343's O'Connor Says Fans Should Rather Opt For Splitscreen In Next Halo; Isn't Possible In Halo 5

According 343's Frank O'Connor, fans should rather opt for splitscreen to return to the 'next' Halo game. Simply wasn't possible in Halo 5, and 343 would have included the mode, if possible.

I'm sorry, but no... Split-screen in Halo has always been a staple of the series. I expect it with a new entry. They acted as if it was something that needed to be moved on from, which is completely wrong. I think they just didn't want to put the time toward making it work, and tried to play it off as if it were no longer an essential part of the Halo package as a whole.

I instantly lost interest in this game the moment I heard split-screen was taken out. Fans shouldn't have to be vocal about something that has been a staple in the series since its early years... As a major fan of the Halo series in general, it's a damn shame they decided to screw over fans.

VER1ON3112d ago

I don't get why a game is build from the ground up with 60fps in mind. Development on the game began years ago. Back in January of this year, Holmes stated that they were planning to include the mode. A few months later they state its not possible?

FlexLuger3112d ago

@Snookies12

You sure do have a lot to say for a guy who doesnt own an xbox. YOu are usually in PS threads and now your here to be... 'concerned' about the lack of splitscreen....Sure bub....

@VER1ON

"I don't get why a game is build from the ground up with 60fps in mind."

For a faster more responsive multiplayer...I can live with that trade off. If they bring it back without hurting the full screen 60FPS experience then cool. But I wont be happy if halo 6 goes back to 30 FPS. That will kill the online side of things...And I dont think thats wise given that the split-screeners are in the minority here.

VER1ON3112d ago

@flexluger

Sorry couldnt edit anymore, but what I mean was:
Why are they developing a game from the ground up with 60FPS in mind and are planning to include splitscreen in that. They would have known right from the start that 60fps ain't reachable splitscreen.

FlexLuger3112d ago

@VER1ON

True. Maybe they would have needed more time to polish the splitscreen experience, I dunno. I just dont ever want to go back to 30FPS.

TheCommentator3112d ago

@ver1on

Maybe they were expecting to have included streamlined features from DX12? For all we know, MS may have planned for Win10/DX12 to be ready before Halo 5's release. When launches of multiple products are planned years in advance though, things like this can occur. It's just a theory...

3112d ago
Snookies123112d ago

@FlexLuger - When did I ever say I wasn't in PS threads more often? I tend to prefer PlayStation, but that doesn't mean I dislike Xbox. I have some of my best gaming memories playing split-screen Halo with friends back in the original and 360 days... I don't own an Xbox One yet, but I've been saying I'm interested in it. As far as last gen goes, I've owned two 360's. Guess my opinion about a series I really adore is invalid just because I don't own the system that it's on currently, is that what you're getting at?

I'll take 60fps over split screen anytime.

Sucks for those that still use the feature, but the majority of halo players don't.

isa_scout3112d ago

I haven't played splitscreen since Halo 3. It's a cool feature but it hasn't been used by a majority of players in years I'd wager. If a feature isn't being used the developer trims the fat to make other parts of the game better. I'd love to see the data on how many players used splitscreen in Halo 4 and MCC. I'd guess maybe 10%? What it comes down to is people don't like change. They complain if a dev changes to little or to much. These devs are stuck between a rock and a hard place. With a lot of players your damned if you do or damned if you don't. For my money I'll gladly take 60fps over splitscreen. The vocal minority will disagree, but I bet most average gamers won't even realize splitscreen is gone.

ginsunuva3112d ago

Remember last gen when everyone was like "I don't care if PC can do 1080 60fps. We can't even tell the difference."

TheFirstClassic3112d ago

You can have splitscreen at 30 fps and sp at 60. I dont know why people ignore this, mario kart 8 did it.

Immorals3112d ago

Don't think they had enough time to work it with dynamic res in there, too

garrettbobbyferguson3112d ago (Edited 3112d ago )

I'll take both. And (although I dislike the game) even when playing Halo 4 there were constantly people in games (including my friends and I) all playing splitscreen multiplayer. All they would have to do is turn down some of the graphical fidelity. I don't understand why so many console gamers can't live without a game having these unnecessary graphical features while just barely meeting minimum FPS/Resolution standards.

TheFirstClassic3112d ago

Turning down the graphical fidelity for splitscreen is not hard. Similar to how devs create a bunch of different levels of graphics to choose from in pc games. It isn't hard to develop at all.

This has absolutely nothing to do with FPS and what not. It simply comes down to the younger generation of kids now having to have their OWN XBOX ONE and their OWN copy of HALO 5. The older generations are spoiled and need to get over it

Same reason why split screen has been removed from most games.

pinkyxyz3112d ago (Edited 3112d ago )

How in the world is wanting to play a game at a friends house being spoiled? How is it that if me and my 2 friends want to play halo 5 together, the 2 of them will have to buy a new console and a new game just to play in the same room. How is something so basic now considered being spoiled? Maybe its not us and its the gamers who are obsessed with highy fidelility pixels are the ones who are actually being spoiled.

