Console holiday exclusive line up: which offers the biggest bang for the buck?

Are you a gamer looking to upgrade? Or a parent gearing up for holiday gift-giving? Either way, you won’t want to miss The Co.’s assessment of Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft’s exclusive holiday line up of games.

bobsmith3277d ago

ps4, then wii u, then xbone

freshslicepizza3277d ago (Edited 3277d ago )

video suggests it's xbox one then wii u, and last ps4. most will likely disagree here. however it is talking about this holiday line-up, not next years and not previously but this holiday.

Aenea3277d ago

Which is kind of weird since it's also about upgrading to a new console, wouldn't then all the games that have come out count not just the ones still coming?

MasterCornholio3277d ago

@AENA

Well that's true. For new console owners not only do they have new games coming out this holiday but they could probably also pick up plenty of old games for dirt cheap.

I could imagine someone buying a PS4 bundle with Battlefront and then a used copy of Bloodborne for example.

freshslicepizza3277d ago

@Aenea
"Which is kind of weird since it's also about upgrading to a new console, wouldn't then all the games that have come out count not just the ones still coming?"

i would think so but those aren't the game being marketed anymore. that doesn't mean they don't exist but the new games are what are going to get the most attention.

xHeavYx3277d ago

If you want to focus on big AAA, mostly-shooters, then yeah, Xbox may have the upaper hand.
Personally I go with the PS4 because of variety and the track record of amazing games that launch not only during the holidays.

Spotie3277d ago

@moldy: Why is the video ONLY talking about what's coming out this holiday? Is that all YOU'D be looking at if you were going to get a console this holiday? Would you act like the rest of the library didn't exist?

Years of retail- particularly GameStop- experience tells me this is NEVER the case. When somebody's going in to buy a new console, holidays or not, they look at EVERYTHING that might interest them, not just what's coming out near the year's end.

You call yourself a primarily PC gamer who has a PS3, but all I see is shilling for Xbox and downplaying PlayStation with the most inane logic possible. I mean, if you're talking "console holiday exclusive lineup," and talking about prospective new console owners, they're gonna look at MORE than JUST what's coming out for this holiday.

Outside of fanboys- I won't name any names, but quite a few have made their way into this article- nobody buys a console the way this guy is laying out his argument. And, really, outside of fanboys of a particular console who have only JUST started supporting the notion, nobody ONLY looks at a console's holiday lineup when deciding which to buy.

gangsta_red3277d ago (Edited 3277d ago )

@Spotie

"Why is the video ONLY talking about what's coming out this holiday?"

Because that is what the subject of the video the author made it about Spotie. It also says that in the title. Why are you asking a question with such an obvious answer.

Maybe if the topic was "Console Year Exclusive Line Up" you may have a point.

"You call yourself a primarily PC gamer who has a PS3, but all I see is shilling for Xbox and downplaying PlayStation with the most inane logic possible."

What are you TALKING about? He is repeating what the actual VIDEO said. Where in the world did you get that he was shilling for Xbox and downplaying Playstation?

"nobody ONLY looks at a console's holiday lineup when deciding which to buy."

Really...nobody Spotie? Lmao, didn't know you were an expert and knew EVERYONE's shopping habits.

freshslicepizza3276d ago

@Spotie,
"Why is the video ONLY talking about what's coming out this holiday? Is that all YOU'D be looking at if you were going to get a console this holiday? Would you act like the rest of the library didn't exist?"

maybe you should ask him?

"Years of retail- particularly GameStop- experience tells me this is NEVER the case. When somebody's going in to buy a new console, holidays or not, they look at EVERYTHING that might interest them, not just what's coming out near the year's end."

that's fine.

"You call yourself a primarily PC gamer who has a PS3, but all I see is shilling for Xbox and downplaying PlayStation with the most inane logic possible."

where did i say the xbox one is better? i am echoing what the topic is about.

"I mean, if you're talking "console holiday exclusive lineup," and talking about prospective new console owners, they're gonna look at MORE than JUST what's coming out for this holiday."

you seem rather upset and i have no idea why.

"Outside of fanboys- I won't name any names, but quite a few have made their way into this article- nobody buys a console the way this guy is laying out his argument. And, really, outside of fanboys of a particular console who have only JUST started supporting the notion, nobody ONLY looks at a console's holiday lineup when deciding which to buy."

ok, let me get this straight. you think i am a shill for microsoft for reasons only you seem to know. you think all i do is attack sony with you selective reading, all while you somehow manage to ignore your own behavior. that is very interesting.

do you come to the forums always looking for a fight? it's amazing how all i did was repeat the topic and now you want to attack me. maybe you should ask yourself what brought you here and what did you expect to walk away from it? better yet, why are you worried about some perception to begin with when the ps4 is doing very very well? you have no reason to be upset about anything but for some reason you like to cause your own headaches.

kreate3276d ago

I think the x1 gives more bang for the buck cuz not only is it cheaper, it comes bundled w free games and other accessory. More so than the ps4.

