Xbox Two - No discs, No 4K - release date and possible specs

"Xbox head honcho was recently quoted that Microsoft would be releasing another console at some point in the future - an Xbox Two so to speak - "I fully expect that you'll see another console from us," Phil Spencer said. Well that’s hardly news you might think, company that makes games consoles says it will release another games console at some point in the future. However, the gaming market has changed so radically over the last couple of generations that planning for future hardware is an indicator of Microsoft’s mindset going forward."By Seth Barton

It won't happen, Digital games only make up between 10-20% of game sales so if they want to lose 80-90% of their market then they are already dead.

Godmars2903462d ago

Thing is, with always online subtly becoming a thing - having been a thing since the PS3/360 - most if not all major disc games require patching. Become coasters when the console that has those patches die and the servers go down.

Phunkydiabetic13462d ago

@Godmars290

Have you ever played a console game before? They dont become coasters when the "patches die"(what the hell does that even mean?). If there is no way to get the patch it just means you are playing a game that doesnt ha e any patches....

babadivad3462d ago

80 - 90% of my games are digital so far. I hate dragging disc around. It's also kinda irritating that the game installs and plays off the HDD [taking up all my space* anyway with the disc being used for authentication. Only time I buy physical is when there's some kind of deal going on. That's just me though.

STICKzophrenic3462d ago (Edited 3462d ago )

@Phunkydiabetic1 - He's saying when the console dies that has the patches. If your console dies, and the servers that offer those patches are no longer supported, then you're screwed.

3462d ago
Phunkydiabetic13462d ago

@STICKzophrenic

And that is why I asked if he has ever played a console game before. If the console dies and you cant get the patches anymore the game doesnt suddenly turn into a "coaster". That is fuckin ridiculous. It will be as if the game was bought on day one, you know, before the patches became available?

3462d ago
Godmars2903462d ago

@Phunkydiabetic1:
They don't become coasters, but between online components and ever more multiplayer features, the degree early day-one builds are unbalanced if not broken, they may as well be. Especially if a game's been played only after its been patched.

rainslacker3462d ago

I agree, and I doubt in 4 years it's going to jump substantially unless they actually do something like make the games cheaper to piss off retail. Even then, it'd have to move well about 50% to make up for the losses in the retail market. Even at 50% you'd still see physical, because you just don't want to give up that market. Even music is still released on CD, and digital downloads just passed 50% about 2 years ago. PC gaming market is sort of an anomoly in the overall digital distribution, and I actually have no idea how it actually managed to become the way it did. Kind of happened when I wasn't paying attention, but even then, you can still purchase at retail...although now they have that crappy thing where you still have to download it, so what's the point?

I wouldn't be surprised at a discless option for the digital players out there though. Seems they could make the console cheaper, and maybe push more console sales to people who want a cheaper console off the bat, and then make it back on the overpriced software they'll sell to them for the duration of it's lifetime.

nitus103462d ago

@Godmars290

Not that many console games actually require patching and even if the game has patches the game is normally playable without them.

From personal experience (mainly PS3) I have found the few games I actually patched had better stability and even some extra features although it was still optional to actually add the patch.

A lot of people said the same about paying to play online.

magiciandude3462d ago

Exactly maniac. More and more people are going the digital route this generation as higher end internet connections become more available. I have been buying more games digital myself, especially during sales. Eventually, gamers will accept that physical media's on its way out whether they like it or not. Just like how free PSN having gone the way of the dodo bird this gen.

nitus103462d ago

In some respect you (well someone is) are actually paying for your internet connection so you are still paying for on-line games even if there is no charge for playing that game on the servers.

If you look at the PS4 (the PS3 is still free for most games) you have to pay to play on-line games however there is no charge for access to the store or to download patches.

ngaydazng73462d ago

exactly if MS did this it would be a bigger failure than the xbone launch and we all know how that went. MS is still trying to make up for that 2 years on and going.

