Silent Hill 4: The Room is the Most Terrifying Game in the Series

"Silent Hill 4: The Room is the best Silent Hill game after the second one and one of the most original horror games ever developed. If SH4 hadn’t been part of the Silent Hill series, it’d probably be considered one of the most unique games in the genre. Part of what makes it so distinct is that it goes against the formula of what we’d come to expect of the series. Many gamers, including myself, were initially turned off by how drastically it had changed. But once the expectations faded, a horrifying experience awaited, unrelenting in its oppressive terror." Peter Tieryas of Tor.com revisits Silent Hill 4: The Room.

I really enjoyed the game, but didn't find it as terrifying as 2/3.

This probably has a lot to do with which one you played first. My first Silent Hill was SH3 and it's also the one I found most terrifying

I think the most popular opinion is that SH2 was the best, and that's probably because most people were introduced to Silent Hill through SH2 (maybe, I dunno. Could also be because the PS1's power wasn't quite enough to make a game like that really shine)

Sillent 2 isn't just scary. It's also one of the most depressing games ever made. That combination makes it the best in the series.

2 was the scariest. I remember my fears were watered down in 3 when I was using the machine gun

I really, really loved the concept of the actual appartment in SH4, and all the things that could happen in it. I still think that was one of the best elements in game horror to date. But the rest of SH4 was pretty forgettable for me

Also, SH4's theme song was great

I don't know. The first Silent Hill game terrified me when I was younger, that Elementary school.

That elementary school still gives me nightmares

Silent Hill 4 is my absolute favourite in the series mainly because of the similarities it had to my old place in Florida, minus the washer room, and I really liked the story. I also really enjoyed the concepts such as the room invasions so players never felt truly safe regardless where they are.
I think the game's main flaws were the lack of monster types, compared to the previous and the auto aim mechanic. The limited inventory space was welcomed but a bit odd due to the "Ghost" bullets.

Still play this game annually to do this day.

I mostly disagree with Downpour's position. Yeah, the game is not amazing by any stretch of the imagination but is much better than the HD Collection and Homecoming. The main issue is the performance, but that was mitigated by the patches, especially on the PS3. Personally, I put it a little behind Origins and The Room.

Having Restless Dreams as a different entry from Silent Hill 2 is also a choice.

Normally, we would not consider it a different game (Restless Dreams), but since it had a very different critical reception and had new content, it was allowed. As for Downpour, I would agree, but since that one is subjective, we let him make his case for the placement.

silent hill 2 is definitely the best one out of those.

for me personally, the whole ritual/cult stuff was always so weird to me in all the other games.

CrimsonWing69261d ago

No disrespect but I put SH2 over 1. 1 is fantastic, but 2 took it all up a level.

We agree, that is why the writer put it in top place!
