Destiny’s story, one year later: The good, the bad, and the Dinklage

Destiny’s newest expansion, The Taken King, is getting strong reviews. But we should remember how much of a disappointment the shooter was to some when it first came out last year.

It had plenty of problems. One of the most common criticisms was its lackluster story. Bungie is the same studio that made the Halo series, so many expected that it’d deliver another cool sci-fi tale with Destiny. But that’s not what debuted. Instead, Destiny’s story was a series of random missions loosely strung together by a robot who wouldn’t explain anything.

But a lot can change in a year.

I still don't think there's a good story here, average at best.

But at least the Taken King developed the cast at the Tower significantly more than just random NPCs that give you stuff. Eris & Clyde at least.

Destiny one year later, please stop posting mutiple articles everyday, time to move on to something else thanks.

GrimDragon3109d ago

A yr later and nothing significantly changed. It's still a broken Grindfest with a handful of interesting characters. Devoid of anything remotely worth sharing with the Internet community and yet this game insist on being everywhere we look much like the kardashians. Smh

My clan mates and I would disagree. I love Destiny. We collectively have thousands of hours logged. Thousands.

Opinions are like assholes though. Everybody has one. Some of them are shitty.

GrimDragon3108d ago

I agree about your opinions comment. Good thing no two assholes are alike.

I didn't get the Taken King. I do have all the other DLC and the original game. The changes that occured when TTK released were pretty significant.

I know that PVP playlists were cut down for me and the others were hidden behind a paywall. The MP maps that disappeared still haven't returned, even for those that paid.

You get a new area if you pay but little else. And Dinklebot was far better. Now it really is bland.

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter331d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell330d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig331d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast331d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g331d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka331d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

I've been thinking about playing through D1 again before it goes away...

CobraKai482d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface481d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog

spoonard479d ago

That's the bummer of 'games as a service'.