HalfFireWater3462d ago

And yet steam sells millions with no disks. And do you realize with the xbox home console option you get effectively two copies of the game. Let's do the math. You by a game at gamestop (@ $60.00) and it ok, when you are done, at most you will get back is $30 and no more game. Or you can pay the $60 bucks for online and have two copies. If you wanted two copies from gamestop you are paying $120.00 bucks and when you are done you will get back $60.00 and have no games for later. I love this new digital age, especially for multiplayer games since no matter the medium, console co-op and single console multiplayer seems to only be for the arcade games. Games like SW Battlefront and COD-Halo-and whatever other shooter they make, all requires two consoles to play with two people. The game makers are moving away from couch co-op and making more like the PC where every player needs a system, a screen, and a copy of the game. Wake up to the present Rip Van Winkle or keep holding on to your disk based games.

Perjoss3462d ago

Its a win-win situation for me. If they release with discs then I carry on having fun with gaming, if they dont then I lose my fav hobby for a while but this also means I'll be doing a lot more of the matress mambo.

kupomogli3462d ago (Edited 3462d ago )

I already collect for past gen consoles, but If no discs, that'll be my main focus. I might eventually buy the consoles, but it'll be around when the gen ends and I'll pick up exclusives I'm interested in for $10 or less at most. My PC right now is more powerful than the PS4, but I prefer to own my games, so I don't play on it as often. PC will be my multiconsole machine if everything goes digital only.

I already ignore purchase of games that are digital only until they're dirt cheap. I'm a Yakuza fan, platinumed 3 and 4, but Sony f'ed up not releasing Yakuza 5 at retail. Great that you actually got it localized and brought it to the west, but no sale with it being digital only.

franwex3462d ago

Sega was in charge of Yakuza 5 not Sony.

rainslacker3462d ago

Same here. Definately not a day one buy for me. When a 2-3 years goes by, and I can purchase lots of games through sales for $10-15 then I'll consider it. There would have to be a damn good incentive going in for me to give up a new gen like that, but like you, I collect my games. Even if in 5 years or so I decide to move on and not collect anymore, there's no way I'm spending $60+ for a game which has no value except for my time playing it. I'm pretty free with my money and buy lots of games now, but that doesn't mean I just throw money away for nothing. I don't even go to the theater except on $5 nights...or special date nights which gets me more than the movie.

I like owning my stuff, and the biggest reason I'm not more into PC gaming is because new releases are expensive, and I own nothing but a license to download the game. Not my idea of value.

kupomogli3461d ago (Edited 3461d ago )

@franwex

Sega developed and owns Yakuza 5, but it's Sony that's localizing it because it was the top requested game. That's the reason it's getting published here in the west. Sega wasn't even going to support it.

Google the information. Here's Sega's PR. "Today is a very special and exciting day for all of us at SEGA. Partnering with our friends at Sony Computer Entertainment America, we just revealed our plan to bring Yakuza 5 to the U.S. and Europe at PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas."

"We’ve received so many requests from our fans to bring Yakuza 5 to the U.S. and Europe. Yakuza 5 also made the top of the list of Sony’s #BuidingTheList campaign led by Gio Corsi at Sony Computer Entertainment and we were moved by all the support given to Yakuza 5 by the PlayStation community."

Translation. "Without Sony's money and Sony putting forth the effort to get the game in the west, we never would have bothered."

franwex3462d ago

What if they used other media instead of a disc...say a flash card or something?

OpenGL3462d ago

Flash memory is much more expensive per GB than optical media like Blu-ray. The next Xbox or Playstation could easily support Blu-ray XL which currently supports 100GB per disc. A 100GB Blu-ray disc only costs a few cents per unit, while 64GB of flash memory probably costs at least a few dollars.

Tech53462d ago

Optical Discs are technically from the 80s and are limited to physical size. Support for physical distribution of games i do agree though.

ColonelHugh3462d ago (Edited 3462d ago )

I don't see discs going anywhere based on limited storage. We're nowhere near the limits of blu-ray this gen, and Sony and Panasonic are working on the Archival Disc, with exponentially greater storage (in it's industrial size at least) than our current server farms hold. A single commercial sized disc will hold more than a Terabyte.

