Nintendo Account to connect hardware, PC, and mobile users

Alongside its new mobile game, Miitomo, Nintendo announced Nintendo Account, a synced system that allows players to connect their gameplay and user account across their mobile, console, and PC offerings.

The account system is likely to replace the Nintendo Network ID, and should better utilize Nintendo’s platforms in an iCloud-like service to keep things working together.

Does this mean that digital content is no longer tied to your hardware but to your account instead?

That would certainly be ideal. It would be interesting to see how it works in an ecosystem like Apple's whereby the app purchase history is all via iTunes, not through the publisher.

I honestly despise that Nintendo still haven't done this. Literally every other system in the world is supported with an account that saves and protects your digital purchases. Such as Android, Apple, PS4, X1, everything really.

I've avoided buying any DLC or Digital Content on Nintendo Consoles because it's not saved to an account. So if something happens to my system, I lose all of my games and money. With every other system on the planet you can just buy a new one, log in, and redownload everything.

@ Shadow: "Protects" is a very questionable term, what with the amount of times the various services have suffered hackers.XD

Regardless, though, I do agree that this is something Nintendo needs to do.
If they don't do it with this right off the bat, then it better be a thing within the first three updates to the account system.

It never was since 2013.

The digital content were tied to account and the accounts were tied to hardware.

I can't download any games my older brother downloaded on his account on the Wii U.

Has and always been that way since holiday 2013.

Account were just linked to one system and must be unlink before using it on another.

So no. Digital Content were not tied to hardware.

Same with 3DS it's tied to your SD/Micro SD card.

This is a step in the right direction. Allow gamers to connect purchases, connect saves, and access content from a multitude of devices. I can't carry my 3DS everywhere with me, its just not practical. Just as well I won't always be near a Nintendo console. Allowing me to pruchase and play across a multiude of devices can only help the consumer, and give people a little more faith in a company that some feel has abondoned them as of late.

Much better than having ID's for sure.
