It's easy to say unless you've walked a mile in their shoes! Yes the past is the past, but you also have to take into consideration the scars that were left behind. This is like saying the Jews should forget the Holocaust or Japanese should forget Heroshima and Nagasaki, those events have made a mark in history. The same thing happened with Africans/African American thus the "N" word and its negative connotation.
