real full evidence, i don't want to be unfair to anyone so that i don't have regrets in my life.

SCW19823463d ago

I love how he thinks uncharted doesn't have those quieter moments before the big set pieces. What a click bait article.

Imp0ssibl33463d ago

You mean five minutes of easy as cake platforming? I'm sorry but Tomb Raider is a lot more varied.

SCW19823463d ago

If you really think those are the only moments in uncharted than clearly you haven't played them.

eyeDEVOUR3464d ago

Hey says this AFTER we all complained that the game had too much action, and then it flopped.. Reverse psychology?? LOL

It should be about 85% tombs and 15% action.

Alexious3464d ago

If it had that split, the game would have "flopped" (in sales terms) a lot harder.

MRMagoo1233463d ago

How on earth could it have done worse sales wise really besides no sales.

Free_Fro3464d ago (Edited 3464d ago )

I wouldn't buy that game...

Don't quit your day Job please...

starchild3464d ago

Nope, that's not what I want in a modern Tomb Raider game. I haven't played Rise of the Tomb Raider yet, but from what I've read and seen of the game I think it has a good mix of exploration, combat, puzzles, traversal, general action, collecting, upgrading, etc.

kaiserfranz3464d ago

It definitely does. Much better than both the Tomb Raider reboot and Uncharted games so far.

Let's see if Uncharted 4 is more varied.

t-hall7853464d ago

Aggreed @kaiserfranz. i played the reboot and while it's fun. it's hard to go back after playing rotr. got uncharted 4 preordered after playing through the trilogy and i agree. not comparing apples to oranges just fun to fun and i enjoyed rotr more than any of them.

omegaheat3463d ago

I was quite surprised just how different the pacing felt compared to 2015's reboot. You can tell the devs put a lot of thought into balancing the game's exploration and action. I also love the option to play stealth and avoid unnecessary encounters with a swarm of enemies when the time is right to lay low.

Articuno763464d ago (Edited 3464d ago )

That ratio is actually a pretty accurate description of RoTR.

85% non-shootouts (exploration happens outside of tombs too, though puzzles are mostly within tomb areas) to 15% of shooting action.

It really stands out in contrast to TR2013, but even on its own terms because not only is there relatively little action over the course of the game, but it's also quite sparsely placed as well.

Imp0ssibl33463d ago

The Uncharted fanboys here don't get it. Unless Naughty Dog significantly overhauls the formula with Uncharted 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider will be the superior game.

jb2273463d ago

@impossible

Ever played Uncharted? With comments like those I find it hard to believe. Either way they are different games w/ a few shared similarities. ND doesn't need to overhaul their game to copy TR because what they do was worthy of phenomenally high praise from most outlets & gamers.

That said, they have already shown off much larger areas, dialogue options & they have yet to showcase the overhauled treasure hunting system that they detailed a bit back at the reveal, where there would be a deeper treasure system w/ expanded lore.

For my tastes, TR is absolutely phenomenal, but even if UC4 were just more of the same, it'd still be better to me personally. If having an actual preference makes me a "fanboy" then so be it. Let's just wait until it drops before we start comparing the two.

SCW19823463d ago

It's very apparent impossibl3 is talking out of his butt when it comes to the uncharted series. Kids never played them.

ThePope3464d ago

It flopped eh? What are the current numbers and those the developers and publishers wanted it to do?

Could you also include digital as that matters.

Thanks!

3463d ago
ThePope3463d ago

@Bruce

What reports would those be? I mean I've read articles speculating but they don't know jack. Please tell me which reports you're reading.

Lots of games have not released any numbers and are far from flops as is RoTR.

Deathdeliverer3463d ago

@bruce

How did Microsoft make the mess? No matter what they promised or offered, it did not have to be accepted. Any "mess" is all the fault of the developer.

SCW19823463d ago

Please dude don't be in denial of how poorly it's doing with sales didn't even chart in top 10. It's a great game but don't act like it's not a flop commercially. And yes Microsoft releasing this same day as Fallout 4 was the dumbest move they could have made.

ThePope3463d ago

@SCW

The point that you cats seem to be missing is you don't know if it sold poorly because you don't know what it was expected to sell.

