Mark from GamersFTW writes his opinion on five of the best video game soundtracks
Skyrim's definitely a stand out there, did a lot to enhance the games immersion and give it it's character.
Cannot argue with 1 and 5 at all. My list would definitely have Jesper Kyd's Freedom Fighters rather than the slightly overrated (in my opinion) Assassin's Creed 2. Timesplitters 2 also has some cracking tracks from Goldeneye's composer Graeme Norgate.
Basically anything by Jeremy Soule. Go listen to the ‘Kuldahar Theme’ or 'Easthaven in Peace' on Youtube. Also, Shadow of the Colossus had the best music of any game in my opinion.
Goldeneye was awesome. GTA: Vice City has to be up there - great 80s soundtrack. I really enjoyed Fallout 3s radio so jovial complete opposite to the setting! Great article.
Not sure how you managed to only choose 5, there are so many fantastic soundtracks out there! Gotta put Journey, Zelda and Final Fantasy up there.
Skyrim definitely deserves the #1 spot. I love the opening theme, epic and powerful!
Fifa, they have new tunes every year that make me wanna dance with somebody
All of these soundtracks are very good, but I can't classify them as video game music. They sound like movie soundtracks that appear in a game instead. This is a almost comletely different kind of music than what you are listening to in Final Fantasy, Zelda, Mario, Mega Man, or Mortal Kombat as example.
I'd agree if the games weren't original scores, but as they are they're surely just as much game music as any Final Fantasy soundtrack, for example?
Really poor list. In my opinion guy who wrote this don't know anything about soundtracks.
Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy (X onward are fantastic, IMO), Folklore (great soundtrack), Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, Zelda, Halo, Bioshock all have excellent soundtracks. So mostly RPG's have really awesome soundtracks
Funny how opinions can differ. IMO Final Fantasy scores are the best ones but the quality has been declining from FFX onwards. FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII and FFIX are amazing. FFX is also pretty good.
My favourites http://postimg.org/image/4y...
Not the five I would've chosen. My choices - Journey, Halo, Mass Effect 1, Okami, Lost Odyssey.
Score = original music composed for the film/game (e.g. Final fantasys, skyrim, etc). Soundtrack = collection of songs that appear in a film/game. Some songs might be original and others migh not (e.g. GTA franchise, Nhl, etc.) Just wanted to point that out. My favourite score has got to be in FFIX or FFVI. I also love metal gear solid and last of us scores (fits perfectly). Skyrim score is the most epic one. GTA Vice City soundtrack is pure gold. Edit. @SaveFerris: Yes, Journey has an amazing score! I'll add that to my list as well.
Some of my favorites: Mass Effect Halo Deus Ex HR Elder scrolls games Fallout games TLoU Uncharted Dragon Age (1 and 3) Guild wars 2 WoW Mirrors Edge
Uncharted is my favorite hands down. That theme was properly epic, and it became almost a Pavlov's dog type scenario, every time I heard that theme start swelling, I knew I was in for a true adventure. Also, I don't think Max Payne 3 gets proper credit for its dynamic score. The band HEALTH is already really great, but the idea that they created a score that Rockstar was able to dynamically weave into gameplay so that it swells as the action ramps up was a true achievement. That airport section was absolutely epic and that was largely down to the scoring on offer.
The Last Of Us Shenmue Zelda Destiny
If Halo isn't on your list than your list isn't legit.
Yes Halo should be there too Edit: The Last Of Us Shenmue Zelda Destiny Halo
shadow of the colossus
Great list, although I would have liked to see The Last of Us or Persona 4 thrown in there, those games have amazing musical scores!
And where is Silent Hill 2???
Love the inclusion of farcry a hugely underrated soundtrakck! Great article.
