Turok remaster review – retro dinosaur hunter | Metro

One of the earliest console first person shooters is remastered for the PC, but does the old N64 classic still stand up today?

Geobros3415d ago

Turok was one of my favourite N64 game. I don't agree with the score here. The game could stand today next to other FPS games.

*cough* nostalgia goggles *cough* take them off.

This is not one of those endlessly enduring classic games like Super Mario 64 or The original 2D Mario games or even the sonic the hedgehog games on genesis or half life. Turok is very easily dated. Hell, I played it as far back as 2008 and it already felt archaic and dated 7 years ago, so I can't imagine how much worse it would stuck up now, seven years later.

Some games are timeless, but not all games remain good forever. Certain things improve and move forward in the industry and certain elements of design were only acceptable because it was new and we had nothing to compare it to. A game like Duke Nukem 3D, despite feeling a little dated, is still a solid shooter in this day and age. A game like Turok and Goldeneye....they just don't hold up anymore. Let it go, man. Some games I used to love as a kid are nowhere near as good now because sometimes standards and expectations change. Get over it.

You need to look at things for how and what they are.

For a N64 game, for the time it was made, it is good?

And the answer is yes.

The N64 version though, is still superior because of the Fog.

The Fog gave the game a creepy kind of atmosphere because you never knew when a dinosaur was going to pop out of it. It reduced the reaction time and made the battles more tense.

Getting rid of the fog was the worst mistake they could have made for this update they made.

* As a N64 game though, I could play it on my N64 right now and still have a good time playing it.

I enjoy games for what they are and not for what some hipster things they should be.

Turok: A Game Series in Need of a Reboot

The Turok series has been languishing without a new title for more than a decade. It's about time we got a reboot.

I'm all for it, I loved the originals... I just don't think, just like w the original Prey, that the main character can survive in this current political climate. Native characters seem untouchable at the moment. I think it can be shown the right respect, but there's always someone getting upset about something these days, they would find a way to cancel it.

BriBri710d ago

I can't think of a game that's been cancelled because of the race of the main character.

Honestly, I would prefer if they just ported/remastered Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion to modern platforms. So we could have access to the "original 3 games". Because I don't see how to really reboot Turok. It's a product of its time being a mixture of platforming/fps and puzzle.

And I really don't see all those elements being preserved on a Reboot.

I would prefer Dino Crisis remake from Capcom. Still, a remade Turok would get my attention.

Forgets about the 2008 reboot*
I'd rather have a sequel to Turok 3, tbh.

We unfortunately do not have enough quality dino games. Theres Horizon but they're robots, and Monster Hunter that I can only think of. I'd like to see Turok make a comeback some day.

This game came out at the perfect time for me as a kid because was still big into dinosaurs so I played Turok religiously at times. It was also the first 3D FPS I ever played.

SeTTriP1154d ago

This game was ahead of its time

MadLad1154d ago

Easily the best shooters to be had on console before Halo came.

I know Goldeneye is the one always brought up, but this just played well by comparison.

Dinosaur-Themed Video Games Were Once Incredibly Popular. What Happened?

Dinosaur-themed games like Dino Crisis and Turok were everywhere in the late 90s and early 2000s. What happened to this once popular sub-genre?

GaboonViper1419d ago

Would kill for a new Turok and Dino Crisis.

sourOG1419d ago (Edited 1419d ago )

How is it different than any other genre? They milk it for everything it’s worth and oversaturate the market, kill the interest and move on to the next. Then they bring it back after a hiatus.

ZeekQuattro1418d ago

Zombie themed videogames took over.