If anything, we should worry about Hard Drive types and prices, as we'll need some big ones in a gen or two.

Crazywhitie3462d ago

Next-gen “Archival Disc” will squeeze 1TB of data onto optical discs.....

jb2273462d ago

I'm with you...although it probably wouldn't be solely down to the lack of physical media...the trends of this gen to favor open world rpg's & online only games has me thinking that the longer that stuff proliferates, the fewer games I'd actually care about. Sad that this is looking like my last gen. Might just get a decent enough PC to run some of the better indies next gen & forego consoles altogether because I'm starting to lose the plot in terms of what publishers & devs seem to be focusing on. Heard that one of my most anticipated games, the SW Amy Hennig game will likely be an open world rpg the other day and that kinda news seals the deal for me. Why anyone would waste such a great storyteller & amazing dev on something that is outside of both of their wheelhouse solely to fit into current trends is beyond me. Pretty certain if that game goes that route that it won't have nearly the potential it could have otherwise.

sammarshall1023462d ago

Same for me. If Microsoft goes digital - only next gen then I'm getting a PS5, if both consoles have it then I might be done with this hobby

rainslacker3462d ago

I'll just become mainly a retro gamer. Will give me time to finally catch up on my immense backlog, and as a bonus, I"ll have a few hundred dollars each month I won't be spending, so maybe I can do something productive like getting back into woodworking again with some nice tools.;)

RiseofScorpio3462d ago

Yeah ok I bet you promised to do the same for pay to play online.

ChickenOfTheCaveMan3462d ago

I wish they would announce the next console will have a physical poker chip like device that you'd buy, that thing would go into a slot in the console and once it's in you'd be able to play an installed game. You could then lend/trade/sell that chip once you're done with the game.

Digital chip (unlock) would still be available for one console.

No discs, but nothing really changes.

madjedi3462d ago

I wouldn't have a problem if they throw the disc drives out, it is a old technology that is more hassle than its worth.(heat/failure prone)

But they still need a medium for the people that want a physical product, I hope they shift to a flash memory based cartridge.

However by then it may have ssd's as default so the disc read speed may not be an issue.(This is at least 3-4 yrs from now)

Eventually consoles will have to get rid of the slower components, that hold the rest of the system back.

BG115793462d ago

It can "Do' 1440p but would look bad 1080p would look better, when I tried it on my x930 1440 looks blurry compared to 1080p or 4k, also it would cause confusion for people since there's no 1440p Tv and tv's suck at displaying custom resolutions.

Peace_Love_and_FPS3462d ago

I've found that Nvidia control panel can fix it (I run two 44 TVs with a sideways 32 between them). Basically able to set any resolution, so change it to what you need.

TripleCs3463d ago

I'm not going to be part of an all digital future where publishers have total control of the content that I buy without me having the option to choose whether I want to buy my games psychically or digitally. No disc = no buy. That goes for any console, including the PlayStation 5.

Brettman20083462d ago (Edited 3462d ago )

I would much prefer digital downloads to game streaming. A game streaming future would be horrible.

Rayven3462d ago

Not sure why you would reply with that, he didn't say anything about streaming. The article did.

If console manufacturers insist on trying to make game streaming mainstream, they're pretty much going to have to upgrade the internet service of atleast half the world. Not to mention the latency or ping that game streaming creates. And isn't streaming more costly for manufacturers anyway? Especially if you decide to combat high ping by building servers in each continents. I'm not Pachter (thank god) but I really can't see game streaming as a viable strategy even after this console cycle.

rainslacker3462d ago

Assuming people were on board for a streaming future, the internet would simply crash for a lot of people due to the high demand that would be placed on it. The current internet isn't keeping up with current expansion, and the huge uptake in current streaming services(movies and the like) has caused the available bandwidth to simply dry up, and then when the government released more of that bandwidth to ISP's, that dried up to. ISP's themselves are getting faster, but that doesn't mean the entire internet is. It grows progressively, but slowly, but there is a physical limit which keeps being hit, and it takes time to simply install new lines...not to mention a huge amount of money and time, which people are getting annoyed having to pay more for in the way of rising internet bills.

