Xbox Gets Grilled For Promoting Indie Games With AI Art

Xbox has received immense backlash from fans after its ID@Xbox program used an AI-generated image in a new post on X.

Vits116d ago

Meh. AI is going to substitute a lot of things in the future, just as mechanical automation did in the past and continues to do in the present. Also:

"My favorite indie game was paying actual artists instead of pushing horrific AI slop you fucking leeches".

This is such a bad take. The person who created the art was definitely a designer of some kind, likely working on a contract basis for an agency that was itself hired by Microsoft. So unless designers aren't artists now - which itself is a old "discussion" - then it was made by a artist that got payed.

EazyC115d ago

I don't know if you work, but I wonder if you'll have such a casual sentiment when an AI (or AI-powered robot) will displace your employment/income?

itsmebryan115d ago (Edited 115d ago )

@Easzyc

I don't get you folks that think if you bury your head in the sand things won't change. Technology always advances and you have to evolve.

How many jobs was lost by the internet that you are on right now complaining about jobs lost by Technology. Smh

ModsDoBetter115d ago

Heard it many times in the past.

Are you one of those people who refuse to use self checkouts to "keep people in a job"?

abstractel115d ago

I am an artist in the games industry and this affects me personally. Having said that, I don't really see the point in fighting the future. Yeah, it's sad that people are going to loose their jobs. Like others have mentioned, this is not a new thing though. Just look at the past century and you'll find that so many occupations have been replaced by innovation. I also realize that my work is a tiny, tiny part of all of these AI models since it's trained on artists' material and stock photography but it honestly doesn't bother me. I _do_ understand artists who are upset/depressed about AI, but it's highly unlikely that AI generated art will go away.

Juancho51115d ago

“The person who created the art wss definitely a designer of some kind”

You should like someone that needs more perspective, a 6 year old can type a prompt and create AI “art”. That’s the problem, AI is going to put a lot of people out of work who actually create art. People like you need more perspective, just because it doesnt affect you and your livlihood doesnt mean it’s not destroying people’s lives. Just how fast food automation is taking jobs it’s going to take your job too someday.

Vits114d ago

Nah. That is just how progress works under a capitalist system, buddy. It sucks? Yes, but it's how it has been working for literal centuries at this point like you probably learned in your school history class.

GhostScholar116d ago

All I know is that like 99 percent of indies I play are from game pass. I’m sure the devs are glad the games are being played more
Then being upset at using an ai graphic

We’ll be working with StudioMDHR to implement Xbox Live features into Cuphead on the Nintendo Switch

The Game Developers Conference is here again and I’m hecka stoked to join the ID@Xbox team in our annual trip to the San Francisco Bay Area. GDC is an amazing time to highlight new games, catch-up with other developers and friends in the industry and listen to their feedback to continue driving innovation forward for Xbox. 2018 was a fantastic year for developers in the ID@Xbox program and we can’t be more excited to share what we have planned for 2019 with our fans in the coming days and months.

Should be interesting to see where or how far Nintendo will go with Xbox services.

Neonridr1862d ago

yeah I am not entirely sure what "bringing Xbox Live features into Cuphead" means exactly, but will be very interested to learn more.

crazyCoconuts1862d ago

Maybe like what they do with Minecraft?

Neonridr1862d ago

could just be achievements and things like that..

gangsta_red1862d ago

I believe it will be achievements, multiplayer parties and crossplay

Nintendo, and even Sony, don't block access to third party services in games on their systems. They limit what kind of access those services have on the system itself, as well as what kind of data can be transferred through such services. XBL services such as achievments should be OK on Switch or PS for any game that might have them. However, a 3rd party dev can't use another 3rd party sign in service, and MS doesn't allow indirect connection to XBL through the publishers service, so it gets a bit mired.

I hope I said that right. It doesn't really sound right, even though it makes sense to me.

Technically, MS could release a game on Sony or Nintendo's platforms, and require an XBLG sub to access that games online content. Sony would still require it's sub for PS+. This is no different than MMO's like FF14 that have sub services.

In all this, MS has pretty much the exact same policies. It's just the happenstance of these console makers not releasing games on the other platforms that often, or ever, that really keeps it from happening. But companies like EA, Ubisoft, Square, etc, have all had their own account services on at least Sony and MS platforms, and while I'm not sure, it's possible it's on Switch, since MS has Minecraft on there like that.

"Growing out of these recent discussions, we are partnering with StudioMDHR to investigate bringing Xbox Live features beyond Xbox and PC to Nintendo Switch. Yes, this means that fans will now have the opportunity to experience StudioMDHR’s award-winning debut game on Nintendo Switch with Xbox Live!"

Very nice. Loving it. You're on track to do some special things...keep it up.

EddieNX 1862d ago

Cool, now put Banjo and Kazooie where they belong. I'm the Switch and in Smash brothers .

The HD versions of the Banjo games would be a great start.

Great news! I've been enjoying a ton of Indie and ID@Xbox games on my X and Surface Go recently. Play Anywhere is something really special and I hope many of these games have support for them. Wargroove, Guacamelee 2, X-Morph: Defense, Moonlighter...great games to play on the go.

I backed this game on Kickstarter at a First Rider level and it has been a great experience so far. Looking forward to the full game when it is released and glad to see it coming on PC as well.

bignosepig1870d ago

Lonely mountains seems pretty sick, if it comes out on nintendo switch I might buy it

Anomander1870d ago

It's not all that expensive of title. If you have a PC, pick it up on that and give it a try. Well worth it from what I have played already.

Petebloodyonion1870d ago

It's nice to see some of these titles going to Gamepass.
I think that it would be nice if all games develop via the ID@Xbox program got a day 1 release on Gamepass.
It would help get these games some exposure (something that they often lack) make them more accessible to the general public.
