Halo 5’s Ads Lied to You

IGN:

"Hunt the truth and you’ll find misleading marketing

Here’s a strange spoiler warning: Beware, what you’re about to read will completely spoil what does not happen in Halo 5: Guardians — because Microsoft’s ad campaign has been lying to you. Most of the cinematic scenes you’ve seen for Halo 5 tell a very different story than the game itself.

Let’s go back to the beginning."

Eonjay3102d ago

There is a difference in lying and misdirection. Folks use misdirection all the time to keep a plot from being too predictable. This isn't the same as lying.

BitbyDeath3102d ago (Edited 3101d ago )

Doesn't make it any better, I remember when the movie "The Village" showed a trailer that made it look like a horror movie, it turned out

SPOILERS the so called creatures were just people in a costume trying to scare villagers and the entire movie was a boring drama with no horror aspects what so ever END SPOILERS

Never been so mislead by a trailer before.

-Foxtrot3101d ago (Edited 3101d ago )

Remember Iron Man 3

"FINALLY....IRON MAN VS THE BLOODY MANDARIN"

<Finishes Film>

".....why"

:'(

iistuii3101d ago

The village, I remember that movie..There was no way they could have let you know it was people in costumes, that was the surprises plot. In that case why don't they just tell you the ending of every film in case they get accused of lying.

LackTrue4K3101d ago

@iistuii.
He's not talking about the story, it's talking about the movie being showed like a horro movie. And ends up being like a drama movie.

Taero3101d ago

@1.1.2 Then the trailer is at fault for making it appear to be a horror. What if I went to see a fantasy movie as I was shown dragons and magic etc. but instead it turns out that it was just some kid playing a video game and actually it's about his angst getting a girl to go with him to the prom and that's a metaphor for his struggle.

Fine if they sold it as such, but if all I saw were dragons and magic etc. then I'm right to be pissed off if I spend money to see it and oh, it's nothing to do with that.

Unspoken3101d ago

Still haven't seen anything the trailers did not show. Yet another gripe since there is nothing to grasp on. Great single player, flawless Multi-player.

343 is continuing a great campaign, one which most have not even played.

I'll reserve my judgement until I finish the story.

But...

"The greatest hunt in gaming history"

PhucSeeker3101d ago

That's subjective and it's their game so they went full biased and PR, so not really lying. Is there a trailer that goes "The worse hunt" or "The normal hunt" ?

Genuine-User3101d ago (Edited 3101d ago )

I didn't say they were lying. And I actually agree with you.

They mislead us.

Aloy-Boyfriend3101d ago (Edited 3101d ago )

Well this doesn't sound right.

I was getting the vibe of 2 campaigns were you could choose chief and Locke and see the story of Halo 5 in their perspective, and see both settling things out in the end from the trailers, and this doesn't seem what we are getting. It does not only keep people guessing the story but it also misleads them into a conflict that never happens or doesn't come close

MeliMel3101d ago

That what I assumed as well. That I was gonna play both sides.

vikingland13101d ago

Ha IGN calling the kettle black.

MoveTheGlow3101d ago (Edited 3101d ago )

No, I think @Eonjay is correct here. The trailers do not have to illustrate the plot, and misdirection can happen. MGS2 did that to stunning effect and upset quite a few people in the process, but in hindsight, what an interesting move!

Now, if only Halo 5's campaign had a substantial story to fit the misdirection. That's the big difference between it and MGS2's misdirection - it was important and thematic in MGS2. No matter how wacky that story got, it was still one heck of a story.

otherZinc3101d ago (Edited 3101d ago )

LMAO! These Clowns cracking me up. There's such a crusade to smear Halo 5. No other game is scrutinized so heavily.

Shaggy (I mean Ryan McCaffrey) lies each week on his make believe XBOX ONE podcast. I hope he knows no self respective XBOX gamer believes1 word coming from his misleading sarcastic mouth.

My "Review In Progress" of Halo 5:
9.8/10
Fantastic

Just compare some of these reviews, they never go this deep.

Halo 5 Guardians to this point; Magnificent.
Playing on Heroic Campaign Solo.

Haven't experienced Multiplayer
Nor Campaign Co-op

Enjoy the game & all the replay value Halo 5 offers that other games don't. Play Halo 5 yourself. These reviews are a POS.

And:
N4G posts the 3 worst Halo 5 scores at the top of the main page. We lol'ed! Of course.

This will be a great "Achievement" for M$ when the blastoff with the best sales of any game of 2015.

Don't Listen to Ondore's Lies!

DigitalRaptor3101d ago (Edited 3101d ago )

There really are some strong opinions going round about this game's campaign.

First of all, this is definitely not first time Microsoft has misled its Halo fans this generation.

