Sony’s PlayStation 4 has shot out to a substantial lead this generation and Microsoft’s Xbox One has to play catch-up. But will the gap close?
Short of a miracle I seriously doubt it. As long as they keep supporting the console doesn't matter to me.
Are you saying No or Boourns?
there has been so many of these articles of late and the answer would be no
Of course it has no chance of catching up. Xbox One is currently selling slower than PlayStation 3. PS4 on the other hand is selling better than PS3 and 360 combined.
Xbone is tracking better than PS3, just by a very small margin, for now. It's very likely to change considering PS3's eventual spike in sales after it's first few years. I definitely don't see Xbone coming to PS3 in LT sales, that's for sure.
In Q1 2008, Sony reported that they shipped 1.56 million PlayStation 3 units. http://www.gamesindustry.bi... In Q1 2015, Microsoft reported that they shipped a combined total of 1.4 million Xbox 360 and Xbox One units. Once you subtract 360 numbers from that total, you'll see that X1 sold even less units in that timespan. http://www.dualshockers.com... Not to mention that Xbox One only crossed the 14 million sold mark in its first 23 months on the market, while PlayStation 3 crossed that same milestone in its first 21 months on the market. At this point in time Sony's slowest selling console still performed better than Microsoft's fastest selling console. This can be attributed to the fact that the PlayStation brand has always had a far greater global appeal than the Xbox brand.
Not a chance, I think even the staunchest of Xbox dudes have come to accept this by now. Xbox One is selling slower than the PS3. What that dude above me said, basically.
Most have, but you still have those desperate stragglers in random comment sections that believe the XBone is really close to PS4, and will eventually pass. Kindof like doomsday theorist.
It's not selling slower. It's selling better in fact.
@ Mystogan PlayStation 3 sold 14,879,303 units in its first 22 months on the market. http://www.vgchartz.com/art... Xbox One sold 13,882,024 units in its first 22 months on the market http://www.vgchartz.com/art... That's basically a 1 million sales difference between the two platforms in the same time period
It's not happening
No, so stop asking, getting really tired of these articles now.
Just like the Mega Drive could not catch up the Super Nintendo...nope..no chance. There is a better hardware out there, there are many more games for that other hardware as well. Microsoft stays on a nice second place worldwide. Thats still a big achievement since they entered the market decades later than Nintendo.
Simple answe: NO
I think the xb1 has a good chance of catching up if they start doing a bundle that includes a ps4 in the box.
But wouldn't that mean 1 ps4 per xbone sold ? Then it would mean never catching up right ?
Bundles don't count for software according to some so I guess they wouldn't count for hardware either.
I honestly don't care, both are selling really well, just as long as they carry on selling and carry on bringing the games then i am happy.
I agree. Let Phil and Yoshida worry about the sales. I care more about what gamers are coming to these consoles. As long as both always has 1st and 3rd party support, I'm happy. I'd worry more about the Wii U and it's new successor the NX.
For the last time, no. Catching up in the US is still on the cards, but worldwide, there's not a chance. Whether or not it catches up in the US depends on how well Halo is able to fair against all of the PS4 bundles coming this holiday and a potential PS4 price drop in the US. If the PS4 gets that official price drop, it's extremely unlikely the XBone will catch up even there, at least not for a long while. It's pretty much just going to be tug of war in the US, while the Xbone gets dominated everywhere else.
Is that a serious question? Of course it doesnt its too far behind. This gens winner is already chosen. But that doesnt mean it cant be a great console. In fact, I think MS is better when they are behind, they try a lot harder. This gen is going how I think it should go, its the best order of things and all gamers should be happy with it.
Apparently I wasnt the only one who thought humble pie would make xbox a better brand than it was during the previous generation. Xbox owners should be happy, indeed.
Won't know till the end of the generation.