It's just the way it is, and it's not going to suddenly be better in 5 years. Maybe in 20 it can keep up, but by then, content will likely require even more space to be streamed due to higher resolutions, and compression can only do so much. So in 20 years, we'll be right back where we started barring some new thing which manages to make our current methods of transfer obsolete, but even then, it still has to be implemented.

BG115793462d ago

Digital and streaming, are both bad. Streaming is the worse of the two.

SteamPowered3462d ago

PC community gets a very large portion of their games digitally and if anything it's a boon. Sites like GOG and CDKeys can help leverage the prices of new games. Digital gaming isn't all doom and gloom. I haven't used a disc in 5 years.

Phunkydiabetic13462d ago

The moment consoles start pricing their digital games like Steam is the moment Im down. I can get the game brand new physically at the same price as online and trade it in and roll that dough towards a new game when Im done.

kenwonobi3462d ago

Me too. I'll give up gaming. I'll buy the console that's all discs. Including if it's only NX. Then that's the only console I'll by next generation of its only NX disc based.

Herbalistic3463d ago

I doubt MS would be stupid enough to go disc free after the huge drm backlash from the Xbox One

Eliseo6763462d ago

And even more recently, the Halo 5 editions that came without disc.

I fully expect Microsoft to come with some sort of "plus side" to going disc free, but I don't expect the removal of this feature any time soon.

rainslacker3462d ago (Edited 3462d ago )

I recall saying MS wouldn't be stupid enough to restrict used game sales and require a connection for their console before they annouced the X1. I defended them pretty heavily on it because a lot of people were hating pretty hard due to Adam Orths implication, which didn't actually mean they were going to do it.

I was actually, for the first time in a long time, actually just incredulous and left speechless for a while when they actually confirmed it. I honestly thought that would be the end of them because I didn't think they'd change it. Luckily for them they did, but they have some good data now on how it will affect their sales...so maybe they'll wait for someone else to do it instead, or god forbid, the console makers will have some back room meetings to all agree to go ahead with it to force the market change.

@Eliseo

I couldn't believe MS would actually release a collector's edition without an actual game inside. I actually wondered if MS knew what people collect when they buy CE of games. Being able to trade in the code for a retail version was a nice gesture, but it means opening up a pretty expensive collector's editions, and that doesn't happen as one might think.

BG115793462d ago

Yeah right, it's even like, don't they learn?

PS5 price increases prove that console generations are truly screwed, if they’re not already dead

The recent PS5 price increases have proven that the old format of console generations are no longer viable for game companies.

It's greed. Next gen prices aren't gonna be much better. I won't be surprised if next gen games are at 80. Then Sony, MS and other devs will do the usually PR of the most powerful console ever or fastest SSD or whatever to "justify" the price hike.

They'll further push ppl to PC.

Tacoboto63d ago

"It's greed"

Oh. Please do tell us how. What components are getting cheaper?

"They'll further push ppl to PC."

Oh. Ok so Nvidia and their pricing is not greedy, then?

shaenoide63d ago

Companies making billions of dollars in profits every year is more than enough.

rokos63d ago

Another comment on the topic pointed out how how when the PS5 launched the NVMEs of this size were around £200 and now they are around £60 moreover they are using the old 7nm nodes for the CPU and GPU are getting cheaper with time and not more expensive. Both AMD and Nvidia are manufacturing their GPUs on the 4/5nm for a second generation. That is about the components
The push to PC might happen by pushing people to spend the money they would have for a console to make their PC better since most people have a PC or a Laptop. Then those people could take advantage of the more competitive nature of the PC ecosystem (Stem, GOG, Epic) and free online multiplayer. I don't think that would be a large number though.

Lightning7763d ago

Why aren't the components going down? Why are the components rising in cost?

Why are Nintendo prices going up, PSN prices going up and the inevitable GP price gonna go up?

