The Wii really bolted strongly out of the gate, but PS4 will have way longer sales legs to eventually surpass it

never4get1545d ago

When PS2 almost 3 years old, it sold 12.5 million in Japan. When PS4 almost 2 years old, it sold less than 2 million in Japan.

Doesn't looks good for Japanese AAA Games' Future.

Yoshida, The Last Guardian, Gravity Rush 2, AAA JRPGs, please sell more PS4 in Japan !!!

People have to also consider the price of the wii which was basically half the retail price of what the ps4 is now. The ps4 will also be supported close to 10 years after release whereas the wii lost support after 5 years. The lack of support in regards to wii affected the wii u which i know will also affect the nintendo NX.

Ps1 was supported up to 10 years which helped the ps2 to get supported over 10 years. The ps3 is still being supported in its ninth year on the market and because of the history of playstation and amassing support, it helped to garner trust from consumers which makes it a success today. Majority of gamers haven't any trust in nintendo today which is why they arent doing well with wii u and a lot are incredulous about the NX.

Look at the xbox, xbox 360 and now the xbox one. The xbox 360 is the biggest factor in why the zbox one isnt doing well

How the hell does it not look good? Shouldn't you be comparing the sales of PS4 and PS3, if you're comparing anything at all? Shouldn't you be taking the increase in handheld sales into account?

Did you make a comment just for the sake of making one?

The Wii took gaming by storm because everyone bought it, grandma's, aunties, children, even grown men. Don't think the PS4 will surpass Wii sales but why does that matter? you can't play sales on your console

The main thing going for PS4 over the Wii is that it will probably still be on shelves 10 years from now. The Wii was pretty much discontinued after 6.5 years.

PS4 sales aren't going to pull a lemming and jump off a cliff though. What did the Wii end up at 100 million? PS4 can definitely match that. That's PS1 numbers. This chart will be more relevant when compared again in a few years.

I don't know if PS4 will get to 100m faster than Wii (it's going to be close), but PS4 will surpass Wii overall sales because it's going to be sold for longer, and it's selling so extremely well and it's still at a $400 price which is a good deal above the mass consumer adoption rate ($199 - $249), it's even above the mass core gamer adoption rate price ($299), yet it's still going strong, compared to Wii's $249 (mass consumer adoption rate) for most of it's life cycle.

It's too early to call, but I seriously doubt PS4 will suffer that same fate as the Wii did in it's 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th years (dropped to 11m -> 5m -> 2m -> 500k) considering PS3 didn't, and there's plenty of room for price drops, a PS4 slim, and Sony's proven to support it's consoles for years after the normal 5 - 6 year cycle.

The following years for Wii / PS4

Launch: 3m / 4.4
2007: 16.5 / 14.4
2008: 24m / on track to sell a minimum of 15m units
2009: 21m / an avalanche and arguably unrivaled amount of games and price drop?
2010: 17m /
2011: 11m /
2012: 5m /
2013: 2m (100m units sold in 7 years) /
2014: 500k /
2015: on track for 100k if not less /

The question is can the PS4 hold on to it's sales momentum, and every sign is point at yes. And since the Wii had such awful year's 6 and 7, the PS4 has a real chance to make a comeback in those years and beat Wii to 100m. I see PS4 going on to sell over 120m units in it's lifetime.

PS4: 125m+
XBO: 70m - 80m
NX: 30m - 60m (if they nail price + hardware + services + games + 3rd party 60m)
Wii U: 20m (if they drop price to $199 a year before NX)

The only time Sony has sold less than 100 consoles was the 85m with the ps3 which started $100-$200 more expensive than the ps4. My money is on 125m ps4s sold...

I'm not sure how meaningful this chart could be. How many casuals who bought the Wii have since moved to phones and tablets for their gaming, if they even still game at all? I'd bet it's a significant number, but there's no way of knowing.

FunkyGoron1545d ago

PS4 will total around 80-100 mil. I don't see a reason for more consoles to be sold this gen than last gen.

Other than the Wii/Wii U, the current gen is basically the last gen on steroids. Blu Ray isn't new anymore, HD isn't new... these things are just much improved and/or faster and able to pull off higher graphics more easily.

I don't see what would draw buyers in that didn't buy last gen. If 80 mil bought PS3... what would make the extra 20 mil buy the PS4 this gen?

Qrphe1545d ago (Edited 1545d ago )

There seems to be a lot more evidence that current gen will do a lot better than last gen. PS4 and XO are cheaper for consumers and manufacturers, easier to develop for and are already ahead of their last gen counterparts.

>I don't see what would draw buyers in that didn't buy last gen

Games, there is a lot more software this time around and it's developed at a much faster rate.
