Yep, was calculating the Xbox sales the other day.
Last we heard it almost shipped 10M consoles (last November)

Lets assume they shipped and sold all 10M by 31 Dec. (I know unlikely, but lets offer the highest number possible)

Now throw in all NPD numbers to date -

Jan - 151K
Feb - 276K
Mar - 236K
Apr - 174K
May - 139K
Jun - 297K
Jul - 189K
Aug - 202K
Sep - 280K
Oct - 305K

Total = 2,249 || 2.25M

That's now 12.25M SOLD.

PS4 reached 9M in US back in October.

XB1 is roughly 1M behind = 8M, meaning most sales Xbox gets are in US, would be around 80%-90%.

If we calculate 80% of the 2.25M (2015 sales) that is 450K.

12.25M + 450K = 12.7M being the maximum value sold.

Shipments of course would be higher, possibly even reaching 14M.

Congrats to Sony with the PS4 sales. But I really dont know why gamers care about console sales other then fuel fanboy wars. Less sales for other consoles do not make them lesser consoles. We do not run the business nor are we making money from the consoles selling so why do we care other then to feed our ego.

Many consoles had poor sales but still had great games on them. Remember the Dreamcast commercal failure but had many gems. Gamecube and original Xbox had sales no were near the PS2. But they both had good games. Vita has been butchered by the 3DS but still has few great games in it.

Lesson is as gamers better to experience any great game regardless of platform. If you can afford to own all platforms this way you can play all the exclusives without crying.

More sales, especially in other countries, provides more diversity, creativity, and a whole ecosystem for development. Very few foreign games would arrive on XBox if not for PlayStation having the sales overseas to justify development for them, and the later ports to western areas, if any at all. Bloodborne, Dark Souls, Demons Souls. Most relevant franchises I can think of. Don't ever think sales don't matter. The development budgets are far higher thanks to the huge sales.

Sales are important because install base is the major factor in quality exclusives and even some ports. Many third party games would go exclusive if sales weren't so strong across all platforms. Better sales across consoles means better games. It's logic, not war fuel. Good sales make everyone happier.

Yep, it's ironic. I wasted hours and hours using Windows calculator to divide number of comments by number of years registered on N4G.

Every time i enter in a sales thread, it never fails to amaze me how Xbox fans insist to ignore the entire Planet Earth when it comes to sales.

The Ps4 has been outselling the Xbox One in EVERY region available of this planet.

The Ps3 outsold the X360 EVERYWHERE in the World not called US and UK, thats why it closed the gap and eventually surpassed the Xbox 360 in sales, even tho the Xbox 360 came out a year earlier.

The ps3 never passed the 360 they were even last time they announced numbers. Xbox one is probably close to 25 million shipped if you go buy there quarter numbers. The ps4 is clearly ahead in sales but the xbox is selling very well. Xbox 360 is the reason the ps4 is so good competition is a good thing.

The PS4 is absolutely smashing the bone. PS4 has outsold the Xbox One every single month since they both released in total sales. No gap is closing or has even closed a bit... for that to happen, Microsoft would have to sell more Xbox Ones than PS4 worldwide by at least a single solitary console sale. It has failed to achieve that, therefore the gap gets wider every single month since release. And in my opinion it will never change.

Also, the PS3 has sold more than Xbox360 worldwide and continues to sell more, everyone knows that, but it seems I just found someone who has no bloody clue..

Bigger console base equals more game sales. PS4 is starting to get much more attractive to developers as they sell many more games on PS4. Games that are PS4 exclusive are more likely as the PS4 install base gets massively bigger than Xbox One.

I think you're wrong brettmnan. Actually, consoles that have the smaller install base tend to have more exclusives on them in my experience. Look at the WiiU, Dreamcast or Gamecube which have many exclusives.

Your comment also doesn't invalidate candystop so I don't know why they got some many disagrees. If someone's preference is Xbox and its range of released or coming exclusives (eg Sunset Overdrive, Sea of thieves, Quantum Break), whatever Sony is doing may still be of interest but shouldn't affect their enjoyment. It's not like the PS4 is being so crazily innovative compared to either the PS3 or Xbox One.

By the way, Xone is selling very well compared to X360.

They can't catch up with PS4, but they can keep following having some revenue this way. At least until Nintendo's next console, that will probably be the one that MS will have to worry.

Sales wise it is a clear winner. Sony sold more Consoles then Nintendo and Xbox. Just like Apple sells more Phones then Sony which is a clear winner and 3DS has sold more portables compared to the Vita.

Do sales justify a quality product? Not all the time, in this intense its all preferences, especially in the gaming market.

Wii was a underpowered console with motion games. It had little 3rd party support. Ps4 is the most powerful console and arguably the most support. Two different console generation and scenarios.

