Microsoft Provides a First Peek at Windows 10 on Xbox One

Thurrott: Microsoft has announced that the “new Xbox One experience”–i.e. the Dashboard update that includes Windows 10 underpinnings–has begun rolling out to Xbox Preview Program participants. Here’s what you can expect.

First, this is an early release, and it’s likely that things will evolve before the public release, which is set for the November system update. And while Microsoft has clearly been over-selling the Windows 10 stuff here, the Xbox team just refers to this as “the new Xbox One Experience,” which is a pretty terrible name in its own right.

What this thing is, really, is a monthly system update that also happens to include a Dashboard UX (user experience) overhaul. This is something that Microsoft did a number of times over the lifetime of the Xbox 360, but this is the first major UX change to Xbox One.

Well it looks a hell of a lot better than the Windows 8 metro design. And the home screen seems a lot less cluttered. Those two pieces right there make this a worthwhile redesign.

I agree. Definitely looks a whole lot better (I don't dislike the current layout but I don't love it either).

are xbox one owners able to customize their own layout? that is what all the console makers should allow its users to do. on windows 10 you can get rid of some tiles, or make them smaller or bigger. move them around and so on. you can also change your background image to whatever you want.

Win10 on XB1 will also enable WDDM 2.0 and with it, several new GCN capabilities fo devs to take advantage of. Win10 will help XB1 as much as DX12 on its' own because they were desgned to work together.

WDDM 2.0 is an updated graphics driver in windows 10 that allows for virtual memory addressing for GPUs that support it. The purpose is to reduce CPU utilization and kernel overhead. DX12 require this and its basically what allows the API to grant lower level management to developers. This is different from the past as it will require developers to manage their own memory.

Well i can. I did the preview program twice on the 360 and although it comes with a lot of new things it is often riddled with bugs that you just can't avoid. It's not like you can opt out of it either. I'd rather get it when it's finalized for full release. Great, for those that want to test it out beforehand. Glad there is less loading times between screens now.

You can opt out of it. In fact by default the all preview members are opted out. You have to opt in to,get it.

Well i was basing it on my experiences on the 360. I guess they changed it for the xbox one since i wasn't aware you can save apps on an external drive.

Can't wait for all the kinks to be sorted out and for this to be released. Funny how much Xbox One has changed since November 2013. This behemoth of an update drops at the perfect time with all the new great games coming out (Halo 5, Fallout 4, Rise of The Tomb Raider, Battlefront, Forza 6, etc.)

I love my xbox one but the dashboard is too cluttered. Even with this new update it is still a giant mess. I gotta give it to the PS4, it is simple yet very effective with it's UI.