Summons753112d ago (Edited 3112d ago )

People want to be social and hangout with friends? How dare they! EVERYONE NEEDS TO CONFORM TO BEING FACEBOOK AND TWITTER JUNKIES, ORDER EVERYTHING ONLINE AND NEVER LEAVE THEIR HOUSE. Younger kids are the spoiled ones throwing fits because of something that doesn't affect them and demanding a staple of the franchise be taken out because no reason.

spicelicka3112d ago (Edited 3112d ago )

So younger generation having their own xbox doesn't make them spoiled? What the hell kind of logic is that.

NO ONE uses splitscreen to avoid buying the system. Its used so when friends get together PHYSICALLY (I know that's a foreign concept to some people) they can play together. No ones gonna bring their systems and TVs over obviously.

This is why sports games like FIFA, nba 2k, NHL and Madden are so popular. Its a big thing in college when people get together.

Although I'm over the removal of split screen, people need to use their heads to understand why its useful.

garrettbobbyferguson3112d ago

Are you just trolling? The older generation are spoiled for wanting to share? While the younger generation having to have their own consoles aren't spoiled?

Enough of this split screen thing.... Its starting to get old... Get over it

garrettbobbyferguson3112d ago

You know what else is old? Games today having less features than games from a decade ago.

3112d ago
Gazondaily3111d ago

Except Halo 5 has loads of content and free DLC and other features previous Halos didn't have. Why all the moaning?

garrettbobbyferguson3111d ago (Edited 3111d ago )

@Septic

Oh my, it has free DLC? You mean content that could have shipped with the game? That's so nice of them.

@emz99

I've never owned any of the previous Halo titles, but I used to play them regularly with my friends. Even within the past year we played Reach/Halo 4 splitscreen and it's always been a blast.

Gazondaily3111d ago

"Oh my, it has free DLC? You mean content that could have shipped with the game? That's so nice of them. "

And how many games do that now? And they give you forge to build more maps. Ungrateful much?

"I've never owned any of the previous Halo titles,"

Yeah and I've owned them all. I'm in a far better position than you to gauge the value in Halo games.

Just more non core Halo fans moaning.

Frank O'Connor, Halo franchise director, has left Microsoft

O'Connor has been with the Halo franchise since it was with Bungie, and it appears that his time with the series--and Microsoft--is done.

Yet another nail in the Halo franchise coffin. Even Microsoft themselves moved on from the IP after replacing it with Starfield on console boxes.

Lifexline373d ago

This is actually a good thing halo fans have wanted Frank and Bonnie gone from 343 so hopefully things get better with them gone.

Godmars290373d ago

Weren't they brought in to fix what 343 has been doing?

SullysCigar372d ago

Nah, Frank was OG, from back in the days when Halo was good, before 343i came along. What the franchise needs is: 1. a substantial rest, 2. a reboot and 3. a decent pool of the original team that made the magic in the early days.

Only then will they have a chance at having anyone give a crap again. Frank leaving is not a good start on that journey.

InUrFoxHole372d ago

@God
Yeah Frank was but from my understanding that was it for him. Fix that sh!t show and move on

-Mika-373d ago

Microsoft has COD now. They no longer need Halo. 343 Is going through a complete reboot and getting rid of the old and bringing in the new. The Halo franchise is getting a complete reboot to appeal to a new generation of fans. I expect to see a new game by the end of the next gen Xbox.

Vengeance1138373d ago

Doesn't your end statement counter your first? You expect to see a new Halo game by the end of the next gen Xbox that as you say MS doesn't need? I wouldn't expect to ever see another Halo game again if its not needed.

-Mika-373d ago

What I meant to say is that there is no longer any urgency. MS used to release a Halo mainline or spinoff every year or two. They used to make sure there was Halo at the start of every console launch. I no longer see them doing that. Now, they are not going to abandon it because the series still has a lot of value. I expect a new Mainline title by the mid or end of the next Xbox.

derek373d ago

@Mika, Why not both? Managing you most important ip thus far would only be bolstered by add cod to your portfolio.

Lightning77373d ago

Because Halo isn't carrying Xbox to a new gen like they always have in the past like you said. That, Forza and Gears games. The Forza Creative Director left to make a new studio The Coalition took a hiatus to learn Unreal Engine 5 and will return to Gears at some point (rumor is they did return to Gears but still years away from release)

MS Trifecta is getting old and tired I mean that from a studio point of view of the only studios carrying the Xbox every gen. Once MS employed new studios to help develop games for the console, old studio heads and leads are all going there sesperate ways.

It's what happens when you have the same 4 or 5 studios for years on end. Burn out.

BehindTheRows373d ago

CoD is remaining multiplatform. Besides, you don’t abandon a high profile property just because of an impending acquisition. That’s…. not how business works. At all.

Halo just needs a new shot in the arm to get it going again.

