Rise of the Tomb Raider coming soon to the Windows Store

Recently, a listing on Steam seemed to verify that Rise of the Tomb Raider was on its way to Windows 10 gamers, sooner than originally expected. Taken as a rumor, there was no official word on the validity of this finding. Originally expected to be available via Steam, it now seems like Microsoft is going to be making the game available via their own venue.

not on steam (yet) so i imagine not all pc owners will be happy with that. guess microsoft doesn't think they need the exposure and won't want to give up 30% profits.

EDIT

i stand corrected, it is listed for january on steam. i guess steam is just too much of a juggernaut to ignore. maybe more people would buy ea games if they had them on there too. i wouldn't put it past microsoft to have a small timed exclusive deal on the windows store but it isn't their ip so maybe they have no say.

Eonjay3453d ago (Edited 3453d ago )

Interesting theory. It is worth mentioning though that Microsoft has been looking for ways to compete with Valve in that arena too. Right now, they have an incredible lead on the PC side. Its interesting that Microsoft waited so long to mount an assault.

Edit... and yes it is on steam too.

The_BlackHeart__3453d ago (Edited 3453d ago )

Microsoft has the same chances of catching up with the PS4's console market share, that they have competing against Steam on PC: Zero

Articuno763453d ago

It has an official Steam page. And not one that went up by accident (it's been up there for days without being pulled). So a Steam store release is guaranteed.

So does that mean that us X1 owners of the game will get the PC version for free? You know since a universal store and all.

343_Guilty_Spark3453d ago (Edited 3453d ago )

This needs to happen and fast. In fact, Microsoft needs to create an Xbox store separate from the Microsoft Store. Enable cross buy, cross play and boom!!

Lennoxb633453d ago

I believe Killer Instinct and Gears UE are free on PC to owners of the X1 versions. So I don't see why this wouldn't be.

LackTrue4K3453d ago (Edited 3453d ago )

Hu?! Lol...there bring it to pc, to pull sales! Not just hand them out for free.
And it's game is not made by MS studios.

IIFloodyII3453d ago

Probably not ,I'm assuming the cross-buy games will be for a select few (mostly indie) games and not everything, though It'd be nice if it was.

Lennoxb633453d ago

Killer Instinct and Gears of War are not indies.

IIFloodyII3453d ago (Edited 3453d ago )

Hence why I said "mostly", not "all", and neither of those are AAA, 1 is a remaster, the other a F2P fighting game.

Lennoxb633452d ago

Killer Instinct and Gears are AAA. Doesn't matter what form they came in, both are big games. Is the Uncharted Collection or the GOW Remaster AAA? Yes. Their original releases are AAA so that doesn't change because it got remastered.

F2P can also be AAA. Like Fable Legends.

IIFloodyII3452d ago (Edited 3452d ago )

Even if AAA is a completely meaningless term now, due to everything being AAA , even when they are objectively not (basically 99% of games that release now). I don't put remasters in the same category as brand new AAA releases, and F2P is F2P, there is nothing AAA about Fable Legends, look up what AAA means if you don't believe, few games actually meet the requirements to be considered AAA.

XanderZane3453d ago

Probably not going to happen since Microsoft doesn't own Tomb Raider. They own Killer Instinct and Gears, so they can cross-buy those games with no problem.

This entire timed exclusive deal just seems really pointless both in hindsight and retrospect

freshslicepizza3453d ago

all timed exclusives are pointless when you break it down.

2pacalypsenow3453d ago

They weren't for Ps2 with GTA 3- San Andreas

freshslicepizza3453d ago

@2pacalypsenow
"They weren't for Ps2 with GTA 3- San Andreas"

of course it was. all it did was delay the release for xbox owners but they did get an improved version. timed exclusive deals do not benefit consumers.

starchild3453d ago (Edited 3453d ago )

@2pacalypsenow

Yeah, not for the gamer though. They don't benefit the gamer, they're more of a way for platform holders to gain an angle over their competitors.

Basically what moldybread said.

jb2273452d ago

Totally agreed...now sure how so many people can actually disagree w/ that sentiment. Timed exclusivity is money wasted from publishers & consoles that could be spent towards actual games instead of some intangible bragging rights....it is goodwill dashed by devs for their franchises, spurning an entire fanbase, and it is ulimately unfair to gamers to buy into a series based off of its multiplat status, only to have to wait for new installments for indeterminate amounts of time.

