Bethesda's Hines Infuriates Fallout 4 Fans; "Not Interested In Discussing How Realistic Things Are"

Bethesda's vice president Pete Hines has displeased a bunch of Fallout 4 fans, by stating that he's not interested in discussing how realistic things are in a game such as Fallout 4. Hines is accused of not caring for the franchise enough.

It's not realistic for a ghoul to survive in a fridge for 200 years but it's realistic that you'd pick up a syringe from a urinal and inject it into yourself for health or a syringe for that matter laying around for who knows how long? On the other hand, yes people do invest big parts of their lives in some video games. People invest their lives in sports, movies, music, etc as well. You yourself have close to 3,000 comments in 1 year in a video game news site so I'd say video games are a good part of your life like they are mine so lets not throw too many stones.

But these fans need to chill out imo. There has always been Easter eggs and weird stuff since Fallout 3 that don't always make sense to the lore so yeah.

Internal consistency is important in a story. If you cannot even keep it consistent, it means you really don't give a crap, or you are amateur enough to miss such a major oversight. Now tell me, which is worse to you? Disregarding the jet, they could have easily made the child in the fridge a comedic undermining of the "Cryo" technology that they shoe horned in to this Fallout. But again, refer to my amateur point.

Ive been a Fallout fan since day one release of the first. I am a "hardcore" Fallout fan. You know what I do that these neckbeards dont? I accept the package that Bethesda delivered for what it is.

This is THEIR game. THEY paid the millions involved in purchasing the rights. They made the game in their vision. If I dont like how the game ended up or what has been changed you know what I do?

It's not about having characters who don't need to poop, sleep, piss or eat. Everyone knows about those ludicrous things in games.

Looking at the first tweet it was just an ordinary inquisitive question about a particular part of the game. That seems typical for a hardcore fan who is deeply invested in the lore so there's nothing wrong for him to ask for some sort of clarification.

There's a lot of ways for Hines to answer that question(tell the truth, lie or even make it mysterious to get the fans talk about it even more) but he chose to piss off a lot of fans.

I know it's highly off topic, but your comment reminds me of an article we were discussing in a game design class that talked about game design principals. I can't seem to find it now, but as I recall, the article was an interview with Kojima, on Metal Gear Solid, about the dynamics of the game play including health regen, and the question was something along the lines of, why doesn't snake die when getting shot with 5-6 bullets? Wouldn't that be more realistic?

The answer was something along the lines of, "We tried that, it just wasn't fun to play."

The creator of Gran Turismo also made similar comments about the same thing about why your car isn't totaled and you're out of the race when you slam into a wall head on at 200mph.

Again, off topic, and a bit different than the "realism" being discussed here, but I always find it fascinating that people seem to expect games to be both fun and ultra realistic. There are always liberties taken with realism both for the sake of game play, and for the sake of doing something with the story...for better or worse.

I think his original comment was fine. Particularly compared to some of the gems he's given in the past.

But nowadays, there seems to be a trend of every time there are 2-3 or maybe 20-30 people upset about something that was said, there comes along an article about that makes a huge claim that all fans are pissed, or a great many of them.

It's gotten rather tiresome, because it's the same thing mainstream media does to make things seem more heinous than they actually are, and more often than not, the innocent or innocuous statement gets blown way out of proportion, sometimes with negative effects to the person saying them.

I for one would prefer that people not have to start guarding their words 100% to try and remain on everyone's good sides, and to remain 100% politically correct. When you do so, everything becomes a mask over reality and getting genuine heartfelt statements. If people are pissed, fine, let them be. I'm very disappointed at the childish way a lot of people respond to Fallout 4. The game is rather amazing and represents a truly massive undertaking that culminates in a sprawling journey a cross a digital world.

Bethesda deserves praise and acclaim for their contributions to gaming. Fallout 4 remains one of the most entertaining and spectacular games I've ever played. Hines is supposed to be a mouthpiece, and an intermediary between Bethesda and its fans -- and THEIR customers-- and to be frank, he doesn't do a great job. He always comes across as unappreciative, arrogant and extremely cranky.

For the record, I'm not on his side (and I'm a huge Fallout 1 & 2 fan), but his manner leaves a lot to be desired.