I believe we already know. If they were neck and neck I would agree with you. But since there's a massive difference between the two I don't believe things will turn around for Microsoft. Remember it took Sony over 7 years to beat the 360. How long do you think it will take Microsoft to even start outselling the PS4? And when it starts to outsell the PS4 how long do you think it will take them to close the GAP? I honestly don't see them achieving that in the next 7 years so its pretty safe to say that the XB1 won't catch up to the PS4. There are only two regions where it can happen. The US and the UK. Those are the only regions where Microsoft can overtake the PS4.
The Xbox generation was over the moment Microsoft unveiled the console.
About as much of a chance as the scent of my fart catching up to me riding a superbike.
BEST... METAPHOR... EVER!!!!!!!!!!! Bubs up to you my good sir!!!!
I'm sure there's a GTA mod for that!
I don't think the average gamer cares about the competition between the two companies. Both are on the green side therefore they'll continue to be supported with games. . No cause for concern. The Xbox doesn't need to catch anything.. It isn't a priority. . It would be nice if we stopped approving articles like this which don't contribute to anything at all.
Why does it have to Playstation is the Wii of this generation I like both systems
In the U.S. Probably but worldwide XboxOne has Zero chance of catching up to the PS4 that's not hard to figure out.
Its virtually impossible right now. In order for the X1 to catch up it needs to at least double the sales of the PS4 globally going forward every month now to even have the chance of getting even in sales in another 24 months. The PS4 is beating the X1 sales wise globally nearly 2:1
No, but it doesn't need to. It can go on and still sell millions upon millions of consoles and still be a success. The original Xbox was a great success and it sold considerably less than the PS2. As long as MS keeps pushing great games and developing new content, gamers of the Xbox One are going to be very happy.
The original xbox had a base plan to introduce microsoft tothe mainstream, it was a financial failure, but they achieved recognition and a prescence in the games industry. The xbox was always a long term plan and Gates approved the heck out it, despite the money the brand obliterated to get to this point. Infact, I want to assume both Gates and Balmer had hands in keeping it from being axed because of. Long term, thoughtout vision.
The Xbox brand has never been profitable which is why M$ has debated many times about selling the Xbox division, and rich vultures line up to buy it in hopes of turning it around. No worries though, rich vultures have also been pleading with Sony to incorporate the PlayStation brand to make a hostile takeover possible through stock ownership.
It wont ever came close, only crazy people can say otherwise.
I don't see that happening.
Don't really care if it catches it or not. Just as long as it sales enough to stay in the game.
The PS2 sold more than the Cube and Xbox combined, but I preferred the Xbox and the Cube to it as a console, so numbers are for the console makers to worry about, not me. As an owner of both consoles, my preference is the X1, so as far as I am concerned It doesn't have to catch the PS4, probably will never catch it, I am fine with that. All I ask is Phil Spencer keep doing what he has been doing, they have turned the ship around just stay the course and things will take care of themselves. Who comes in 1st 2nd or 3rd, I am not concerned with. I am happy with what they are doing with the Xbox. Which console gives me the best value experience, most playtime is all I rate them on.
Well said @hiawa23 Xbox continues to bring some awesome titles that's all that matters in the end.
And yet with all they are doing and their exclusives they are coming out with, there is no reason for me to own a X1. Everything combined and I still feel X1 is wasted money as a consumer. Which is why they won't catch up, because the public at large feels similar.
You don't speak for everyone. There are lots of Xbox One owners who are happy with their purchases. Just because it doesn't appeal to you doesn't ring true for everyone. If they keep pumping out great games, people will take notice.
I know several gamers who own just the PS4 who will be getting XB1 this holiday because of Forza 6, Quantum Break, Halo 5, Crackdown 2, Sea of Thieves and Recore. Unbiased gamers will end up with both systems in the end. Many gamers just sit back and wait for the right exclusive games to come out. Not everyone feels as you do about the XB1. Some gamers who did are having second thoughts now.
