ughh... I only buy retail discs to avoid huge downloads. I don't know why I bother anymore because you get stuck downloading huge patches anyway.

Maybe time to go all digital...

OB1Biker3115d ago (Edited 3115d ago )

Its still a lot faster and easier to delete a game you dont play for a while and to reinstall it when you fancy playing it. Also its great to keep it on shelf for a nice collection friends can borrow and you can even sell or trade it in.
Plus digital should be a lot more cheaper than retail disc but actually retail games become cheaper a lot faster.
All in all I dont see the interest for digital but everyone their own preference.

uth113115d ago

Well I have too much physical media in the house as it is, and I have kids, so when I go to hunt down the disc, it's never in the right case and I end up sorting out all the games.

Digital is just more convenient overall

_-EDMIX-_3115d ago

@uth11- um yea. Lets see how great that sounds when a situation like P.T rolls along. How do you know many of those games you buy digital if the publisher won't go under and remove that support? Once that happens, all it takes is one failed HDD and gone for good.

I only buy digital if its the only way to get it or I get it free or at a huge discount and its not a huge game.

MOST times I will get physical and situations like P.T very much solidify that I will never get any major game upon release as digital.

I'd rather have it physical and lost in my house, then digital and removed FOREVER!

WalterWJR3115d ago

Sony needs to lock this down and give devs a maximumum data allowance. Patches like this put off casuals from gaming at all.

CyrusRiffs3115d ago

@WalterWJR They already do, and patches overwrite data, so meh.

Look at it this way: XB1 makes you download a full chunk if they change a bit of data in that chunk, so the patches can be as big as the the whole game even if they just change 1 small text file in each chunk. PS4 does not. So at least everything you're getting is needed.

dantesparda3115d ago

They fix the frame rate?

@Cyrus

That's not true is it?

nitus103115d ago

I fully agree with all the points you brought up and of course everyone has their own preferences.

@uth11

Nothing wrong with having physical media, however as the adult gamer in the house it really is your responsibility to make sure your kids know how to handle and manage the physical media.

Digital is fine if you don't mind the download which as we have seen may also have ridiculously large patch sizes as well which is IMHO poor programming, although DLC sizes are acceptable since they are add-on's.

Note: When I say "poor programming" I mean that the overall design was done without or with little consideration for maintenance.

alfcrippinjr3115d ago

digital should be a lot more cheaper than retail disc

your correct on this one it should be a lot cheaper
then buying retails disc

digital downloading is the biggest scam going.

your better of buying the disc over the digital versions.

only time you buy digital is if it dead cheap.

muzikjunkie803114d ago

CyrusRiffs

Look at it this way: XB1 makes you download a full chunk if they change a bit of data in that chunk, so the patches can be as big as the the whole game even if they just change 1 small text file in each chunk. PS4 does not. So at least everything you're getting is needed.

stop spreading BS that simply is not true it does exactly the same on both consoles and the patches are never the same size as the full game, its beyond me why people like you spread misinformation and pass it of as fact.

CyrusRiffs3114d ago

@dantesparda It's 100% true unfortunately. Unless they changed something since I found that out, which is unlikely. I'm not sure why though.

badz1493114d ago

10 freakin GB? whoaa...calm the f down satan! What is this? Xbone?

RedDevils3114d ago (Edited 3114d ago )

@_-EDMIX-_ "takes is one failed HDD and gone for good" haha you must be one of those idiot doesn't even know what you're on about, you can always get it back without costing a single cent, but with disc broke say good bye.

"How do you know many of those games you buy digital if the publisher won't go under and remove that support?" You sound just like those guys in the PS1/PS2/PS3 days when Sony introduce a new medium which is = to new options, but no you think it gonna fail hard.

Anyway other than pricing, I don't see anything wrong with digital.

Skankinruby3115d ago

I had every intention of going all digital this gen but I'm a thrifty shopper and prices for games dont drop nearly as much digitally as the physical ones do, not sure why

nitus103115d ago

It's called greed.

With physical games there is a thriving second hand market and unlike CD's and DVD's Bluray disks (BD) are scratch resistant although it is possible to damage the top printed surface.

If a game re-seller gets too many of a particular game they have no choice but to reduce the price which in turn leads to a reduction in price of the new game. Depending on a game's popularity and second hand sales, price reduction can happen slowly or quite fast.

