PlayStation 3.00 – Is it Worthy of a Point Zero Title?

On this week’s Lost Spark podcast Antony and Darren talk about the latest PlayStation 3.00 update and the features that lie within but have trouble getting on board with the fact that this is a full version update… There just doesn’t seem to be enough there to get too excited about – is it really enough to justify a full version number jump?

Also discussed is a good deal of VR speculation, pondering about if releasing multiplayer only games is really a good idea in the wake of recent attempts and more details about that exciting Star Wars Battlefront beta.

Of course the headline chosen was done so because clickbait has replaced honest game journalism.

Sad really.

The media is making me fall out of love with coming to news sites to try and keep up to date on things. It can put me off coming back for months at a time, lately I just keep an eye on the twitter feeds of the devs I'm interested in to keep up on info and just avoid n4g altogether, I log in when I'm bored... Anyone else find themselves doing this lately? "Gamergate" kept me away for a good 8 months.

While we're on the discussion, I've searched online the last few days but couldn't find anythign on it...

Theres a feature I never noticed in Broadcasting before, where it will annotate the comments people leave while you play. I normally have view comments disabled and never see what people are saying when watching my streams, so this is a really useful feature for me.

My question is, is this part of 3.0? Or did it come in a previous update and I'm only noticing it now? Thanks ahead for anyone that can clarify this for me :)

If you listen to the podcast you'll hear that the Lost Sparks run through all of the features in 3.0 and give their opinion on the update, hence the title!

I was explaining to the above why there were other tags for xbox one etc. Because they discuss other things in the podcast. Which made it evident they had only read the title then came to comment.

So then I explained WHY this title was chosen, because the current clickbait narrative of the week is SSU-3.0. That's how the media operates, they choose whatever fits the current narrative, and clickbait operates primarily on angering the majority with ridiculous headlines.

Now it feels like you only read the first or second line of my comment, because that's the only way your response makes sense.

As for whether it was "worthy" or not. That line of discussion sounds so immature. Incrimental updates don't change the layout or look of things. Major updates do, and 3.0 did. Hence why it's not an incrimental one. The amount of features do not define it.

p.s Will we ever get a new Viva Pinata?! I'd kill a loved one for a new Viva Pinata!

They didn't seem to really add anything. I got more cloud storage space from my sucker tax, but of course in typical cumbersome Sony fashion, I have to upload them one at a time instead of being able to just "select all". More of a chore than it's worth.

Don't saves automatically upload to the cloud? I'm sure I seen an option for this in settings.

Dunno. I had to remove a bunch from the cloud cause I kept running out of space and got sick of all the messages about uploads failing every time I turned the PS4 on. Seems I have to manually re-upload all of those.

what really annoys me is why cant it upload them while on dash or in game and do it in background?
why does it have to be in rest mode to autoupload?

Popular YouTuber's are asking for people to join their community on PS4, and there was a thread earlier with certain Xbox One users complaining 'The N4G Community' created using the community feature that came with 'PS4 Update' 3.00 wasn't inclusive of the Xbox One platform (even though anyone can join), and these people seemingly could not comprehend it was not available on X1.

So I would say 10GB of Cloud Storage and a inadvertent endorsement from Xbox fans makes Update 3.00 worthy of its Number /

Absolutely not. The features they've added are pointless and broken. I really hope they get with the program soon when it comes to FW updates and start adding features that us players have been asking for since launch. Terrible showing from Sony.

3.00 isn't about delivering new features you've been asking for since however long ago. It's a sign that major core functionality has been added (communities and events primarily here). Has nothing to do with somehow measuring whether or not they gave you what you wanted.

Rather than congratulating themselves on adding "core functionality" social media features, Sony ought to have bothered to put in some of the basic, fundamental OS features that have been missing since day 1.

No, this absolutely is the topic. Before debating whether or not the additions in the update are worthy of of a 3.0 version number, we have to question whether or not the current OS build is sufficient for a 1.0 version number.

It actually is. You're just ignorant of the point of a full number release. I tried to explain it, but you don't really care about that, just what it does that you consider to be of value and worth.

But then again, that other release was worth more than just a minor release.

In terms of coding, it was probably more major to them than the end result to the users. I feel like 3.00 is the last major push for anything social, and now that they're happy with what's been done and they'll be able to move to more enjoyable user feature. Just a guess as a fellow programmer.

Why are so many people always so caught up on non-gaming functionality? Yeah, it's cool for a Console to do other things, I use my PS4 for Movies, Music & Social. But I get slightly peeved whenever people claim PS4 Features/Apps are inferior.

Didn't Sony announce to everybody they made a 'Game Console' from the start? Meanwhile Sony's nearest competitor has only recently began to emphasise that messaging. Sony doesn't need to copy or match what the competition is doing, they're No.1 in the market by messaging the exact opposite. I care about Gaming, everything else on my Console comes a distant second.

Thankfully, the PS brand has and always will be about 'Games' first & foremost /

How about matching what the PS3 can do? Like friend logins, custom backgrounds, folders ect...There's a lot of basic features missing and we're two years in. But hey at least we got stickers now.

I miss my handmade Calvin and Hobbes theme with custom background and custom icons on ps3, spent ages in photoshop on those! :(

I believe it turned out there was severe hardware/software security issues on the ps3 with those customization options among a few other features not currently present on ps4... They're definitely coming, but I have the suspicion they're making damn sure it's as secure as they can make it before rolling those features out.

Some people say they're not present so they can sell us PS4 Themes, but I find that hard to believe considering how very few Themes there are (at least on the Irish EU store) and the amount they've given away for free.

Just like streaming, it will inevitably come, either way it doesn't effect the consoles primary purpose which is Gaming.

And in case someones wondering how do you hack a console through custom images? It involves inserting some unfriendly code through a JPEG/PNG or whatever your preferred codec/method of compression is.

This is why I stopped reading news on games. "Not enough content to justify a number jump??" If the devs feel they want to jump numbers, add symbols or call it update Mock5, they can and we'll update and continue upon our lives.

I'm just happy with the storage increase and them finally fixing the download speeds, couldn't careless about it justifying a meaningless title.
