PS4 vs Xbox One vs Wii U Global Lifetime Sales – August 2015 Update

VGChartz' William D'Angelo writes: "Looking at the total sales of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U in August 2015 we can see that PlayStation 4 has continued to grow its lead over both the Xbox One and Wii U, and has now comfortably outsold both of them combined. The Xbox One is also slowly increasing its lead over the Wii U.

The PlayStation 4 has now passed the 25 million mark, selling 25.45 million units lifetime. The Xbox One has sold 13.88 million units and the Wii U 10.28 million units.

When they announced those numbers they said they were shipped. Wouldn't be surprised if by now they're sold though. Crazy how PS4 is still selling a lot! They should hit 30+ million by March 2016

I'm a PS4 gent, but no one cares about shipped, for good reason. It's not interchangeable with sold through. If retailers don't move those units there's just a bunch of shipped units sitting in a warehouse somewhere, waiting for a price cut to move. Not at all saying that's the case with PS4. Just pointing out why sold through numbers are given more consideration than shipped.

ummm from the looks of it no one cares for shipped numbers for the reason that they can very much be sitting at the shelves. Hence why when talking about sales we don't count the 15 million that Microsoft shipped since the beginning of the yr. It's made clear by the majority on this website that sold through numbers are more important to shipped.

Sony sold 3 million PS4s last quarter. If they sold another 3 million PS4s this quarter it would bring them to 28.3 million units. 1.7 million units between 28.3 and 30 million units seems pretty "close" to 30 million units... Don't forget this quarter Sony has Until Dawn, Mad Max, Metal Gear Solid V, and Destiny Taken King to help boost hardware sales compared with last quarter.

It was 'shipped' back in July and these figures are sold. Also notice they're from August 29th. It doesn't make them right but if you're going to knock something at least be straight with your own numbers.

It's probably hovering around the 26m mark about now. Don't take notice of that 30m for goodness sake.

all this talk about MS's recovery under phil spencer yet the gap is only growing and world wide sales will always favor ps4 or PlayStation brand in general

last holiday season it was xbox one will catch ps4 in usa market than it won yet ps4 still won world wide.

now its the better exclusives lineup or being able to play xbox360 games

none of that is gonna make a difference. and no i am not talking like a fanboys or anything. bottom line is the mess up for xbox one's launch IMO has tarnished xbox's image and it may take a while to recover

The main thing I don't understand, is if people hate this website so much, and they feel it's so irreputable, why do they continue to not only look at the numbers they provide, but comment on the articles?

Perhaps it's due to the fact that they are the only way anyone can get an IDEA of where the consoles are at in-between the actual manufacturers quarterly release of numbers.

Either way. It is literally the SAME comment subject you see in their articles every, single, time.

That second sentence of yours is the truth. I'd love it if we had more precise numbers and did't have to use VGChartz, especially since we know just how unreliable and biased that site can be. But it's the only thing we've got.

Which is why I don't bother with complaining about their crap anymore. I just operate under the "If these numbers are true" mentality and move on from there.

Yea he did. I remember watching Sony's E3 2003 back when I was in like the 3rd grade with my older brother. I think the PS2 was at like 50 or 60 million and the Gamecube and Xbox were at 10 million. A lot of people think Sony's cocky now but they have no idea what a cocky Sony truly is. This was when Sony was really cocky lol

Gaming media and gaming sites weren't as prevalent back then. Back then people weren't really watching E3 (believe it or not, E3 back then was more centered around the press than it was the fans). The only time people really went to gaming sites was mainly to find cheat codes and that was it. Now that gaming media is out there and is a lot more prevalent today, companies can't take jabs like that at each other anymore for fear of ruining their reputation. 1 of the reasons for this is because we live in a sensitive society now. People are very sensitive and it would get blown out of proportion. If a Sony rep said something like that in today's time they would probably lose their job and get crucified for it lol

You know it is because las sales Quarter:

Sony shipped "over" 3 million PS4 units world wide.

Microsoft shipped

Slightly over 1 million Xbox one units in the same time frame!

That's not closing numbers in a metric.

If by 'the gap is closing' you are referring to the PS4 catching up to the PS3/PS2 then yes I can agree (yes it's wayyyyyy off but still early in the life cycle and has a chance, I know that, I was just trying to make a light hearted point)

Because the gap between the PS4 and XBONE is NOT closing, it's widening by the hour, maybe at a slower rate than previously at times but at no stage is the gap even close to closing world wide.

To make it simple, for a gap to close, the XBONE has to sell MORE than the PS4 world wide. Simple. Also simple, it doesn't and won't happen.

As a matter of fact Microsoft is combining Xbox one + the Xbox 360 shipping numbers for total = Xbox systems per sales quarter financial's they do not separate the number of shipped units broken down between the two systems.

Sony also does this but breaks the unit shipping numbers, you have to go to corporate Japanese playstation site for official shipped numbers break down.

VGChartz have fudged the figures for PS4 since they started tracking them, so nothing new about that. PS4 is most likely closer to 27 Million units than 25 Million.

Certain groups of gamer's feel irritated when sales are discussed, they would rather talk about games, fair enough. But if you don't move enough console/software units, some 3rd parties may not put the effort in, and/or some games may not be release at all. Quite a few games are starting to come to PS4/PC only.

Exclusives alone cannot carry a system, you need a combination of great exclusive IP and the best 3rd party support, which PS4 has in spades. Even during its darkest days, PS has always owned the home console space Worldwide, and that trend continues /

Well in fairness the Wii U has been on the market a lot longer. X1 is not selling badly, not at all...it's just that PS4 is selling so well, it shows X1 is trailing behind significantly.

Dog owners normally say there's no such thing as a bad Dog, it's the owners who are bad. In X1's case it's not all the owners, but the vocal minority (at least on N4G) that make the system look bad. It's a perception thing /

Crazy numbers for sony don't understand why .. I do prefer my ps4 over the xbox but with network probs (tonight) and lack of games and the postive moves msoft have made things would start to change.
