The Social Pressure to Play Every Game

Rich Simpson: "I’m witnessing friends put in eight hour sessions whenever they can. Work colleagues coming in slightly bleary eyed because they just had to finish that one bit with an S Rank. While this may be down to the sheer majesty of the game, when did we start to feel the need to binge game with each big new title? "

I don't understand it. I was never a day one gamer, unless it was a game I was really excited about. I'll play it when I'm in the mood, and finish it only if I'm enjoying it.

Ripsta7th3150d ago

I beleive you're talking about fallout 4
There is no way i aint getting that
Day 1

KyRo3150d ago

The one game that no one should buy on day one yet, everyone will buy it and act like its the best game ever even filled with a million bugs like the last two games and FO3 still got awarded GOTY. GOTY has been irrelivent to me ever since then tbh.

I'm trying to do both. Getting games at launch but taking my time instead of rushing to beat it. Currently playing through Mad Max and I'm playing a lot almost every night to try and beat it by Sunday (Forza 6) but I'm also taking my time. I'll attack patrols, build up my strongholds, do stunts in my car, take screenshots and bring the fear level to 0. I can easily beat the game without doing stuff like this but I'm just having too much fun. I've put in 25 hours since launch and I'm sure I won't be done for at least another 10 hours. Will probably do a 2nd play through next year during the summer drought.

Will pick up MGS 5 next month so I have plenty of time to play before Fallout 4 drops.

Ripsta7th3150d ago

The game i play most of the time is bf4, a ps4 launch game
2 years old

LightofDarkness3150d ago

I abandoned the idea of playing everything a few years ago when it became impossible. They overcrowd the holiday season so much that things just fall by the way side and you don't have time to play most of the games that release around then even in the new year, as you're still battling a backlog from years previous and new releases.

I've been attentive with my Day 1 games this year, more tha previous it seems. I bought Type 0, Bloodborne, MKX, GTA V (PC: patience is a virtue :P), Witcher 3, and MGS V so far. I will be buying Halo 5 and Dragon Quest Heroes next month, and only Fallout 4 and Battelfront in November.

If you look at this, it's maddening the amount of games I've missed because I seriously have no time for them : http://www.gameinformer.com...

I have to cut so many games I'd really like to play but can't devote the time to.

philm873150d ago

I only buy the games I'm sure I'll enjoy and will give me good value for money. I've had the PS4 since launch and enjoyed every game I've bought, but I tend to play one game at a time (plus Fifa!), complete it, then sell it for a decent price. I bought GTA V for £40, completed it, and managed to sell it for £35, so I'm pretty happy with the value I got for that £5!
I've had Fifa 14, Battlefield 4, Killzone SF, Infamous SS, MGS V GZ, Fifa 15, Pro Evo 15, GTA V, Battlefield Hardline, Last of Us, Dark Souls 2, Bloodborne, Dragon Age Inquisition, Witcher 3, Rocksmith 2014, Dying Light, CoD: AW, Shadow of Mordor, Destiny, AC Black Flag, Watch Dogs, MGS Phantom Pain.
Wow, after listing those I now know where the last few years have gone.

Mad Max is underrated. Such a fun game.

Cacabunga6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

RDR2 still looks astounding on PS4 Pro. i cannot imagine how it could look with a next gen upgrade.

JonTheGod6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

Probably not very different.

No idea why this article is highlighting recent beautiful graphically-advanced games and saying they need current gen makeovers. They already look better than most new releases; just compare Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad!

Yi-Long6d ago

It's obviously never gonna happen since Sony killed the game and studio, but Driveclub. Even in its current state, 10 years after release, it still puts many competitors to shame ...

Demetrius5d ago

I'm not into racing games but yeah I even looked at gameplay of that sometimes

Demetrius5d ago

Mad max ikr! Far cry primal, it amuses me how ubisoft just left ac unity hanging, sadly most of the good staff left from rocksteady while being forced to make that abomination smh

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan19d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

Cacabunga42d ago

Tomb Raider 1
Driver 1
Abe’s Odyssey
FF6
King of Fighters 94
Mortal Kombat OG
LINK 2 the past
Street Fighter 2
Resident Evil 1

Inverno42d ago

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name42d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno42d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno42d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure42d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
