With four of five nominee’s for best portable game iOS/Android titles, the mobile phone gaming juggernaut now threatens to boot handheld gaming out of its own award.
There is little doubt that mobile gaming will usurp handheld gaming. It's a matter of when, not if, in my opinion. I'm still not convinced that it will be ruin the console and PC gaming market, though. At least it won't in my house!
Wow... this made me physically ill, the news that they've combined smartphone games and handheld games. Eventually gavomited (gagging and vomiting at the same time) upon hearing Monster Hunter 4 didn't win.
wow, I never really thought about this. But I guess I've never really done the mobile gaming thing
It pains me that people don't appreciate proper handheld games anymore. Death to mobile!
Geez that list of nominees is pathetic. Laura Croft Go was pretty boring as well..
Can you relax? "spells disaster" lmao Breaking News @11 handheld gaming is being taken over by mobile games, will have more of this story as it's developing... #GamingApocalypse
I think the rise of the mobile is well and truly underway. It's happening with mobile websites where they are overtaking PC viewing and it will no doubt happen to gaming too
They should be separate or not have a cell phone game category. Handheld (3DS, PS Vita) are a million times better than cell phone games
^This ....And, the Award for Best Cell Phone/Tablet/Mobile Game goes to: Some Cheesy Game 2: The Quest for Dat Cheddar
Right! No one cares what my girlfriends mom thinks the GOTY is.
LOL pretty much
Million times better? Really? Fallout Shelter and Tomb Raider Go are great games. Are they for everyone? No, but neither are most handheld games. I'd definitely rather play either of those over Monster Hunter games. That's just what we call having different tastes. As far as separating them or not, I don't really care. In the end, a good game gets an award. It's not like they're handing out an award to the latest mobile game that is solely aimed at forcing people to hand over more money than it costs. The thing is, mobile gaming as a whole is becoming very stale compared to last generation. People have reached a plateau of sorts for making money and until they stop making money, they won't advance the medium much beyond what it is now.
I don't know about that bud. Games are games.
Mobile will never surpass handheld gaming for me
The sad thing is, that some studios that would put out some great games are now transitioning to mobile only. This is mostly japanese companies but it will soon be normal for most major game companies to put more and more money away from AAA titles and into mobile games.
Portable gaming will be just fine for years to come. Sony may withdraw from the handheld market, but Nintendo will likely come up with quite a few successors for the 3DS before they move on to mobile, and the 500k+ worldwide 3DS sales in the last week of November show that they have no reason to do so anytime soon.
Blame that on the mainstream games press who didn't play Steins;Gate, DanganRonpa: Another Episode, Superbeat Xonic, Monster Hunter 4U, Yo-Kai Watch, etc. Is it a coincidence that an awards ceremony that has never announced a game for handhelds is entirely ignorant to handheld gaming?
