Are you sure this isn't taken from ZSnes?

Haha just kidding folks, although I would have enjoyed a graphical overhaul similar to FF IV.

But I will get this anyway... since Square is a bully and they own me... and they know it.

*sigh*

Smacktard5742d ago

Oh god, I was going to make the ZSNES comment, but you beat me to it!

I am considering picking it up, but I also really don't want to, because Squeenix has done almost nothing new in the past few years, and makes their money by crapping out Final Fantasy spin-offs, remakes, and ports, and that is awful. They could release CT on Virtual Console easily, if they actually wanted to cater to their fans. But I guess everything comes down to nickels and dimes...

PistolPumptMonk5742d ago

Yep you got it buddy, Squeenix is in it for the money. Think about how much money they have made of of squareSOFT's creations.

And I would also like to remind you of the first big Squeenix game. Thats right.... I'm going to say it..... Final freakin Fantasy X-2.

Ouch.

PS360WII5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

Please Square Enix isn't even going buck wild on ports like they did during their PS1 era. Square Enix is doing plenty good. Plus zsnes doesn't even play Chrono Trigger that well so glad they are making a good version of this game that'll play like the SNES original

PistolPumptMonk5741d ago

Not going wild?

Final Fantasy I and II for GBA.
Final Fantasy I and II for PSP.
Final Fantasy IV for GBA.
Final Fantasy V for GBA.
Final Fantasy VI for GBA.
Final Fantasy III for DS.
Final Fantasy IV for DS.
Valkyrie Profile for PSP.
Final Fantasy Tactics for PSP.
Star Ocean: First Departure for PSP.
Star Ocean: Second Evolution for PSP.
Chrono Trigger for DS.

Thats not even mentioning the HUGE amount of spinoffs over the past few years. Just to name a few:

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobos Dungeon
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and A2.
Final Fantasy X-2.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

If thats not going wild with ports and spinoffs, then please inform me, what is?

PS360WII5741d ago (Edited 5741d ago )

So your going all the way back to last gen too? Here I though you just said this generation? If you count 2 gens in a row then yes that'll add up to more than 1 generation.

Continuing stories of spin offs aren't bad seeing that they are like main franchises now I fail to see the bad thing for more new games (yes new is the key word not port)

Squaresoft released FFIV-VI along with Chrono Trigger separate then after that they rereleased it all again in one pack. Plus don't even count FFIII and IV on DS those are full remakes US and Europe didn't even get III when it was orginally released and IV has so much new stuff in it it's like a playing a new game.

PistolPumptMonk5741d ago (Edited 5741d ago )

Ok first of all, if you look at my previous comment, I said Sqeenix. I did not specify a time period, I am specifically referring to the difference between Squeenix and Squaresoft.

And don't tell me not to count certain games like FF IV on ds. If I'm not mistaken the game is titled.. ummm Final Fantasy IV??? Just like the original Super Nintendo game? Sounds like a remake to me. Sure there is new content but that IS NOT THE POINT. The point is its easy money and they are loving and taking advantage of it.

I also never said ANY of those remakes/ports/spinoffs are bad. In fact I own quite a few of them and enjoy them. HOWEVER, I still do not salute Squeenix for what they are doing, it is taking advantage of consumers who love their games and will shell out the money for graphical upgrades or the chance to play a game on a different system.

Also notice, I'm not saying this is a dumb marketing strategy, I just don't like it.

But PLEASE don't try to tell me they aren't trying to make some money off of ports/spinoffs/remakes. Name 3 companies that have re-made more games in the past 8 years than Sqeenix. Notice SQUARE-ENIX, not SQUARESOFT.

And what? Squaresoft releases some FF games in packages on the PS1 and that can even compare to what Sqeenix is doing now? Are you kidding me? Have you EVER seen a direct sequel to a FF before Squeenix?? Hmm I believe X-2 was the first, and that game was trash.

And yes SOME of the spinoffs are ok but come on, you cannot tell me Dirge of Cerberus lived up to the legacy of FF VII and honestly I did not enjoy Crisis Core enough to beat it all the way (I own it).

I'm not saying all of Squares games (regardless of whether they are completely new or not) are bad, I'm just saying Squaresoft was more about quality, less about quantity.

PS360WII5741d ago (Edited 5741d ago )

Eh I still think the new Square Enix and most of it's porting tactics stem from Squaresoft. FFIV is not a quick cash I'm sorry no you cannot win that argument in a life time.