Cacabunga63d ago

Console gen will die when console games die. We are in a slow curve but not close to claim death of console gen

senorfartcushion63d ago

Reaper22_63d ago

I guess some people are saying if you're paying PC prices for consoles you might as well just buy a PC.

Tacoboto62d ago

"The complicit folk like this comment above are what ruin the hobby.... Apologists claiming it's not the corporations fault, it's your fault..."

If you want to bury your head then that's your choice but I think gamers also need to be held accountable for the environment they've curated.

Like, I certainly didn't teach Sony any pro-consumer lessons by buying the $200-$250+ collector's editions of TLOU Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and the discless GOW Ragnarok Jotnar Edition. What are PS5 Pro buyers teaching them buying a $700 console without a disc drive?

What lesson has Nintendo learned, with MK8 DX selling some 60+ million units, no price drops on Switch hardware, while selling defective joycons for 8 years on their most profitable hardware platform?

What about Microsoft and Xbox, what lessons should they take away from practically giving their games away, to declining/flatlining hardware sales?

Once you think about that, I encourage you to then factor in the reality of the ever-increasing-costs of hardware production, shipping, tariffs and taxes, and the salaries of those they employ...

Games_People_Play63d ago

Nvidia isn’t the only GPU manufacturer out there. In fact, IMO AMD is killing it now with CPUs and GPUs. There is also Intel now, for more budget minded gamers.

Eonjay63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

I don't buy that. Consoles don't exist inside of a vacuum. Everything is going up. Does that mean that everything is screwed? PC gaming isn't a solution is the issue is rising costs. Neither are dead. The real issue is that consumer income has not keep pace with inflation.

There are more adults gaming than kids but the media that caters to us still treats us like children who can't hold complex ideas and critical thinking.

kayoss63d ago

it is also common knowledge that most consoles are sold at a lost. Its not until later that they release a slim version of the console where they make a bit of profit.

Lightning7763d ago (Edited 63d ago )

Believing? No it's called facts. You know me I always have facts on hand.

https://www.thestationwagon...

kayoss61d ago

@lightning77
So for the last 4 years Sony hasnt sold at a loss. What happens before those 4 years?

kayoss63d ago

For console, its not greed. Companies like Sony are most likely selling the consoles at a lost. Most of their profits and revenue comes from software.

Lightning7763d ago (Edited 63d ago )

Sony aren't selling the console at a loss they make money from it. However Xbox is however they lose about 200$ or so with each console sold. Probably why they're so reliant on multiplat Software sales GP stuff rather than selling consoles.

Profchaos63d ago

Even the switch 2 is being sold at a loss this is a first for Nintendo

Eonjay63d ago

Lol @Lightning77.

Imagine believing that it cost Microsoft $200 more to make the series X than it cost Sony to build a PS5. Imagine getting played so hard when the competition is routinely beating you in non Pro match ups. If that were real (it's not) then of course MS would stop making console because they spending way more to get zero or worse results than a cheaper PS5!

Bateekh63d ago

Extremely L take.

No it will NOT push anyone to PC. You must be quite disconnected from reality. Go ahead and search up prices of just the GPU to be able to play modern games. an RTX 5070 will cost you around $700 alone if not a little more, and if you want a 4K capable machine that can run games at decent settings then you're going to need a stronger card which will run you closer to $1000. We haven't even gotten to the CPU or PSU or RAM or SSD, or Motherboard. A 4k gaming pc capable of running at 30+fps will run you $1500+ minimum, and if you want 60+ FPS then you guaranteed will be over $2000. If you want 2K capable machine then maybe around $1400-$1600 or so.

you bafoons are complaining about what, a $450 console (switch 2) an an $80 game? LOL get real. Console gaming is much cheaper, even PS5 Pro at $700 is a crazy deal compared to any modern gaming PC. So no, nobody is going to PC.

And anybody who thinks it's greed is disconnected from reality and just a brokie looking for a handout. Cry more.

