Nintendo and the Wii U Underachiever

GE writes: "Why is the Nintendo Wii U a flop? I know straight away some Nintendo fans will jump to the defence, but rest assured I am 100% a Nintendo fan. I have loved Nintendo since I received a NES for Christmas when I was little. And I have owned all the Nintendo consoles they have released. It saddens me to see the demise from my beloved Nintendo. Let’s explore some reasons why it is failing and see if anything can change it’s fortunes."

Mm... this post gets on my nerves for two reasons - the obvious lack of proofreading (the pad it's self? Lastly one of the finally problems?) and that it reads like an article that could have been published about two years ago. If not for the little bit about "waiting for the NX" at the bottom, I would have sworn it would be.

The Wii U, a flop? No, I don't think so anymore. I think that with Smash, Mario Kart, Splatoon, Amiibo, and a ton of special offers, Nintendo has successfully pulled Wii U out of flopdom. At this point, the new purchaser has plenty of quality games to choose from. But underachiever? Undeniably yes. The Wii U *is* struggling; it's the Gamecube of this generation, and the Gamecube sold better.

Good point on the tablet - not that it's so terrible, but that tablet technology has grown so much in such a relatively short period of time that was was standard tech when Wii U was in development was already outdated when it came on the shelves. Consoles can't be 100% cutting edge, as any PC gamer knows - a good quality PC leaves the consoles in the dust not long after they come out, generally.

All good points.
Underachiever describes the Wii U just fine, but at over 10M sales, which isn't far behind the XBone, it's ridiculous to call it a flop unless someone just outright dislikes the system or doesn't have a firm grasp of how good its library has become at this point.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the Wii U was Nintendo's worst selling home console in history.

@ Butt

What's your point?
The sales don't speak for the quality of its library; too many people write it off because of sales, and you're one of them.

No matter how much you try to spin it, the Wii U is not a flop.
Get used to it.

Virtual Boy, being a home console and not a portable system, was Nintendo's worst selling console. And -that- was a flop. But even if you don't count that one, being the worst selling console of a company that has successfully been making consoles for the past 30 years doesn't necessarily make it a flop. A flop means that it's completely unsuccessful; a total failure. Wii U is doing a little worse than the GameCube, which held its own against the PS2 and XBox in its day. And as it's been on the market for three years and is far from dead, it's a success in its own right.

Wii U is a great system

So far Nintendo has sold far less hardware units in the 8th gen than they did in the 6th gen
