Resident Evil: Umbrella Corps looks awful but guns still belong in horror games

Seemingly in response to action horror titles such as Dead Space, Gears of War, and Resident Evil - which recently dropped all pretense of being scary with the announcement of competitive online shooter Umbrella Corps - a different kind of horror game has become vogue in the past few years. One where the player is given no weapons, no fighting ability and no recourse when it comes to resisting enemies other than running and hiding.

Amnesia, Outlast, Slender, SCP Containment Breach, One Late Night, Erie and plenty of others, are united in the idea that inability to fight is scarier than direct confrontation, that brute forcing the player to avoid enemies is a shortcut to making them fearful. But despite denying weapons to the player, these horror games make an implicit promise of safety.

Guns belong in horror games yes but what makes actual horror games unique is the dreadfully brilliant atmosphere like in Dead Space 1 or Resident Evil Remake.

Even today RE Remake has some of the best and jaw dropping atmosphere i have seen in a game. Its a masterpiece and we could use more of that.

But Umbrella corps seems to have no atmosphere at all, the game looks like a painfully average Third Person Shooter.

Like that terrible terrible Racoon City operative game (name eludes me, but the fact it was awful sadly does not).

Operation Raccoon City wasn't it? Awful game.

Please do not try to rationalize this crap. It looks like a Steam Greenlight game with effort put in (not a compliment). Actually reminds me of Alone in the Dark: Illumination or the F2P Ghost Recon game on PC.

This is a competitive shooter not a horror game it looks like it will be a blast. Two teams face off one life only with a sea of zombies in the middle.I can't wait.....

You're the reason why the franchise keeps being maimed to death.

As soon as I saw the title, I was on my way to mention Alien: Isolation, so I'm pleased the article included it as an example.

To me, Isolation found the perfect balance between arming you and making you vulnerable.