Lightning7763d ago

Then why are all these YT gamers (even PS centric ones) building a PC? gaming publications and even ppl I know moving to PC or building a PC? Allot more than they have last gen?

Yep must me all in my head I guess.

So you can afford These prices and price hikes. Sounds like a child with mom's money or someone who has absolutely no life of his own.

NotoriousWhiz63d ago

^ Ironically, having a life is one of the main reasons to go console over PC. No tinkering, no googling or searching protondb to figure out if a game will work on your PC. Just turn it on and press play.

Jawsh66659d ago

It is greed, but this isn’t standard greed and by that I mean these price increases aren’t just wealthy businessmen increasing costs just because they can. This is partially an effect of tarrifs and the prices are just gonna keep going up regardless of if we’re talking PC or Console.

Ps5conehead63d ago

You want to know what greed is it’s insulin pump manufacturers. I have to pay 600 a month . For pump supplies. I have no choice but to spend it. But you can decide if you want a console are not. Mine is life and death. This here is gaming

Extermin8or3_63d ago

First episode of new series of black mirror is for you i think....

Jingsing63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

The sad thing is if Microsoft would just bugger off then none of this acceleration-ism to cloud gaming (the end goal) would be happening. They will ultimately use this expensive pricing to have us paying $100 a month for game streaming in the future.

badz14963d ago

maybe going mainstream was a mistake for gaming. sure revenues have increased several folds from the PS2 times due to that but in a capitalistic market, shareholders always want more year after year. 200mil profit this year, and if they only make another 200mil in the next year, it's not considered as a "success" thus people getting fired, studio got closed down just so that they can say that they made "more" than last year for the investors! if only these people are as passionate about gaming like they do about their margin, gaming would still be an enjoyable and affordable hobby.

I'll be looking at how Sony handles the PS6. if things get crazier in pricing than this gen already is, I think I will just stop at the PS5 and not invest in next gen.

I find myself playing games on my pc more and more this generation. I have my PC which I built myself, hooked up to my 65 inch oled tv.
I got Indiana Jones for free with my gfx card, my steam library is 500+ deep. I’m only buying consoles at this point because of physical games. Once the consoles go all digital, I will just be a pc gamer, because I can build whatever I want, without any limitations.

ziggyzinfirion63d ago

Without limitations?? Are you sure about that? 😏

gold_drake63d ago

so u have 500 games u probably even havent played.

arent u part of the problem tho? ha

Games_People_Play63d ago

Most of my games were $5-$10 summer and winter sales. Some of them are F2P.
And about 40 of them were full price release day purchases. My account is almost 20 years old.

Michiel198963d ago

unlike consoles, steam doesn't get a 5-6 year reset on their games, i know this is a shocking revelation. if part of the problem is only having to buy your games once, we sure are guilty

Extermin8or3_63d ago

@michiel1989: alll my ps4 gsmes work on my ps5. So that's approaching 14 years worth of content. Also you say that but it's not strictly true. I own pc gsmes from way way back in like 2007/2008 that literally can't run on modern drivers and stuff. You have to go online and find ancient software and install it and often it conflicts with the modern versions of the same software so you have to deal with that to get those titles running.

Michiel198963d ago

most games since windows xp work fine and if its a title from 1990 i don't mind having the option of not having to buy it again and just run a virtual version of 1998 or something alike to play it, but most often there are way easier fixes. Also i can play multiplayer for games that have been shutdown by the publisher, because the pc community is awesome.

It looks like we are going to a new video game crash like in te 80s. Games are going to cost too much, the PS6 and next Xbox will be a huge and costly dissapointment.

Christopher63d ago

We honestly do not need a new generation of consoles at all. Even PC gaming is seeing more and more reduced gains on technology advances.

carrotcakeag63d ago

The crash was about very poor quality games on Atari in the days before NES even released. Games are much better now and people will never stop playing. Pricing won’t force people to change hobbies because games like Fortnite start as low as free. Most AAA games end up with massive discounts after a while. Nintendo don’t discount but everyone keeps buying them full price anyway. Those are my thoughts when people predict a total industry crash. The industry will rather change and adapt. Companies that fail to adapt will go bust but there will still be big winners like GTA VI.