I'm all for full console third party exclusivity, because those scenarios fully illustrate that the game wouldn't have existed otherwise, but the entire idea of timed exclusivity only amounts to some advertising costs alleviated. I doubt that companies could fund a game even if they wanted to, because that would get tricky in terms of what they may own in regards to the game, then there's the whole idea of why would a company fully fund a game that they only stand to profit off of for a small window of time?

I am really trying to stick to my guns and not pick up RotTR (even though it is one of my favorite franchises) unless they add some significant new content at a reduced price. If they just release the base game for full price then ask for money from dlc, I'm most definitely going used, even though I'd love to be able to play the game, the sooner the better. Just can't support these practices and reward the people who make these backwards decisions. That said I'm hoping that this is the last vestige of old MS working through the system because I recall Spencer saying they aren't interested in timed deals moving forward after RotTR. Hopefully all consoles follow suit. I know FF7 is timed on Sony's side, but judging by the comments on this site in regards to JRPGs it doesn't sound like many MS fan would care or be bothered by that move in the slightest.

if you were to stick to your guns you'd be missing out on quite a few games because how far are you willing to take that stance? we've seen it also applied to dlc tactics in games like destiny and call of duty.

you also mention ffvii and about the ms fanbase not caring, does that now exempt your stance?

@ moldy

Not when the timed exclusive actually boosts hardware sales, which Rise of the Tomb Raider failed to do

PhoenixUp3453d ago

@ moldy

GTA still dramatically increased PS2 sales from the timed exclusivity, do there was a point to that deal. Even Microsoft realized how big a franchise GTA was and paid for timed exclusive DLC which also made sense and had an impact.

This timed exclusive deal for Rise of the Tomb Raider made no sense and had very little impact

The_BlackHeart__3453d ago (Edited 3453d ago )

The way I see it, Microsoft understand human nature. They wanted to win Global sales at least for a week, and use this momentum as PR to set the idea in our minds that the XB1 can beat the PS4. So they condensed all their efforts and games in one single attack: November 2015. Instead, they lost NPD.

PhoenixUp3453d ago

Microsoft should know by now that there is never a chance of XO beating the PS4 worldwide even for a week.

1/3 of all PS4s have been sold in the US alone, and it still regularly beats XO in the region that over 1/2 of all XOs are sold on a monthly basis. A game like ROTR wasn't going to make up the huge difference in Europe, Asia, and RoW.

XanderZane3453d ago

They're probably concentrating more on the U.S. then anywhere else right now. And South America where the XB1 had been selling better.

Zero Dawn sold really well so I’m not sure this belongs. The second game released next to a big game again and it hurt it some I forget what it was though, oh yeah Elden Ring .
But a good game is a good game to me I don’t care when they release personally but they do have to think about it when you want to get more people to buy it.

The Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy's Take on Lara Croft Deserved More Recognition

The Survivor Trilogy was a drastic reimagining of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider, and it provokes changes for the character that are truly fantastic.

isarai883d ago (Edited 883d ago )

Deserves less IMO, i think the 1st in the new trilogy was a perfect 1st step for the new direction. The next 2 games were half steps at best. Not only that, every character in the series including Lara is just annoying and doesn't make sense in terms of motive, like yes they have a motive, but none of it seems proportional to the lengths they are willing to go through for it. The most annoying thing is every one of the games say "become the Tomb Raider" yet 3 games later and we're still not there? No thanks. Then there's the mess of the 3rd game, massive skill tree that serves almost no purpose as there's literally only like 3-4 short encounters in the whole game, and they took till the 3rd game to finally manage some decent puzzles even remotely close to previous games in the series. Nah, the trilogy infuriated me to no end as a long time fan of the series, i hope we get better going forward cause that crap sucked.

Army_of_Darkness881d ago

The first in the trilogy was my favorite. I thought they were going into the right direction with that one until the second one came out and seemed like a graphical downgrade but the gameplay was okay. As for the Third, Graphics were really nice but it was kinda boring me to death with its non-stop platforming and exploring with not enough action! Well, for me anyway...

DeathTouch881d ago

Graphics on the 3rd one were abysmal. It’s more colorful and has more variety, but everything else was a noticeable downgrade.

The more open world with NPC quests was also handled very poorly, to the point I missed Angel of Darkness.

thesoftware730881d ago

I know it is your opinion, but she did progress as a character in each game, she even got more muscular and seasoned.