More value than the ps4 and thats why i picked it up.

But ps4 is more popular so i would assume ps4 will still outsell the x1.

freshslicepizza3276d ago (Edited 3276d ago )

@xHeavyx,
"If you want to focus on big AAA, mostly-shooters, then yeah, Xbox may have the upaper hand."

are we still trying to go there? they are promoting rare replay which is not a shooter but a collection of rare games which are not shooters, gears of war remaster which is a third person shooter, forza 6 which is a racing game, rise of the tomb raider which is an action/adventure game, halo 5 which is a shooter game, and fable legends which is a fantasy/role playing game. that to you means it's mostly shooters? i don't know about you but 2 out of 6 is not mostly anything.

@kreate,
"I think the x1 gives more bang for the buck cuz not only is it cheaper, it comes bundled w free games and other accessory. More so than the ps4."

microsoft is definitely the more aggressive of the two in pushing more bang for your buck. the ps4 is outselling it by a 2-1 margin it seems so that pits greater pressure on them to try and create more value. sony may drop the price of the ps4 soon to $350 as well.

XBONE has two to arguably three huge exclusives and all the big AAA third party support.

PS4 game has no big exclusive, they do have all the big AAA third party support.

Nintendo has a couple of big exclusives but none of the big AAA third party support.

Take bias away ... the answer for THIS holiday is pretty clear.

SoapShoes3277d ago

Dragon Quest and Tales of are big enough. Plus Disgaea 5. A bunch of great smaller games is just as good as one big game for selling consoles. Nathan Drake Collection is pretty big as well.

N4g_null3277d ago

I know right pc and a wiiu lol.

jb2273277d ago

XBO has one huge exclusive in Halo, a timed exclusive in RotTR, the remastered original Gears & a racer in Forza. PS4 has Until Dawn, a highly rated uniquely interactive experience, Tearaway Unfolded, a game that is great fun for all ages, The Uncharted Collection which is great for returning players but worth its weight in gold for people who haven't experienced the franchise, and a handful of exclusive deals for all of the biggest third party titles.

There you go, took bias away from your comment to present a clearer picture which makes both consoles look enticing for different types of gamers...the gamer that prefers the more traditional idea of fps games and racers would go w/ the XBO for the best holiday lineup, the gamer who prefers a more widespread catalog of genres would go w/ the PS4. So its clear that the answer for this holiday still comes solely down to personal preference, not some cut & dry "winner".

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory3277d ago

@SoapShoes
I don't see a lot people buy those games in the west.

Japanese games has been overshadowed on PS for a good while unless it a franchise that grew a lot bigger on PS.

Darkfist3276d ago

@OtakuDJK1NG-Rory

but they sell well enough for the next game to be localized.

Both offer a great lineup its all a matter of preference.

freshslicepizza3277d ago

of course it is but it's obvious the two biggest rivals are always xbox and playstation fans. but because there are more ps4 owners out there it is the xbox one that will take the most abuse on the forums.

jb2273277d ago

I'm not seeing any XBO abuse here, only PS4 gamers having to defend a lineup that is absolutely worthwhile from a handful of XBO gamers who claim that there is some clear "winner" as to holiday content. They both offer great but different prospects. This Spring looks better for both consoles all around imo, it actually blows the holidays out of the water for me...QB, UC4, Far Cry, SFV, etc...

Letthewookiewin3277d ago (Edited 3277d ago )

@Wob That's funny because the X1 only has had one exclusive over 90 on metacritic and it was an indie.

PSN_ZeroOnyx3277d ago

Should be called Xbox never /s

3277d ago
slappy5083277d ago

Im sorry but why do I only have to consider games that were released in the holiday when I purchase a console.

Also he just dismissed Sony off hand as if they had absolutely nothing other than 3rd party deals. NO mention of Disgea 5 (83% average) Dragons Quest, Tales of Zestira, Tearaway Unfolded, and Until Dawn. Obviously he has his type of games that he likes but the playstation four offers a nice variety of different styles of games

Fro_xoxo3277d ago (Edited 3277d ago )

The mentality in general is that most people are looking for AAA titles a.k.a BIG games. The ones that people go out and buy consoles for.

Honestly speaking, do the masses rush out in droves to buy a new console for games like Tales, Disgea and Tearaway? These games are for those with an acquired taste.

Hold that thought, from that perspective.. Halo Tomb Raider and Forza would be highly recommended. .

Also, you don't have to consider only games released in the fall.. You could even consider games from the start of the gen as a new console owner..

but this article is talking about the Holidays..in the context of exclusives.