Erm not really. The coat of hardware and such is all increasing if anything given inflation games have gone down in value since 2007 and even further down in value since the 1990s. What's changed is everyone feels entitled to buy everything new day one and not have to save for anything. Sadly that's just not how the world works.

I’ve already decided that I won’t get a PS6 until the PS7 is released. That way the console will cheaper as will the games and most will be complete editions with all dlc.

I’m too old to be worrying about playing games as soon as they’re released, just so I can say I bought it day one. I will continue to play my last gen and vr games in the meantime as I wait for price drops. This will not push me towards PC gaming though.

DefenderOfDoom263d ago

I still have not bought a PS5 yet . I want to wait till next fall to buy one, hoping they have a price drop on all PS5s . I do not have a PC to game on . Unfortunately I do not think I can wait to next fall because DOOM The Dark Ages is being released on May 15 of next month. .

Abnor_Mal63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

I waited three years before I got my PS5, and to tell the truth it really wasn’t worth it, besides PSVR2.

There aren’t many games for it that is strictly PS5, that I was interested in, many were still available on PS4. The ones that are PS5 only pricing is still a bit high, but I understand you wanting to get a PS5 for DOOM. Hopefully you get one during some kind of sale between now and then.

"no longer viable" as the PS5 out paces the PS4 and that's before GTA6 releases. The Switch 2 will almost certainly be a smash hit also.

What Does Switch 2 Mean for PS6, Xbox?

Welcome back to Next-Gen Console Watch! Ryan and Max are back as they discuss what the Nintendo Switch 2 Pricing means for the eventual PlayStation 6 and next Xbox. Can any console going forward reach the same success as the original Switch? And for handheld gaming PC's and the Xbox handheld, can we expect those to cost $450+, just like the Switch 2? .

gold_drake67d ago

probably not much.

the new gen will have its big appeal for alot of people.

the big question will be if the dwitch 2 will be left behind by devs again due to the games being too demanding, again.

but, and ive said this before, nintendo will be fine without it.
their big selling point is nostalgia and people eat it up.
and thw handheld option, but we are yet to see how the battery life actually holds up.

Abear2164d ago

Portal already allows third party games like Cyberpunk on a handheld so I think people are hyping this up too much. Games will look better on Portal and have better battery life. My only interest in S2 is exclusives.

Lightning7766d ago

Means PS6 and SX2 are gonna be expensive af

OtterX66d ago

doesn't even matter for me, because my Switch 1 was 80% a handheld system for me throughout its lifetime. PS5, then PS6 will continue to be my proper console, bc Nintendo will always stay gimped in that regard. With that said, I'm excited for the Switch 2's extra power solely as a handheld. I don't find the system price unreasonable, but I do find the game prices crazy.

Profchaos65d ago

Yeah tend to agree ps is my main but i travel for work and having a switch has always helped with flights and hotel stays

jznrpg65d ago (Edited 65d ago )

I use to bring my PS5 with me everywhere with a huge case hehe. Now I bring my Portal with me everywhere unless I am going to a cabin with no Wifi and then I bring my Pro with me.

porkChop65d ago

The Switch 2 is, what, $629 CAD? I'm not paying that, I'll wait for a price drop. But I'm just wondering how expensive the next PS and Xbox are going to be. I'm definitely not buying them at launch.

This is where shit is just getting too expensive to be worth it for me. Smaller jumps in visuals each gen, poor quality games in general, many games broken or borderline unplayable on launch, mtx out the ass, higher game prices, etc. For me it's not worth paying so much more for so much less. I'll stick with PC where I have a higher cost but so much more utility and usability for the money.

NotoriousWhiz64d ago

PC upgrade costs are astronomical as well. Furthermore, AAA games on PC will be priced comparably to AAA games on console. If you want cheap quality games, there are hundreds of good indies out there which will run just fine on a console or low powered PC.