That is the thing, people first complained that there was not enough platforming and actual tomb raiding in the first and second games. Shadow remedied that and kept the combat elements.

3-4 encounters? huh? did we play the same game? there was plenty of combat and, the skill tree did matter, like being able to hang enemies from trees, set explosives traps on bodies, being able to counter, and that are just a few of the combat skills. The skill tree also had things like being able to hold your breath underwater longer, crafting upgrades, zipline upgrade, and climbing upgrades that all changed how you can approach situations.

Not knocking your opinion, but we definitely had different experiences. I had 98% completion on the shadow.

SoulWarrior881d ago (Edited 881d ago )

Sorry but i'm with him about the low number of encounters, the game throws loads of weapons and skills you're way with a comparatively low amount of places to actually use them, so they felt under utilised.

-Foxtrot882d ago

Yeah...no

It was awful, for THREE GAMES it was "become the Tomb Raider" where she went back to square one after each game. Not to mention after a huge reaction of killing someone for the first time she then becomes Rambo straight after and goes on a slaughter spree without a single other reaction. Her development was all over the place.

She was whiney, weak and in later game a little arrogant and selfish

Oh and the voice actress compared to the previous ones was not as good

Lara Croft deserved better and while they are decent games as they are, we deserved actual Tomb Raider games, we could have had better survival games if they just stuck with the original Lara Crofts origin about her plane going down. Surviving 2 weeks in the Himalayas...I'd have liked to seen that, who knows what mystical threat she could have faced in the mountains or underground some secret concealed cave.

Tacoboto881d ago

I thought Shadow of the Tomb Raider had better gameplay than Rise, but it annoyed me the most of the trilogy when I stopped to think about the story.

It's like they deliberately decided to make her unlikeable and did nothing to make the character you're playing as likeable or have even one sign of humility.

SoulWarrior882d ago

2013 I thought was a fine entry, but Rise and especially Shadow were painfully mediocre follow ups imo, I really didn't like how selfish and angry her character was in those two.

Terry_B881d ago

No. Please forget the crap completely.

northpaws881d ago

First one was decent, played through it twice.
Second one was okay, played through it once.
Third one was really bad, tried twice a year apart, still can't get through the first two hours, it is just really bad.

thesoftware730881d ago

Honest question, what did you find bad about it? the opening 2 hrs of Shadow were fantastic imo.

The opening was very similar to the first 2, what did you find really bad?

Not looking for an argument, just an honest question.

Starman69881d ago

3rd one just didn't feel like a tomb raider game. Possibly because the development was passed to another development team. Big mistake! Microsoft killed tomb raider making the first game a timed exclusive. Never recovered after that.

They're all solid games, but nothing quite matched the epicness of the first one for me. I think the 3rd one started off strong but once you got to that Peruvian area it took a massive nose dive for me.

lelo2play1261d ago (Edited 1261d ago )

You got to be kidding!
The first one was great at the time... but this latest trilogy of Tomb Raider games are also great.

LiViNgLeGaCY1261d ago

I think he means the first one in the new trilogy.

CrimsonWing691261d ago

I meant the first of the new trilogy.

Furesis1261d ago

yeah i remember liking the first one when it came out, so i tried the second one sometime after release and i just could not get into it, i couldn't finish it. So i might try the 3rd now that i got it for free but ehh. But i do remember enjoying the first one, i wonder if i'd feel the same way if i played it today? Better not taint those memories lol

ANIALATOR1361261d ago

I was the same for some reason. Never finished the second one. I got like half way through maybe.

ActualWhiteMan1261d ago (Edited 1261d ago )

The first one of the latest trilogy is a masterpiece

Fishy Fingers1262d ago

I'll take a copy of Shadow... Cheers.

Profchaos1261d ago

Great games I've played them all on ps4 but it'll be good to finally try shadow on my rtx card.

Double_O_Revan1261d ago

Trying to claim them and the store keeps crashing. lol.

gamefreaks3651261d ago

EGS has been having issues all day.

RedDevils1261d ago

Weird I don't has that issue.

Double_O_Revan1261d ago

I finally got it after a while. But it was real bad for a while.

PeeShuter1261d ago (Edited 1261d ago )

Claim games by going to the website and login using ur credentials. I did the same as i couldnt use epic launcher. Also try reinstalling Epic Launcher I did it and it worked.

Double_O_Revan1261d ago

I always go through the website. It was all just down for a while yesterday it seems.