An all digital game is not under that much market pressure so it tends to keep it's original price for longer. Digital games only drop in price when there is reduced demand for that game and unlike a physical game which requires a retailer to provide physical space the only space a digital game requires is bytes on a server.

kotaku773115d ago

That's a totally fair point you made, idk why you got so many disagrees.
In my opinion the day this goes all digital will be the day I'll go only retro.
By the way this game is awesome.
Peace V

uth113115d ago

My opinion is often outside the mainstream, so I'm used to disagrees. But in this case it is lopsided because looks like most people are also annoyed by the file size.. go figure!

creeping judas3114d ago

uth11 maybe your kids got online and started disagreeing with you?

deadpoolio3163115d ago

Did you just now like this week get a PS4 or X1? You do know that ALL retail games for both consoles are installing the FULL game right, so IF its a 50gb download its a 50gb install from the disc as well

uth113115d ago (Edited 3115d ago )

I know, but I don't have the greatest internet speeds, so if a game is a 50gb dl, I buy the disc retail.

So when I buy a disc, and end up downloading 10gb, 15gb in patches, it kinda defeats my purpose for going physical in the first place

Worse this was a game that amazed everyone by not having a day one patch, and seemed relatively bug free, now suddenly it needs a huge patch for a handful of trophy and misc fixes?

nitus103115d ago (Edited 3115d ago )

You are stating the obvious here, however it normally is much faster to install a 50GB game from disk at approximately 27MB/sec than from the internet.

When considering installation speed you also have to consider the write speed of the hard disk and considering most PS4's and XB1's have 5400rpm disks write speed is normally in the 22 MB/sec range the maximum download and install speed is limited to the performance of the hard disk.

Now lets do some simple arithmetic. Say we are installing 50GB and the max write speed of the hard disk is approx 22MB/s then the total install is going to take around 38 minutes which is what you could expect from a Bluray install.

Of course a better performance disk will allow faster installs and better overall performance such as an 7200rpm disk or if you have the money a Solid State Disk.

Next we consider an internet install. This is by far much more difficult since internet performance varies enormously. Great if you have a connection that is better then 22MB/s but not so good if your connection is 1MB/s or less and that is assuming you can get consistent speeds. So a 1MB/s internet speed for a 50GB download could take as much as 14 hours.

If you want to apply a 10GB patch then this is normally done via the internet and this is why some people are not that happy since a 1MB/s internet speed for a 10GB download would take approximately 3 hours and possibly impact their cap if they have one.

@uth11

Well said.

showtimefolks3115d ago

If publishers want us to go digital than lower the price atleast $10. Reason being simple retail stores are not taking their cuts so why do consumers still pay the same for digital

uth113115d ago

the reason is they don't want to piss off the physical retailers by underselling them digitally. That's the reason Ubisoft gave at least and it makes sense. They also said they expect that to change in time.

But yeah, they should be cheaper due to reduced distribution costs, and no trade-in value.

Orionsangel3115d ago (Edited 3115d ago )

I went all digital two years ago and never looked back.

someOnecalled3115d ago

Welcome to the new world of console where mostly everything people said they wouldn't do or is bad is now good. Ain't these console convenient and plug and play like other rave about. Good thing it work day one or people without internet would be stuck with an unplayable game

DragonDDark3115d ago

Did they hide something in there? 😞

Kal-V33115d ago

Usually, large patches like this that arent said to be actual content are just replacing assets and audio that are already in the game with and updated set of those with the fixes. Sometimes you can't just patch things directly.

neoandrew3115d ago

You can and it is called delta patch, but it has it downsides.

MRMagoo1233115d ago

I was thinking maybe something special for Halloween was added perhaps because ppl are saying it increases the game size by 10 gigs pretty much , so that would mean more content of some sort.

joaovictorop3115d ago (Edited 3115d ago )

10 Gigas to improve Stability and bug fixes in a game that already runs buttery smooth?! Strange.

DragonDDark3115d ago

Ikr? Imma play it again (•`~'•)

Neonridr3115d ago (Edited 3115d ago )

strange.. that can't simply be stability improvements..

although inverted Y axis, yes please.

tjg593115d ago

I thought the game ran fine already

Sy_Wolf3115d ago

It sat in the low 20s most of the time, that's unacceptable.

Doesn't look any different to the ps4 version. Hope it's not another lazy Sony remaster a.k.a remake.

Andy_Dee64d ago (Edited 64d ago )

Wrong, they even showed it on the last State of Play and I just played it the month before since I wanted to go back to it.

It does look better and more cleaned up, it's not a remake at least what they said. They said remaster so this article is wrong from the info I've heard.

