Coleco Chameleon, Coleco Holdings and the Real Coleco

Carl Williams writes, "I have covered the development of the RETRO Video Game System for quite a while. I interviewed the former team that were running things. I spent over 20 hours transcribing that interview into text for those that prefer to copy/paste when sharing rather than share time stamps in an audio file. They had a failed IndieGoGo campaign, mainly fingers were pointing at lack of a playable prototype. Now, the people behind the RETRO VGS have partnered with Coleco Holdings and rebranded the RETRO VGS. We now have the Coleco Chameleon to talk about. You may have been seeing stories popping up stating that Coleco was back, resurrected or whatever. You have been lied to. The Coleco that took on Atari is still very much dead."

This Is the Strangest Video Game Console of All Time

A history of one of gaming's weirdest consoles, the Coleco Telstar Arcade, which sported control knobs, a steering wheel and a gun.

phoenixwing1749d ago

seems like it would be expensive to put all those parts in. although i like the idea of having the wheel and gun already in there

BrainSyphoned1749d ago

The rollerball with Slither was where it was at but I remember this puppy as well.

SaveFerris1748d ago

Might work well as a controller for a GTA type of game. Just imagine pointing the gun at the screen while using the steering wheel with your other hand.

Can The AtariBox Avoid Suffering The Coleco Chameleon's Fate?

The Ataribox is exciting, but it definitely brings with it a scary case of deja vu. Here's hoping Atari can avoid the pitfalls of the ill-fated Chameleon.

Looks pretty cool. Like the fake wood paneling.

I seriously don't see how Atari has any chance of major success.

Even longtime veteran Nintendo struggled with Wii U. Even GameCube sold less than newcomer Xbox. Atari, a company known for bad business decisions and almost killing this industry in North America, stands even less of a chance.

XanderZane2839d ago

Well. if they do it the same way Nintendo has done it for the NES and SNES mini consoles, they might do ok. Just release a system for $80 with 50-60 Atari 2600/5200/7800 games already on the system and maybe a chance to buy a couple game packs with 20-25 more games to go with it during the holidays and that's it. They have no chance to compete with the big boys. I don't see many 3rd party developers wasting money to make games for this. They might get a few Indie developers on board, but that's about it.

PhoenixUp2838d ago

@ Xander

I don't even see how that's very viable since Atari itself released their Flashback Classics on PS4 & XO last year. There were two volumes that packed 50 games each and both volumes costed $20 each.

That sounds a lot more feasible & appealing to consumers than buying a new mini console that'd cost more and contain less games than the $40 and 100 games that the two volumes of the Flashback Classics offer combined on platforms more people would already have or end up buying anyway.

PhoenixUp2839d ago

Are we to believe that a company that nearly killed gaming in North America and barely passed by as a third party publisher in recent years has a chance at being a major competitor in the console arena?

They couldn't even keep their flagship franchises relevant and this wouldn't even be their first time trying to stage a comeback.

letsa_go2839d ago

I'm sure they will manage it the same way they have managed Rollercoaster Tycoon World! haha

Klonoa-dreamtraveler2838d ago

well they got new owner during the time they were going bankrupt in 2013 so it's not exactly the same people running it let alone a new company that took over the brand name now how the new owners deal with it is up in the air but comparing this company to the older atari company's mistakes really don't apply.

The AtariOuya.I doubt this project will do well at all.

dead_pixels2839d ago

Not gonna lie, that got a laugh out of me.

XanderZane2839d ago

Ouya died after what, 2 years? Let me check.

Yeah, it lasted from June 2013 - July 2015. Just like I thought.

Anybody else notice that this thing has the same exact inputs that a Raspberry Pi has?