The original Xbox was a lot more powerful than the PS2 yet Sony fans weren't harping on about the importance of power then. What's changed? I'll tell you what - a decent proportion of PS4 owners will have actually owned the original Xbox. They will like it when a company offers the best power coupled with some exclusives and/or third party games that they like. And 'die hard' Playstation fans, who don't necessarily think too philosophically about the brand but just like certain games, now use power as a new stick that they can wield with none of the Cell engine cracking to overcome.

The PS2 didn't deserve to sell 110 million units more than the Gamecube and original Xbox combined.
Not on the strength of the PS2 games that actually sold which was less the innovative artsy fare and more the third party games that were often also on Xbox (or Gamecube in the case of Resident Evil 4) and looking better than the PS2 version on there.

That has nothing to do with the context of his response.

PSVR is not going to take away from regular games. Wii was motion-based from the start and many of its exclusives from the start until the end of the gen were motion-based. That was its selling point from day zero. PSVR is a complimentary peripheral with a strong focus halfway through a generation. And from what I've read, PSVR games have a DualShock 4 requirement, so you don't always need to use Move for it. I could be wrong on that particular one, but either way, there will be plenty of future content that is DualShock compatible, since there already is at this moment.

Sony fans are enjoying PlayStation being back on top like it was in the PS1 or PS2 days, with the upcoming lineup to boot. This is not about "PS4 is better because it's selling more". It's just nice to see a brand that was once top, on top again. PS3 stumbled, it launched 1-2 years after the competition, and yet it still sold faster than Xbox 360 and Wii later on. And sales do matter, and always have. You get more support if you sell more and have the hardware to back up the visions of the big publishers who want to make money off selling their games for your hardware.

So full of what exactly? Pride, whilst beating their chests to those in denial that PS4 was always going to win this generation against the competition? That's all I see.

Apparently last gen when xbox fanboys constantly rubbed Playstation fans nose in the fact 360 was selling so much better then PS3 even going so far as to point to sites like VGChartz as proof, you know the very same site they claim is unreliable now, of course. What's wrong if someone cares about sales? This doesn't mean they are fanboys... although in many cases it is used by them to justify their choice (by the way there is no need to justify your purchases to anyone). It is also used by many sites to clicks.

However, If you like to follow the industry and look and how they compete then that's fine. My thesis was focused on the "Console Wars" and looked at market leadership and how many the industry leaders changes and tried to stay relevant... Who survived, who died, why...? Its a good topic, but nothing to get worked up about. Like what you like.

Oh wait that never happened the Dreamcast suffered an early death because it didn't sell well even though it was a good system. The people that say that sales don't matter obviously don't care if their system get's long term support that's why sales matter.

They all know why they've sold as many units as they have. And, broadly speaking, they won't be too worried. Yes, even Nintendo.

If Microsoft and Nintendo wanted to try to sell substantially more console units they'd give free online (like the PS3 did) in the case of Microsoft and reduce the console price in the case of Nintendo (yes, the Wii controller may be costly to make but they'll still make profit on the console given that the processor is not as expensive as the Xbox One or PS4's).

So Microsoft aren't panicking (even if it'd be good for consumers if they did) because they know that Halo 5, Gears of War 4 and, whilst expected to be to a smaller extent, important in a cult sense, Quantum Break, can be system sellers in their own right.

And Nintendo aren't panicking because if they only made so many WiiUs, why reduce the price by a vast amount just so that they have to make a lot more to sell at a low price? And if a WiiU controller can be used on the NX, why devalue the worth of the WiiU when it might be part of the future? Lowering the cost of the Gamecube, which had launched at an already low price, didn't help sales too much. So the best thing that Nintendo can do is launch the NX that isn't much more expensive than the RRP that the WiiU is still selling at- and then make a very clear commercial outlining the differences between the two.

What is the best selling first party game of this generation so far? It's probably Mario Kart WiiU isn't it with sales of between 5 and 6 million? Isn't that amazing on several levels? It's not amazing that it has probably the highest attach rate -it's an iconic series- but to have the actually highest NUMBERS as well on a console that has relatively few console sales and for that number itself to be relatively low (Mario Kart Wii sold 35 million).

If you have a console that aims to make most of its profit from 1st party games and it ends up selling more 1st party games than your competitors then you are in a very sweet spot even if you only sold 10 million consoles. The Dreamcast may have also sold 10 million but its 1st party games often sold only 1 million each.

When the NX launches, Nintendo will be in a strong position if they make the NX more powerful than expected, release it at a not massively high price and (hopefully) make the point of saying that they are the only console that still doesn't charge for online play. I don't think that most people would mind (or notice in the case of some) Nintendo charging for online play if it meant that they gave top end tech.
