Sony's Yoshida: Team Ico Has Something "Really, Really Good on the Way"

The new head of Sony Computer Entertainment Shuhei Yoshida said, in an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine, that Team Ico has something "really, really good on the way."

But 4 yrs of developments seems to long. Shadow was released late 2005 so the earliest they could have started was 2006 that means no team ico game till 2010. Plus team ico is pretty small i wonder how they are handling ps3 architecture

Nothing is better than the release of games, true but this is an industry like any other and hype or simple information has to be out there for enough people to know to be interested. Okami and both the team ico games could of done with some of the hype that accompanies games nowadays. They were all true gems but the masses knew nothing of them yet crappy games like (insert name here) can sell a sh*tload because of hype alone. Oh and stop hating, a large proportion of the articles on this site are about announcements and I prefer those to comparisons and vgchartz numbers for sure.;)

In my opinion that is very shortsighted of you ...

It's quite easy, as long as one knows that a 1st party (2nd party) developer is there, one knows that the system one owns gets GAMES, and in most cases not the ones that end up in the sub 70% barely mediocre to ok'ish games ratings but instead the 80ish mostly good - 90+ very good games.

If you fully depend on 3rd party devs you might end up getting none of the good ones as suddenly all 3rd party devs went to the one system you might not own. Therefor you would set up yourself for disappointment.

Take Nintendo as an example. The Wii has some good games .. but ALL of the good games are 1st party Nintendo games. The 3rd party stuff is crap for most parts, and a look at metacritic gives you an insight on how bad the 3rd party quality for Wii games actually is. You claim that 1st party studios are only stuff for "rabid fanboys", but i believe that 1st party studios are a core service a hardware manufacturer provides for its customers.

You can keep on ignoring all the dev studio stuff surrounding the console business, but then you will have to eat blindly whats served to you. I prefere some background regarding developers compared to total ignorance. Though as i accept your opinion regarding game devs and their allegations i think its unjustified to insult people who do show an interest beyond the mere surface as "rabid fanboys". It might come as a shock to you, but your opinion is not worth more than any other ones. And yes, there is a possibility for more than one opinion without everyone being a complete jackass about it.

ill add that when your spending 50 quid (uk) on a game a little research or knowing background information about the dev is more prudent than obsessive or 'fanboyish'. Would you buy a Zirkon mp3 player or a Myitsuba 4x4 without looking into their past?? Higher the cost the more research is usually done. If most consumers didnt think this way then sites like the ones that review games would be pointless.

well, DUH!

Sony wouldn't invest money in these guys over the past 12 years if they didn't expect them to, you know, MAKE SOME DAMN GAMES!

we ALL knew Team Ico was working on something, and we all expected that they'd show it off at TGS this year.

Sony has 19 first party studios, and 11 second party studios. all of them are working on projects, and a little less than HALF of them have actually announced what it is they are working on. and most of them are working on more than one title at a time (the larger studios; like Incognito is working on the various Warhawk expansions, but they also confirmed via Playstation blog, that they're working on a NEW game).

there are still a plethora of announcements of PS3 exclusives yet to come over the next few years.

another thing; tell me, if Sony were to release all of their first and second party exclusive lineup in the next 12 months, how many of you would be able to buy them all (assuming that all of them are as awesome as we hope they are)?

i'm assuming not many.

i like the pace of their first party releases, as it gives me time to indulge in the quality third party titles that come out.

my PS3 buy list ALONE this year is 30 titles. not factoring in the PSP and 360 titles that are on my buy list as well.

30 titles. most of them $60 a pop.

that's a lot of frigging money.

some of them will have to be held off until next year, but that'll just means my gaming purchases for NEXT year will be delayed also.

i'm not saying it's wrong to hope for Sony to release these games in the next 6 months to a year, i'm just saying that, economically, a lot of us will probably have to make some tough decisions when it comes to purchases.

and for the record, if there was one game i'd buy RIGHT NOW, over any game releasing at any point it time, it'd be whatever Team Ico is cooking up. i'd forsake Kratos, the return of Nathan Drake and Hale, even the return of my favorite Lombax just to play Team Ico's game.

Ico and Shadow of the Colossus were two of the most moving video games i have ever played until MGS4.

sure, back in the day, i didn't know the difference between a Hudson Soft and a Squaresoft, but as i got older, and started noticing that certain studios were known for quality, and others not, i became more aware of which studios are which.

i mean, now i know to be wary of games from Eidos, but be optimistic for games from Level 5.

it protects my wallet, in the end.

also, thanks to an issue of OPM a few months back, where they highlighted the many first and second party studios of Sony, i'm aware of how many they have, and what they're are working on (or speculated to be working on). it was a handy article. and i can say that from reading the list, there's some cool stuff on the way that we don't even KNOW about.