--

slappy5083277d ago

sony has a large amount of niche games that appeal to different audiences, which explains why you won't see millions of sales for one game, it's spread over the install base. the same can be applied to steam vs consoles: steam generates much larger revenue but often one would see that the highest sales for one game goes to consoles because there is more to choose from in the library. I understand that quality should be a factor but it is subjective. I don't like racing games or first person shooters which made the Ps4 and wii U obvious choices for me.

user99502793277d ago

isn't tearaway a Vita port? Is this the standard for big games on Playstation 4?

lol

chrisco84au3277d ago (Edited 3277d ago )

@Martinstrings -

Rare Replay ring a bell? By your reasoning the standard for big games on the XBONE are ported N64 titles.

Think before you post. There is a reason you have one bubble.

For the record, I love Rare Replay, it is an amazing collection and deserves all the praise it receives. I simply used it as a clear example to reply to a troll comment.

Also Tearaway unfolded isn't a port, it is about 75% the same game with many parts optimised or changed for the PS4. Well worth a look.

On topic, if as the article is about only this holiday seasons AAA exclusives, XBONE is in pole position, they are throwing everything they have out. We can argue about past releases or future games but for the purpose of this article, XBONE looks to have the lineup to watch.
Of course everything is preference and subjective, there is never a clear 100% 'winner' as everyone's tastes are different. This is a good thing.

kreate3276d ago (Edited 3276d ago )

Tales is actually pretty big. But halo is much bigger.

"Im sorry but why do I only have to consider games that were released in the holiday when I purchase a console."

who says you have to. the video is about what's coming this holiday and what each will be marketing leading up to christmas. why do you think so many oscar contender movies come out at the end of the year? it's because the other ones can be forgotten that came out earlier. christmas season is like that too, it's the busiest time of the year.

"Also he just dismissed Sony off hand as if they had absolutely nothing other than 3rd party deals. you have to remember, this is about marketing. most of those games you listed are for a niche crowd and won't be getting a ton of marketing. that doesn't mean those games aren't good, they are just not going to be promoted as system sellers. how much advertising is sony going to spend on until dawn compared to uncharted 4 and which will move more systems?

Isn't this the foundation for your next Xbox?
This is exactly what some of us have been talking about...a way to bridge existing console users into a Xbox branded PC

crazyCoconuts17d ago

I mean.... It would be the end of Xbox.
But at least you'll have a way to play the games you've paid for on new hardware

porkChop16d ago

How is this the foundation for the next Xbox?

Profchaos16d ago

It's been talked about by industry insiders that the next Xbox will not be a Xbox as we know it (traditional closed ecosystem) but more in line with the steamdeck and would allow multiple marketplaces and such as steam to run on it like how the ru has forced iOS to adopt outside marketplaces.

In short think of the nextbox to be more like a steamdeck and less like a xbox

another Interview?

how is he the only one who loves the spotlight as much as he does lol

Futureshark23d ago

Let's not forget he also famously passed on Spider-man, Genshin Impact and GTA3.

However it's almost kind of cute how he can keep that sh1t-eating grin and say he's a 'no regrets' kind of guy, especially when you think how much just these 5 titles could have swung the world in Xbox's favour instead of Sonys.

How he's kept his job I don't know, he must sure be keeping Papa Nadella's shaft warm somehow.

"But, but Gamepass, he introduced that!!!"

Yes he did, and now look at Xbox, all it's exclusives are coming to Playstation now rendering the platform obsolete.

DarXyde23d ago

Honestly, with that kind of track record, you can't convince me Spencer hasn't eaten it from the back in the name of self preservation. Probably unwashed...and at least twice.

That aside, my interpretation of everything here is Xbox has been mismanaged a bit too much and Nadella came down from his throne. The way it is now, I don't believe for a minute the multiplatform move was Spencer's idea. I don't even think the acquisitions was Spencer's work. At this point, I reckon he's got as much power in his role as Hunter Biden at a Ukrainian energy company.

DivineHand12523d ago

You can never tell how things will turn out if he had said yes to those games. Xbox already has access to some great IPs, however, they hardly do anything with them or fail to deliver. It's also possible their presentation wasn't good at the time, and they made sure the next presentation was better.

I believe that part of being successful is releasing things in the right place at the right time.

Many major corporations have a story similar to passing on successful business ideas. Let us look at Sony Pictures for example. Back when Marvel went bankrupt, they had the opportunity to buy the entire Marvel for only $25 Million but turned them down. An unnamed big shot at Sony reportedly claimed that “nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters,”. They ended up taking Spiderman for $10 Million instead.

https://www.avclub.com/sony...

Fast forward to today, we can see what the Marvel brand has done for Disney. Is it possible the same success would have been possible had Sony acquired those IPs. We can't say that for sure and it is possible most of those IPs that are successful today may not have been used.