Squaresoft was always about making people remember what they once did Enix always moved on. Square Enix wants to do both but hey lets make sure they really remember. Though Square Enix has been moving new titles a lot more then porting. Yes they still are porting but remaking and spin offs are much more appreciated then ports. I do hear you on Crisis Core though what was that gameplay ><

I as well like Square Enix more than one should and if you really are in the same boat as me then you'd know about all the new continuations they are making and the new IPs they are doing as well as the remakes.

PistolPumptMonk5741d ago (Edited 5741d ago )

Yeah well I am definitely still following SE, Last Remnant looks like it could be cool and I will of course be getting FF XIII. I think I'll probably check out the two Star Oceans on PSP as well.

The reason I am a little bitter about what SE has done as of late (besides FF XIII going multi-plat) is because I really miss games like FF VI, FF VII, and FF X, my personal favorites. I felt like XII was good but not nearly as good as those and nothing SE has done since has really impressed me as much as those games of old.

I just imagine a world where we see COMPLETELY NEW final fantasy games on the ds, made like FF VI and FF VII, not spin offs of any kind, but a continuation of the series only on handhelds. Same goes for PSP. Just imagine a whole new franchise, Final Fantasy DS, Final Fantasy DS II, Final Fantasy PSP 1, Final Fantasy PSP2, all with gameplay similar to the FF's of old, yet something completely new. Kind of like how VIII and IX felt like new games but stayed true to the series.

I just feel like they are drifting from their roots. I miss classic RPG goodness dangit! And handheld systems are so perfect for it. I own FF III and FF IV on the ds, and while they are great games, they feel kind of old... just story and all that, I want the old that was felt in VI - X, that would be amazing.

Yes I know, I'm a dreamer.

Smacktard5741d ago

Great list, PistolPumptMonk.

Also, Chrono Trigger runs, like, perfectly on ZSNES, PS360Wii. I don't knowwhat you're talking about.

Greeeaaat... They added hp/mp bars right below chars.

kewlkat0075741d ago

..but that's just me.

People that never got to play this game will get a chance.

Man, I have to pick it up.

PistolPumptMonk5741d ago

EXACTLY. ff x was the last great one. Was that Squaresoft or SE...??

Hmmm. Yeah. SE didn't touch that one. Thats what I thought.

It's already been said that they weren't motivated to do anything with the series unless the gang was back together, not really for any legal reasons.

FinalFantasyFanatic303d ago

I'm honestly happy with the Steam port of the game.

Square isn’t what it used to be.

CrimsonWing69421d ago

It’s true.

Squaresoft used to be like the equivalent of Naughty Dog back in the day. When you heard Squaresoft was making a game you knew it’d be a banger.

god I miss those days.

porkChop421d ago

Yeah they used to be the best in the industry. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is the worst decision they ever made. While they had previously talked about merging with Enix, that film flopping so hard left them with no other option.

CrimsonWing69420d ago

@porkChop

My understanding is that merger was happening before the film and the flop of the film freaked them out because they thought Enix would call it off.

I personally wish Square Pictures was a success. I thought the Matrix shirt they did was cool and they were pushing computer animation into a more mature realm.

Unfortunately, Spirits Within noted many and wasn’t the FF movie a lot of fans wanted. I thought it was decent, but something like Advent Children should’ve been the direction they went.

Ronmaest415d ago

To me, Naughty Dog is now Naughtycucks.p after that god awful story in LoU 2.

It was people like Yasumi Matsuno that held it for me, at Squaresoft. The company thought them too radical and ran them out. And now they yearn for people like that. They’re short sighted and pathetic.

GoodGuy09421d ago

Square ruined pretty much every great old franchise they've had.

franwex421d ago

Kinda misleading title, even from reading the article itself.

The staff and management couldn’t come to an agreement and the team moved on. Part of the team went to creat ff11 and the rest to Monolith software. Ideas for this game were implemented in some form to mobile games-later on. Which make sense as early 2000s mobile phones were not as powerful.

Top 20 Soundtracks From the 16-Bit Era

In the 16-bit era, game devs and composers could finally change the type of tones used in the music, simulating a wider array of instruments and creating a whole lot of great soundtracks in the process.

It wasn’t easy picking out the best of the best because there were so many great ones. Even middle-of-the-road soundtracks seemed to deserve a bump if the game was just that damn good, and so many from that era are that damn good!

Here's the Ghetto Gamer list of top 20 soundtracks from the 16-bit era.