SCW19823463d ago

Wow dude your delusion of square being okay with how well It sold is really sad. It tanked. It's a great game but don't think for an instant square and Microsoft are okay with the numbers it put up.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 3463d ago
monkeyDzoro3464d ago

I don't think that ration would be good. "Casuals" would be put off very easily and sales wise the game will flpo harder than it did now.

They are trying to take Lara in a new direction. More survivor less badass and they're still failing in achieving it IMO. Instead of a survivor, Lara seems more like a happy-trigger run and gun well trained machine of mass destruction. Choking foes in 2secs and handling guns better than militaries. There's a clear contrast with what they tell us Lara is and what Lara does.

At this point, besides the visual damages, Lara is not really struggling. Resources are everywhere and the game doesn't make you feel like you have to make every piece count. Especially with the poor AI... on par with Assassin's Creed one. Not something to be proud of.

They should take TLOU route instead of Uncharted. More stealth, more struggle in melee combat, exploration and crafting with ACTUAL SURVIVAL elements. Resources should be scarce. And the AI should be improved !!

And the tombs... Tombs here are merely 5min tasks where the outcome is a gear to craft a weapon... They should be more complex like dungeons (Zelda for example). In a game called "Tomb Raider", they should be the focus not the SIDEWALK.

eyeDEVOUR3464d ago

Exactly.. So sad nobody else these days can see that.

UltraNova3463d ago

"In a game called "Tomb Raider", they should be the focus not the SIDEWALK."

+1 bubble for the most accurate quote.

Ezz20133463d ago (Edited 3463d ago )

*** They should take TLOU route instead of Uncharted. More stealth, more struggle in melee combat, exploration and crafting with ACTUAL SURVIVAL elements. Resources should be scarce. And the AI should be improved !! ***

well, they will read that and make a sequel
*The Last of Tomb Raider*
and put TLOU gameplay into that sequel.

PhoenixUp3464d ago

Idk how this is a jab at Uncharted since that franchise also focuses a lot on puzzles and platforming.

Could just be his feelings toward game design

Thatguy-3103463d ago (Edited 3463d ago )

Uncharted focus more on cinematic game play. The puzzles and platforming are basic. The series played with it in Drake's Fortune but found its identity in Among Thieves. Uncharted is a story driven game where plot, writing, voice acting, character performance all play a big part in the experience. The same can't be said about the Tomb Raider games where it relies more on puzzle and platforming

kayoss3463d ago

I agree with dboy, Uncharted main draw is its story telling. this is mainly what go gamers running to it, same goes for The last of us. I like the first Tomb Raider a lot because of Laura's origin story that drew me into the game. I played a little bit of the sequel and I am planning to buy the game when it comes out to Ps4.

ApocalypseShadow3464d ago

If it is a slight jab, it would be poor judgment to do so.

being that the uncharted series has won more awards and is accepted more by the gaming community than the tomb raider series lately.

Naughty Dog must be doing something right striking the right balance.

And someone must be doing something wrong that tomb raider continues to be rebooted trying to find that first game magic.

smashman983464d ago

Oh c'mon don't bite the bait no one is coming at Uncharted. And at no point has this man implied that at least not from the quote that is given

343_Guilty_Spark3463d ago

If you swapped the titles of the games and the main characters I bet the story would be very different.

But a good game is a good game to me I don’t care when they release personally but they do have to think about it when you want to get more people to buy it.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

gamerant.com
isarai893d ago (Edited 893d ago )

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness891d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch891d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730891d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior891d ago (Edited 891d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot893d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto891d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior893d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B891d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws891d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730891d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69891d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.

lelo2play1272d ago (Edited 1272d ago )

You got to be kidding!
The first one was great at the time... but this latest trilogy of Tomb Raider games are also great.

LiViNgLeGaCY1272d ago

I think he means the first one in the new trilogy.

CrimsonWing691271d ago

I meant the first of the new trilogy.

Furesis1272d ago

yeah i remember liking the first one when it came out, so i tried the second one sometime after release and i just could not get into it, i couldn't finish it. So i might try the 3rd now that i got it for free but ehh. But i do remember enjoying the first one, i wonder if i'd feel the same way if i played it today? Better not taint those memories lol

I was the same for some reason. Never finished the second one. I got like half way through maybe.
