What’s Obsidian’s next big thing? No idea, but Tim Cain, the creator of Fallout, is involved in it

Gamepressure asked Feargus Urquhart and Josh Sawyer a few questions about the current condition of Obsidian Entertainment, Pillars of Eternity: The White March – Part II, and a new mysterious project.

Wouldn't mind a new Fallout like what New Vegas was to Fallout 3...although I think with spin off games it would be nice to go outside America.

Fallout: London

Fallout: Tokyo

Fallout: Paris

Fallout: Beijing

GarrusVakarian3080d ago

A Hiroshima-inspired/themed Fallout would be sick.

Erik73573079d ago (Edited 3079d ago )

No...the American ideologies and themes play a core role in fallout and if it were out of America half the soul to the game is gone. The music, American propaganda, etc.

The whole "America dream" thing is all throughout fallout and you often hear the phrases commie basterds and stuff.

-Foxtrot3079d ago

Thus why I said spin off not main game

Eiffel3079d ago (Edited 3079d ago )

Yeah, Fallout without America is just weird. It's the core theme of the series from culture, propaganda, to the nuclear scare age. Given America's lax gun control as a particular theme I can't imagine many other nations not being culled to extinction by whatever creatures that popped up.

_-EDMIX-_3079d ago

Fallout is still about an international world wide issue though.

Would it not be fun to see how the other side of the world is dealing with the Fallout? Like communist Russia aka USSR? Or China? Or even a Japan that was never hit by a bomb, but still suffered the economical fallout.

The American dream concept is a big part of Fallout, but its not the whole, entire concept of the game. Pretty sure you can spin that into other themes and still make a great game.

I'm hoping Obsidian is seeking another country now lol

Ocsta3079d ago

Yeah, Fallout without the Americana would be Metro 2033, STALKER etc. It sure as hell wouldnt be Fallout.

JokerBoy4223078d ago

What if you played as a Brotherhood of Steel soldier going over to Japan to find age old enemy tech. The Enclave threatens everything the Brotherhood has built with some new weapon and the only way to stop it is with an old message from Japan speaking of a weapon to stop the United States before the war happend. There needs to be some way to bring insight from other countries into the series. A nice spinoff like New Vegas was would be perfect. That or a nice hefty DLC...

So basically have a a post apocalyptic rpg that's not fallout with the fallout name slapped on it for the sake of sales?

-Foxtrot3079d ago (Edited 3079d ago )

It would be Fallout though, you are making out there's nothing outside of the US in Fallouts Universe when their clearly is thanks to the Lore

The themes in Fallout with the American dream is unique to the US but how would Fallouts alternative universe effect other countries with their themes. What if in this world other countries adopted a style similar to the American dream or exaggerated their own versions they were going through in the same time period.

A spin off would just expand the Universe and wouldn't take away anything from the main games. It's like those who think GTA outside of the US is a bad thing when it clearly isn't. They are going to run out of interesting places in the US sometime or later, even the ones they have still to go could end feeling samey compared to the last one so it wouldn't hurt to use these spin offs to give the series a bit of fresh air.

Terminals and dialogue show us that there is a huge world outside of the US filled with their own unique styles. Mr Handy's, Nuka Cola, corporations like Vault tec and Robocop (maybe rival corps) would still be present so it's not like a location change is going to ruin everything.

So you wouldn't want to see something like this at all

https://jmkempster.files.wo...

In a Fallout game.

Then you have things like this

http://fallout.wikia.com/wi...

Which could have had other impacts on life within these locations even after the war,

New creatures, new factions, new rival corporations, new mutations, new vault experiments, maybe new ways to pick locks/hack terminals with it being a new region etc.

If someone said change the main game, then fair enough but a spin off like New Vegas is totally fine.

sullynathan3079d ago

That's basically what Bethesda has been doing ever since they bought Fallout with Fallout 3 & 4

_-EDMIX-_3079d ago

Because New Vegas didn't happen right?

Fox makes a good point. Its not out of the realm of possibility

tanukisuit3079d ago

I'd love to see some other locations, other than in the United States. I want to know what happened to Canada (besides being annexed)!

3079d ago
Ashlen3079d ago

After the lawsuit with Zenimax it's pretty unlikely Obsidian will be making anything with the name Fallout again.

_-EDMIX-_3079d ago

lol, if there is one thing you do well Fox, its making us mad by making us imagine games we want to happen. aka American Horror Story Until Dawn, now this.....bravo.

ChronoJoe3079d ago

Isn't the topic in question here what Obsidian will be making? Not where Bethesda may take the Fallout series.

Not sure what I'd like to see them do, hopefully nothing related to post-apocalyptic environments, as we already have Wasteland and Fallout.

_-EDMIX-_3078d ago

Its merely due to that they worked on Fallout New Vegas.

WikusVanDeMerwe3076d ago

I don't see any of those locations working because the world we live in today is now dumb and highly irrational.

DarkOcelet3079d ago

Or just Prey 2 that looked so damn good but got canned.

ZaWarudo3080d ago

I would absolutely love Obsidian to do another Fallout game now that Bethesda has created a template with Fallout 4.

I just hope they do an urban setting because i do not want to go back to a desert setting. Maybe Chicago, The Enclave is supposedly there.

tanukisuit3079d ago

Perhaps they will do a Fallout 4 continuation, like they did with F3.

On a side note, I'm all for more iso-metric games. Cannot get enough of them!

bigpiece3079d ago

i have an idea.......KOTOR 3!!!!

sullynathan3079d ago

I would like Obsidian to be given the rights to Fallout again so they can make another Fallout title, hopefully this time Bethesda would not give them a short dev time nor will they give them a metascore restriction. Maybe they can make a real Fallout game this time.

I'd like to see a joint development of KOTOR III with Bioware but this is just a dream of mine because of how highly unlikely there will ever be a KOTOR III.

I'm not a fan of Pillars of Eternity, it isn't a good game. Felt too much like they were trying to pander to old crpg fans while making a game worse than those same CRPG's. At least it was far more polished than anything else I've played from them.

Josh Sawyer, Pentiment Director, Comments on Industry Burnout Issues

Josh Sawyer tweets: "I believe burnout has already replaced crunch as the primary hazard of the game industry. Managers are setting teams up to fail and devs are getting ground up as collateral damage. I have suffered from burnout myself. It's no joke. Thanks to @thewritegame and @Eeoor for the talk.

As with crunch, it's likely that managers may acknowledge creating the circumstances leading to burnout but will not take the necessary steps to change them. It's important that devs continue to talk to and support each other and to apply pressure until change is effected."

anast14d ago

Typically burnout comes from abusive management.

Really enjoyed this game. Had no real expectations but loved the presentation and minimalist audio. Very cool attention to detail also with its sense of time and place.