Well if your an adult that works in the gaming industry than that's a different story. But just because studios released great games before doesn't always means they'll release another great title. Lair and Haze are a perfect example. And as you know many employees leave companies leaving just the name and taking the talent.

Factor 5 has a very spotty track record. even their Rogue Squadron games (which i liked), weren't exactly the best games. i treat every one of their games with cautious optimism.

Free Radical, on the other hand, has made nothing BUT quality games. Haze was ONE mediocre game out of many, many quality titles. everybody has one sour lemon. Haze just happens to be Free Radicals. i'll be looking forward to their next game.

Silicon Knights; Eternal Darkness was AWESOME, and Twin Snakes was mighty fine. even though Too Human is looking to be rather mediocre, i'm not going to condemn them for all eternity. i'll be looking forward to their next game, and their next game in the Too Human or Eternal Darkness series.

Ubisoft Montreal. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Warrior Within, and Two Thrones were fantastic games. Assasin's Creed, not so much, but still enjoyable (even though the intel gathering got boring). the new Prince of Persia they are working on is looking fantastic, however. i'll always keep my eye out for their next game.

every developer out there has a project that could have been better, but unless they consistently make poor games (a la Uwe Boll films), i'll always give them the benefit of the doubt. just because a quality, solid developer (like Free Radical, Silicon Knights, etc) make a weak title once or twice, i'm not going to just dismiss them.

and for the record, i actually OWNED both Lair and Haze. i beat them both, and i have fun with the titles. no, they weren't perfect, but they certainly weren't the train wrecks that the gaming media painted them to be.

Lair had flawed controls, but the story, graphics, music were enjoyable. outside of one particularly frustrating mission, the rest of the game was fun. the main problem was that because you were on a dragon 100% of the time, it got repetitive in that, well, you were flying a dragon. i don't know what they expected the gameplay to be like when you're flying a dragon the whole time. did they want you be able to break dance or something? worth a rental. the motion controls take a bit to get used to, but by the time i was done with the title, i was a dragon flying master.

as for Haze, the controls were smooth as butter, the Nectar mechanic was fun though short-lived, and the voice acting was very over the top. the first half of the game also starts off slow, but the last half actually has some incredibly tense gunfights and scenarios. the story was different, but too spare, and i think it would have been better served as a third person shooter with a stronger narrative. worth a rental at the most. the fact that the game was delayed made the visuals seem pretty dated, but they were far from Activision or EA level graphics. the framerate was top notch.

no, they aren't the shining beacons of the Playstation 3's power that the media hyped them to be prior to release, but neither are they the shameful cesspools of crap that that very same media painted them out to be.

games like Resistance, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank Future, Warhawk, Uncharted, MGS4, Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, and many more released and upcoming titles do more than show what the PS3 can do, and, frankly, it's getting tiring hearing Lair and Haze being thrown in PS3 fan's faces everytime someone wants to make a disparaging remark about the console. it'd be sooo easy to throw Bomberman Act Zero, Vampire Rain, and quite a few 360 lemons right back at the 360 fanboys, but it's simply not necessary. the 360 has some quality games that speaks volumes about the console's true abilities, as does the PS3.

sure, talent leaves studios all the time.

for example, Jason Rubin, who founded Naughty Dog and designed many of their classic franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter, left the company YEARS ago.

the Jak and Daxter series and Uncharted have not suffered.

sometimes a very gifted designer/developer will leave the company, but the quality doesn't always suffer.

an example of a studio who has been more miss than hit lately is RARE. they used to be a FANTASTIC dev, but key people left before and after they were acquired by Microsoft, and suddenly they are releasing more mediocre games than great games.

HOWEVER, i'm still optimistic for Banjo and Kazooie, and whatever else they have on their plate.

it's a complicated business, but my rule of thumb for myself is; buy the games that pique my interest, regardless of reviews and other people's opinions. either the game will be good, or it will be ok, or it will be crap. never know unless you try, and i'm my own best critic when it comes to evaluating a game that has my attention. i can never be sure until i try it for myself. especially considering reviewers these days have such inconsistent reviewing standards (ie, one reviewer gave Dark Sector an 8.5, and Metal Gear Solid 4 an 8. personally, i would give Dark Sector a 6.5-7, and MGS4 a 9.5-10).
