Xbox 360 System update now available (no new features)

A few minutes ago, the team released a system update for the Xbox 360 over Xbox LIVE. Sometime over the next few hours when you sign in to Xbox LIVE you'll recieve a prompt to accept this mandatory update. This update contains code to 'prepare for future growth of the service.' There are no other changes or enhancements in this update…in other words no new features.

To be clear: This is not the new Xbox experience update. That will come in the Fall.

Takes 2 seconds on the 360. You don't have to download and install them like on the PS3.

They actually fixed that little problem. Now when we download firmware updates for PS3, they automatically install and then reset the system without any manual assistance. No more "Press PS Button over and over for no reason." We also get the option of having the system automatically turn off once the update's done.

That doesn't even make any sense, are you talking from a update working behind the scenes perspective? seemingly not doing anything because you can't see what its doing?. XBL has always recieved maintenance or preparation updates, you're just tracking 360 news more than ever now as most PS3 fans are doing the same.

The New Xbox Experience (NXE) is going to be epic, new features, new gameplay types (Primetime is the *most* under-discussed element of NXE) and a whole new UI.

I'm very excited for NXE, but I damn well know it wont come until the Fall. Its the beginning of August FFS...

Dont worry, N4G does all it can to spread FUD about MS... nothing changes around here.

This is hardly a new thing - they put out 'prep' updates when they have chunks of a patch ready to reduce the strain on the 'real' patch. It helps us all have a better experience when the real dude drops.

This is Microsoft slowly releasing the update. It just make things work better. Nothing worse then releasing the full update, and finding out there is a problem with the code.

but their updates do take along time, and i notice the 360 updates do take a few seconds or minutes. and im not hating on ps3 im just stating when i used my bro's ps3 for some firmware update i would rather play outdated since it would take along time to download.... then to install it. and also i never actually thought the idea of releasing lil updates for the big one to come.

@chrisnick - uhh... 2.41 which sole purpose was to fix the mess of 2.40... practically every update comes with an update to fix the previous update...

anyways... this is good what microsoft is doing... they release the update (disabled).. test it in a control environment with beta testers... ensure that all pieces are ok... which also enable developers to have access to the updates in a real xbox live environment.... and when everything seem to work properly... pull the switch and the risk of having a 2.40 situation is minimum.

They have enough experience by now with updates to be cautious of doing a massive one which might cause problems for consoles. I think they would should start giving us in installments over the period leading to the final update in fall. This way it will be easier to debug and we'll start getting new features to test..

recently when i pop in the game orange box or gears i always have to update the game. and i know if i havent played in months i should but everyday? i know the devs dont release updates on a daily manner. and now i was thinking im going to start updating my freaking xbox like i do with the games. thats something with how the cache of the console

game title updates are redownloaded if the cache gets cleared manually or they get bumped off due to not being played for a length of time i believe

clearing the console cache keeps the console running smoother

another thing is soemtimes new updates don't stick and thats why you egt an update every tiem you play but if you clear the cache it will only grab the newest update and you'll be good to go

The fans of MSFT's competition help heat it up beyond the point curious 360 fans would have that have not yet fired up their 360's today.

I guess the way they broke this news is because they don't wan't to spread confusion and to create buzz for what ever agenda they might have.

XBL has these types of updates every once in a while and they range from: performance upgrades to AAA hit preparation.

I have no idea why trolls would come in here and claim MSFT's attempt to add something great gamers can see and touch failed and they are disappointed by it.

yeah, as soon as i ended my SC4 seesion at like 2am last night i got the message and poof it started to download. however, im on a 768k DSL and i can basically tell when a current download is kinda small even for my bandwidth. so when i saw the progress bar speed through the download, i had my suspicions that this wasn't the BIG one.

The new dashboard and avatars is not direct competition to Home. Home is more of a MMO, which the dashboard update clearly is not. I think that the new dashboard is more of a shot at grabbing the Wii's userbase than the PS3's.

I have been on this site for awhile and really am tired of the bots vs droids and their stupid opinions. I own both and have had opinions on both systems. They both are not without faults. Its about gaming people, so go game and don't troll so much. I'm glad I have two 360's and a ps3, so I don't have to teeter on which system is better. This trolling shat is getting so stale; especially when it comes to trolling about upates and not even the games themselves. Get it through your heads, nobodys perfect in this generation of gaming.
