Supermassive: Until Dawn Sales “Surpassed Expectations,” Already Talking Internally About a Sequel

Debuting in 7th in the United States for all of August 2015, and finishing in 2nd in the UK during its launch week, PlayStation 4 exclusive Until Dawn has surpassed sales expectations, Executive Producer Pete Samuels told PSLS in an exclusive interview:

American Horror hasn't been the same since the First season and third season. It's not even scary anymore more like a comedy you ask me. Supermassive should just do it the way they did the first game.

Great news for a great IP.

PS4 has been killing it with new IP this gen. Most of them have found successes and are getting sequels. Nintendo struck oil with Splatoon.

I agree it would be hard to explain why some of the characters are alive for a sequel and would open a rift in the space-time continuum or something.

Better to start with a new cast

However they could try subgenres. Same cast, maybe same characters but different story

Sci-Fi Horror like Alien, Event Horizon, The Thing

Holiday Horror like Halloween, Black Christmas,

Comedy Horror like Shaun of the Dead, Evil Dead II, Scary Movie

and so on.

Final Destination game with these mechanics would be a great idea. Any of you guys remember Final Destination 3 Choose Your Fate DVD? It was the only interactive DVD that allow you to choose the characters fate, where its possible to keep them alive. This is what I am talking about:

The Risk Has Been Rewarded.

I can't believe how Supermassive is run by uber creative developers. They can tackle any genre of games. They know what they want and know how to do it creatively.
Until dawn has catapulted them near Naughty Dog's level of creativity when it comes to gameplay with storytelling ideas.

One of the writers happens to be a gamer and was able to translate his horror writing experience to the gameplay.

A true successful marriage of videogames and Hollywood.

Well at least you got one agree. I was so dissapointed with my second play through.
I made very different choices which could of made the story go in all sorts of directions but often the outcome was the same. Missed opportunity in my opinion.
Wish I'd only played once because the illusion of decisions nattering made it an amazing game.

It reminded me of the TellTale The Walking Dead games. The game is basically on rails with very little deviation depending on your choices. I tried playing through it immediately after my first play through since I enjoyed it so much and wanted to see what doing the opposite would be like. It was very disappointing to say the least especially after how they hyped the Butterfly Effect and all the ways the story can play out.

My faith in this industry is renewed/restored when a game widely referred to as Niché does well commercially. I feel like the same old annual releases and endless sequels are suffocating the medium.

Supermassive Games lept from obscurity with Until Dawn. A Sequel sounds like a good plan ..Until Dawn 2 featuring a new lead star , or possibly an all star cast stranded in/on a new location. Perhaps Sony could time the release for Halloween next time for added affect. Well I'm Happy ;)

This game was such a great ride! I thoroughly enjoyed it, looking forward to revisiting for different outcomes. But a sequel/series? I don't know how'd they pull that off and it be as gripping as the first. However, as well as UD was scripted, I'm sure they'll pull something off worth while.

Sony missed the opportunity to advertise this game. I think the success is because people are able to watch streamer play and decided for themselves me included.

This is a highly experimental game in its content and its execution but man did this game succeeded in flying colors with the developers, publishers, let's players and the gaming public.

@Frinker - you forgot to include Infamous SS (metascore 80} and Disgaea 5 (metascore 83.) The number of triple A exclusives for both the PS4 and the X1 for the first 2 years is much lower than last generation because so many titles have been cross generational. MS, Sony and 3rd party developers have just started, for the most part, to release games that can't be played on the PS3 and the X360 (can't really blame them with more than 160 million consoles sold between them.) They moved on from the PS2 and Xbox more quickly.

I think the advertising alone sold this game. Plus, with how well it sold, there for sure going to be a sequel, and I'm for sure into playing it. I just wonder the route they'll take. Will they go back to the original location? Will it be a new location and cast, different threats and so on? I'm down to playing anything they bring out.