If you know who this person is you would agree that he should have left the studio after Halo 5

Fallout of a failed game. Your TGA player's choice goty 87 meta lol. Idgaf. Dreams was great yet it failed and the director left. That's what happens. Halo was average from the jump yet showered with praise. Now many hate the game. Funny.

porkChop373d ago

The gameplay, mechanics, and feel of Halo Infinite are top notch. That's why everyone praised it initially. It was with the expectation that 343 would keep a steady stream of content and updates coming to keep the game alive, which 343 failed miserably at.

Master Chief Became More Than A Machine In 343's Halo

In Halo 4, 5, and Infinite, Master Chief became a more nuanced, human character.

In spite of the Halo series’ struggles, 343 deserves praise for adding nuance and characterisation to the ever-beating heart of Halo - The Master Chief. Playing through Infinite, it's abundantly clear that the events of the current and previous trilogies have irrevocably changed the iconic hero. He’s no longer the ‘blank slate’ that was previously presented by Bungie. He’s a fatigued, damaged and fallible protagonist, and one who is meandering through currents of grief, while reveling in his newfound agency. Giving the Chief a compelling and meaningful voice was no small feat, and 343 should be proud of that victory.

This article completely misses part of the appeal of the original iteration of character in the original game trilogy. It was the Chief and Cortana vs an entire alien collective. The blank slate Bungie displayed in their games was genius, he was an mysterious hero a wide audience could identify with because he wasn't as clearly defined as most characters.

The books added a lot of lore and backstory but most Halo players just want a fun game with exposition that doesn't get in the way of gameplay, it's why the Cortana level in Halo 3 was derided.

Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty.

BandarHub406d ago

A lot of people give the 343 version of Master Chief a lot of slack.
But Fundamentally he is still the same character, he just has a couple more dialogues. He has not changed in terms of attitude.
"Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty."
And that's what he has done at the end of the day, he did his duty. Watch his partner die, and was ready to destroy the weapon in Halo infinite....he is still the same soilder that everyone remembers

Halo Infintes one was a nice balance between both.

slate91406d ago

Chief and the halo franchise became a joke under 343

Sciurus_vulgaris406d ago

The 343i Master Chief has is based on the books. However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion.

Obscure_Observer406d ago

"However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion."

Which is awesome! I love how Master Chief become more John and less soldier.

I mean, the deal is alright… Unfortunately for me the Serious S doesn’t have a disk drive and unfortunately for Gamestop a lot of those games are on or have been on Gamepass/PSNow.

Sgt_Slaughter647d ago

Given the nature of backwards compatibility on new systems, this is a great sale in case you missed out on some gems from last gen.

Mandingo2020647d ago

Most of the games on Xbox are on game pass. The Switch games in this sale are trash c'mon farming simulator that's laughable. The PS4 games should be cheaper. I can't wait for the GameStop going out of business liquidation sale.

neutralgamer1992647d ago

Seriously man I don't get the hate on GS and I guess you want even less options and give more control to the publishers

And you want thousands of people to lose their jobs because you don't like a company. One thing I have noticed is how most who hate on GS haven't shopped at the actual stores in years. Many who hate on GS have also done so listening to others negative stories or experiences. People on YT want clicks and hating on GS is the cool thing

SurgicalMenace647d ago

It's not people's hate that would lose people's jobs, it's the shady business practices of the company. So what you're saying is that because people work there individuals should just support what they don't want to? Sound advice; Hitler too had supporters, employees, and advocates but people go around hating him too. They only hate because of other people's bad stories or experiences; they only spoke bad about him because they wanted attention. It's been decades; lets give his way another go. With your logic anything could be made to sound good.🤷🏾‍♂️

neutralgamer1992646d ago

SurgicalMenace

Seriously you used Hitler as an example to say company has shady practices

You don't have to shop at GS there are many other retailers. I shop there and vast majority of my experiences have been positive and most of the employees are super nice

SurgicalMenace646d ago

And none of those game you speak of you actually own as they are digital not physical & would cost more than $20 as the subscription costs more than that.

Mandingo2020646d ago (Edited 646d ago )

You know you can get game pass ultimate codes for the low on cdkeys or g2a right? You don't need to have a subscription 😂. GS is trash and I'd rather support the mom and pop game store here instead.

BlackTar187647d ago

Why are you people so full of hate? GameStop gives people jobs and provides a physical appearance to see things in the flesh and not just some soulless online experience.

Mandingo2020646d ago

You can get physical at mom and pop game stores plus you can get it online. GS is trash

neutralgamer1992646d ago

Because Mom and Pop shops cost two to three times more for the same product Angie the answer

BlackTar187646d ago (Edited 646d ago )

Mom and pop stores cost more and have even harder time competing against the internet. Also lie to me and tell you have a couple mom and pop stores near you selling games then lie and tell me you shop there.

IanTH647d ago

These sales, while potentially great, really struggle to be valuable given you can't easily parse what games are in stock. You can't just say "only show what is online & what are in my nearby stores". Probably 60-75% of these games in these massive lists are out of stock for shipping, and out of stock locally. It makes it a chore to find anything you'd want, much less 4 of them, much less enough if you wanted to get to a free shipping tier. It's a bummer.