The question I have is, how can anyone consider most of these reviews to be fair and balanced? If we know the story is poor, and that the campaign has level design issues and underwhelming AI, surely the 9s and 10s scores don't make sense. Multiplayer is only one half of what makes each Halo game relevant. Halo stories are pivotal to the experience, and having a poor single player experience cannot possibly be brushed under the carpet simply because of a solid multiplayer experience.

gangsta_red3101d ago (Edited 3101d ago )

But you don't know, all you know and all you are considering are the bad reviews and your usual and very apparent downplaying of anything Xbox or MS related.

Have you played the game Digital? Do you know first hand if the story is poor, what exactly are the level design issues that you encountered and give us examples of the underwhelming AI that you experienced. Or are you just going to believe only the bad reviews?

"...surely the 9s and 10s scores don't make sense."

Of course not, lord forbid that a lot of these reviewers are actually enjoying Halo 5 for the story and the multiplayer.

magiciandude3101d ago

@Digital

This is confusing me quite a bit. How can you tell if the story is poor and level design has issues if you've never played the game for yourself? Or have you? If you're going entirely based on a set of negative reviews then isn't that biased when there are reviews that are actually positive with the single player, you know, the 9s and 10s?

d_g3101d ago (Edited 3101d ago )

How do you know the story is poor or it has level design issues when you only take the bad reviews and leave the good ones

Have you played the game or even finished the camping to say it have poor single player experience ?

"surely the 9s and 10s scores don't make sense."

Only to you DigitalRaptor

stuna13101d ago (Edited 3101d ago )

Bingo! DF has shown the apparent flaws not only in the campaign but also the multiplayer as well. Pop-ins, low textures, stuttering, shadowing issues, multiple frame rates discrepancies while comparing distance from enemies.

I'm in no way suggesting Halo should be labelled or for that matter be scored as a bad game, but come on let's be honest! We've seen games with far less apparent issues get hung from the rafters. It's fine to like/love Halo for what it is, but people need to stop trying to glaze over the issues like they don't exist.

The trade-offs to get a stable and impressive 60 frames a sec are definitely a pretty high price to pay IMO, although there are pretty nice looking levels in the game, there are also bland and unimpressive area's as well. What kills me is how when a review comes out that goes against what Halo lover's believe should be the epitome of perfection, it's a lie straight from the pits of hell.

Knowing what's been shown and what reviewer have seen and shown us, it's not beyong reason to challenge the ideal that Halo is not a perfect game!? But a score of 10 denotes that it is.

Also it seems kind of suspect that these high score reviewer are not even addressing these obvious cons in their reviews, I sure all of them haven't missed seeing them! 1 or 2 maybe, but all of them?

str8duval3101d ago

Just to Let you kno there are sacrifices in EVERY console game to achieve a solid 60fps.weather it's toned down effects, not much on screen, res, closed environments, player count the list goes on. Why df decided to use halo as its first example I'll let u come to your own conclusion.

Azzanation3101d ago (Edited 3101d ago )

@stuna1
Quote *Bingo! DF has shown the apparent flaws not only in the campaign but also the multiplayer as well. Pop-ins, low textures, stuttering, shadowing issues, multiple frame rates discrepancies while comparing distance from enemies.*

There's a difference between flaws and direction. Please know what your talking about before posting nonsense. 343 sacrificed to achieve 60 frames, its there decision to do that. What you have mentioned are not bad coding or glitches. In fact DF stated 343 done an amazing job with making Halo 5 look as good as it does at 60 frames. Something not many companies can claim have done.

Halo 5 sits in the mid 80s score which is considered high for this generation. Its Pros out weight its cons. Not all games need to look photo realistic to be good.

Master Chief Became More Than A Machine In 343's Halo

In Halo 4, 5, and Infinite, Master Chief became a more nuanced, human character.

In spite of the Halo series’ struggles, 343 deserves praise for adding nuance and characterisation to the ever-beating heart of Halo - The Master Chief. Playing through Infinite, it's abundantly clear that the events of the current and previous trilogies have irrevocably changed the iconic hero. He’s no longer the ‘blank slate’ that was previously presented by Bungie. He’s a fatigued, damaged and fallible protagonist, and one who is meandering through currents of grief, while reveling in his newfound agency. Giving the Chief a compelling and meaningful voice was no small feat, and 343 should be proud of that victory.

This article completely misses part of the appeal of the original iteration of character in the original game trilogy. It was the Chief and Cortana vs an entire alien collective. The blank slate Bungie displayed in their games was genius, he was an mysterious hero a wide audience could identify with because he wasn't as clearly defined as most characters.

The books added a lot of lore and backstory but most Halo players just want a fun game with exposition that doesn't get in the way of gameplay, it's why the Cortana level in Halo 3 was derided.

Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty.

BandarHub405d ago

A lot of people give the 343 version of Master Chief a lot of slack.
But Fundamentally he is still the same character, he just has a couple more dialogues. He has not changed in terms of attitude.
"Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty."
And that's what he has done at the end of the day, he did his duty. Watch his partner die, and was ready to destroy the weapon in Halo infinite....he is still the same soilder that everyone remembers

Halo Infintes one was a nice balance between both.

slate91405d ago

Chief and the halo franchise became a joke under 343

Sciurus_vulgaris404d ago

The 343i Master Chief has is based on the books. However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion.

Obscure_Observer404d ago

"However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion."

Which is awesome! I love how Master Chief become more John and less soldier.

GameStop Kicks Off Four Pre-Owned Games For $20 Sale

Daily Video Game writes: "GameStop is running a new pre-owned game sale on over 1000 pre-owned games that offers four pre-owned ($9.99 or less) games for $20 across multiple gaming platforms right now, including PS3 and Xbox 360!"

I mean, the deal is alright… Unfortunately for me the Serious S doesn’t have a disk drive and unfortunately for Gamestop a lot of those games are on or have been on Gamepass/PSNow.

Sgt_Slaughter646d ago

Given the nature of backwards compatibility on new systems, this is a great sale in case you missed out on some gems from last gen.

Mandingo2020646d ago

Most of the games on Xbox are on game pass. The Switch games in this sale are trash c'mon farming simulator that's laughable. The PS4 games should be cheaper. I can't wait for the GameStop going out of business liquidation sale.

neutralgamer1992646d ago

Seriously man I don't get the hate on GS and I guess you want even less options and give more control to the publishers

And you want thousands of people to lose their jobs because you don't like a company. One thing I have noticed is how most who hate on GS haven't shopped at the actual stores in years. Many who hate on GS have also done so listening to others negative stories or experiences. People on YT want clicks and hating on GS is the cool thing

SurgicalMenace645d ago

It's not people's hate that would lose people's jobs, it's the shady business practices of the company. So what you're saying is that because people work there individuals should just support what they don't want to? Sound advice; Hitler too had supporters, employees, and advocates but people go around hating him too. They only hate because of other people's bad stories or experiences; they only spoke bad about him because they wanted attention. It's been decades; lets give his way another go. With your logic anything could be made to sound good.🤷🏾‍♂️

neutralgamer1992645d ago

SurgicalMenace

Seriously you used Hitler as an example to say company has shady practices

You don't have to shop at GS there are many other retailers. I shop there and vast majority of my experiences have been positive and most of the employees are super nice

SurgicalMenace645d ago

Just having some fun, bro.🤣🤣

Mandingo2020645d ago

There are other places to work besides GS. Plus, their benefits are trash so why not work somewhere else?

REDGUM646d ago

And none of those game you speak of you actually own as they are digital not physical & would cost more than $20 as the subscription costs more than that.

Mandingo2020645d ago (Edited 645d ago )

You know you can get game pass ultimate codes for the low on cdkeys or g2a right? You don't need to have a subscription 😂. GS is trash and I'd rather support the mom and pop game store here instead.

BlackTar187645d ago

Why are you people so full of hate? GameStop gives people jobs and provides a physical appearance to see things in the flesh and not just some soulless online experience.

Mandingo2020645d ago

You can get physical at mom and pop game stores plus you can get it online. GS is trash

neutralgamer1992645d ago

Because Mom and Pop shops cost two to three times more for the same product Angie the answer

BlackTar187645d ago (Edited 645d ago )

Mom and pop stores cost more and have even harder time competing against the internet. Also lie to me and tell you have a couple mom and pop stores near you selling games then lie and tell me you shop there.

IanTH645d ago

These sales, while potentially great, really struggle to be valuable given you can't easily parse what games are in stock. You can't just say "only show what is online & what are in my nearby stores". Probably 60-75% of these games in these massive lists are out of stock for shipping, and out of stock locally. It makes it a chore to find anything you'd want, much less 4 of them, much less enough if you wanted to get to a free shipping tier. It's a bummer.

Halo CE over Halo Infinite anyday

Not to mention the impact it had at the time

Flawlessmic716d ago

Halo 3 at the top is correct the only thing id change is swap infinite and halo ce around.

AuraAbjure715d ago

Halo 4 best campaign and multiplayer. Halo 3 best story.

ChubbyBlade715d ago

Are you trying to give people cancer?

AuraAbjure714d ago (Edited 714d ago )

Halo 4 has the hottest Cortana too which explains why the MC is the hardest in that campaign and why H4's multiplayer is the illest. Chief ain't afraid to take on teleporting enemies that can one hit melee kill.