Until Dawn is getting remastered to coincide with the live-action movie.

https://www.polygon.com/240...

https://youtu.be/pnbxcNmUcQ...

https://blog.playstation.co...

So not a Lazy remake and yes it looks better! :)

CrimsonWing6964d ago

It’s pretty different looking.

Neonridr64d ago

I'm sure it's a fair upgrade seeing as it's UE5 now. That being said, the original was not ugly by any stretch and I can't fully understand the need to remake this other than a cash grab to coincide with the movie that is coming eventually.

Crows9064d ago

Please point to me to a lazy remake?

A good game, had some fps troubles on ps4. So hopefully thats ironed out with some better looking graphics.

solideagle64d ago

I think Sony should rename PlayStation to RemakeStation. I am a Playstation fan but this is getting ridiculous. I think this is the weakest gen software-wise compared to all other gen.

PS2 > PS3 > PS1 > PS4 > PS5

Battlestar2364d ago

Agreed. Sony has released only remasters/remakes of games and noting new. MS has released so many new games i don't have the time to name the all.

solideagle64d ago

I have never owned or cared about Xbox, so I don't have any opinion about that. if you say that MS has released then I believe you I guess

Terry_B64d ago

Ratchet & Clank, Spider-Man 2, Gran Turismo 7, Helldivers 2 , Horizon Forbidden West to name a couple.

And what Microsoft released in the last couple of years was way beyond the league of those listed games.

MrNinosan64d ago

Ratchet & Clank, Returnal, Spider-Man 2, Gran Turismo 7, Helldivers 2, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West to mention a few of the good ones.
Then everything on PSVR2.
Then we have the bad ones, like Destruction AllStars and medium ones like Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

On top of that, there are lots of third party games.

Compare that to MS.
Redfall, MS Flight Simulator, Forza Horizon 5, Forza Motorsport, Starfield, HiFi Rush. Did I miss anything?

Now lets compare the games, and see which console had the best start this generation.

solideagle64d ago

I think Sony should have abandoned the PS4. we have not seen true PS5 potential yet. where are those games that would load Assets from SSD where the character is looking <-- Mark Cerny

I hope all new games from Sony Studios are PS5 only from now...

CrimsonWing6964d ago

What’s worse is this gen is almost over, if you can believe it.

staticall64d ago

@solideagle
I completely agree with you. At first it was like «Hey, so cool, i've never played this game and it's getting a remake, means it'll be much better!» but now it's «Come on, i was just playing that, it still looks and plays just fine». I want to play new games, try new experiences, hear new stories from new characters. It's like gaming companies have hired George Lucas as a consultant or something.

@Battlestar23
> MS has released so many new games i don't have the time to name the all
Suuuuuuuure, dude. Come on, be real.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro64d ago

Looks like the PS4 version. Lol, that'd be 70 bucks.

Machina64d ago

Cheap and quick way to fill in the release calendar in-between major new games - that's why pretty much all the major publishers have been doing it.

This is a fun game. But remaking this is lazy. A cheap remaster while a new game is being developed would have had more value for the customer.

EvertonFC79d ago

Yeah I here ya, I'm on the fence tbh as I think the haptics could be really cool but it seems a little early.
I guess it's to tie in with the movie release so makes sense somewhat.

outsider162479d ago

This over Killzone remake? Or Socom 2 remake?

monkey60279d ago

Less effort and there's a movie release to tie into.
I am very tired of all these remakes and remasters of games from recent years. If they're going to remake anything it should be a lot older.

Chevalier79d ago

If the Resistance trilogy on PS3 was being remade I would buy that day 1. Really hope the franchise returns along with Killzone

JEECE79d ago

Socom 2 remake wouldn't be worth the effort. I don't know the exact number it finally sold, but from looking at articles from a few years after launch, it looks to have gotten in the ballpark of 3 million. It has been twenty years now so many of those people probably don't even play games anymore, and the people who play multiplayer games now would start whining about Socom about three weeks after launch about how "there isn't enough content" and "they just sent it out to die." Granted, it would probably develop a small but dedicated player base from the old crowd who want a stable, solid multiplayer game instead of a live service, but that isn't a lucrative proposition for Sony.

EvertonFC79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

It was the same when millions of gamers asked for a sly remake then when the game came out it sold like 10,000 copies.
Sometimes we think we want the old games then in reality nobody ever buys it 😂🤣

outsider162479d ago

You have a point though. I guess we want it because of nostalgia. Was hoping we'd get a socom with a good single player and ofcourse multiplayer, maybe it'll sell well.