@XanderZane The only people having "second thoughts" are these hypothetical "PS4 owners" that XBox fans speak of. It's always an XBox One fan that says "Some of my friends who have PS4's are switching over to XBox One, because they realized they made a mistake and XBox exclusives are way better." I'm not trying to hate on you or anything like that, it's just an observation I've noticed over the past few years. I've yet to meet one PS4 owner who was dissatisfied with their purchase, or considered that they made a mistake and want to switch over to XBox One. It's actually been the reverse in my experiences, where people who bought XBox Ones switched over to PS4.
@GrubsterBeater Who said anything about switching? I know PS4 owners who love their Ps4, but are also going to get an XB1 because of many of the exclusives they want to play. I pretty much did the same thing last gen. Bought an XBox 360 and waited for great PS3 exclusives to come out and then bought a PS3. I still use my PS3/XBox360 at least a couple times a week. This gen I just went all in and bought both systems on their launch days. You'll always find some gamers who will sell one console and buy another and maybe switch back again over time. It's not unusual.
@neonridr I speak of how I personally feel and if the public at large felt as you do then X1 would be doing much better than it is. @ZanderZane Most of my personal friends are on PS4 while work colleagues are 2/3 in favor of X1. Now while I've never personally met anyone who traded in their PS4 for X1, I have met a couple people who went from 360 to X1 just to trade up for PS4, and nobody I know owns both. No one game is worth buying a console, especially X1. While not everyone feels as I do about X1, sales charts say more agree with me than you.
you thought the original xbox and gamecube were better then ps2? i have not heard that before. well to each their own. Sounds a lot like underdog love more then anything. 1st is really important though when the lead is this big. It secures a lot of stuff for the console. I know it isn't crazy apparent now but if ps4 doubles or triples xbox one in sales then it will have a huge effect on the future of games on the system from 3rd party devs.
Xbox One will never catch up.
Still, it's nice to see M$ try.
This is getting old, stop asking.
Next up why PS4 is better than Xbox One and after that, why XBox One is better than PS4 followed by the glut of who has better games and vice versa.
I see you've been here before.
I think the answer you were looking for is actually no. You're welcome.
People are delusional. for this sales gap people are talking about will not close. to even be a relevant topic after the holiday season the ps4 would need to sell 0 and the xbox one 5 million. That would keep them still 8 million behind. i hate to point it out that isnt going to happen. MS should be happy if they sell half a million more than sony this holiday, which probably wont happen. IF Sony even hints at a 350 price drop its over. shit ill get another PS4 at 350 before i get an xbox one. As long as their are people with that mentality out there its over. the xbox came out and was worth about 300 to 350$ not 400-500$ so right now the price is what it should have been but its been 2 years so to get people to buy it needs to be like $250 -300. that isnt going to happen so this topic is BS at this point. plus i want to say do people just swing from MS balls. last gen people hated sony so much it was all doom and gloom articles. now everyone is optimistic, give me a break. xbox fans are the worst
I remember this topic being interesting one single time. Considering nothing has changed since everyone already got the point I'm wondering why people feel it deserves to be written articles about and called news...
It's a backhanded way of smearing PS4 domination in everyone's face while getting clicks. It's not even a serious question anymore.
I don't think it will but the real question is, why does it matter? Both consoles are doing very well. One doesn't have to fail in order for the other one to succeed.
For some reason I read this like the xbox one catching a ps4 cold...
No. Just like how the 360 and PS3 had no chance of beating the wii saleswise last gen. Sony wins this time without question.
This annoys me that these articles are never titled, "in North America."
Nope, the lead for PS4 will only grow.
Happy Xbox gamer here...and I say hell no! The lead is only gonna grow when PS4 price cut. Shit Im even buying one this holiday.
Unfortunately for xbox one is the that the ps4 makes it irrelevant thanks to its superior hardware and games. I do think however the xbox one will remain competitive in the US
Even if Sony closed all first party studios, the PS4 would still outsell the one.
Good lord don't say that.
